So I started playing magic about 10 years ago, and chromium happened to be my favorite card. I was 10, he is a cool looking dragon. Enough said. I stopped playing for a while (as I was horrible) and picked the game up again around shards block. Once I heard about EDH, I immediately decided to make a deck. How could I pick anything else but the cute beasty that brought up so much nostalgia? Maybe I'd actually end up casting him!
So the nostalgia has worn off for me, but Chromium remains my steadfast general. For a multitude of reasons.
1) Style points. Seriously we're playing Elder dragon highlander, get your pitiful "legends" out of here. Real magic players roll with huge, nigh-uncastable dragons with completely irrelevant abilities. Real magic players, slam said general and then proceed to beat you to death with him as your little utility elves, human or other not as awesome magical creature watch as he flies over you in all his glory.
2) He actually fits my curve pretty darn well. Answered all my other boat load of stuff? Now I'm gonna slam down my dragon.
3) It makes me giddy inside to watch people facepalm as I play real WUB generals (Sharuum, sen triplets, etc) from my hand while Chromium looks on approvingly from the command zone.
4) A double-striking, duel sword wielding chromium is really fun to turn right. Especially when that chromium is being proxied by my Blue Eyes White Dragon I always carry with the deck. Where are your trap cards now?
5) Sometimes I have a hard time actually dealing the killing blow to people with this deck, unless chromium is on the field. He kills people fast.
I'm really happy with this deck, other than the fact it folds at the waist to fracturing gust. The only thing I'm currently looking for to improve it is a slaughter pact so I have a non-land to tutor up with tolaria west.
Have you considered Lure effects to activate the Rampage ability? Deathtouch + trample will make it so you roll through with even more damage per blocker (Vault of the Archangel would be nice for that).
Grappling Hook is an underrated equipment, which forces blocks while giving doublestrike. Useful for eliminating problems, and activating rampage.
I have actually. The main problem is that Chromium flies, so there often isn't that many things I'd be able to lure into him anyway. Also, he is usually equipped with a sword of some type making him even harder to block.
I hadn't really considered the vault of the archangel, that'd actually be pretty good in here.
