The California Poison Control System has received 60 reports of teenagers drinking hand sanitizer since 2010, showing the dangerous trend is not unique to Los Angeles.
Hand sanitizer, which has 62% ethyl alcohol, produces a potent drink that can cause alcohol poisoning. Some of the cases involve teenagers who used salt to separate out the alcohol.
I don't even understand highschoolers anymore. Back in my day, we would just get someone to buy some booze or MAYBE at worst find a sketchy corner store and buy some ourselves. I'm only 21, have things really changed so much?
A friend of mine works at a rehab center, and she tells me that they've recently had to start keeping all liquid hand sanitizers in the managers office just in case.
I saw that on the news tonight. I was kind of flabbergasted. I can't think of a dumber way to get alcohol, other than drinking rubbing alcohol. Very stupid. I spent a good portion of my teenage years in California. I don't think there's an easier state to get alcohol in as a minor.
Because conservative bias is a far, far worse thing. Liberal bias doesn't, statistically speaking, make people stupid. Conservative bias (or at least Fox's version of it) does.
Welcome to America, where innovation and drugs go hand and hand. We're fighting a drug war in which everything can be used as a drug. This again reflects the exact limitations for enforcement. My question that I come to is more of a reason "why do people do drugs" and going along the way to make drugs unattractive rather than being seen as sexy.
These go in cycles, whether it's crack or choking. The same with trends with STI's, you see a rise after Bill Clinton with your generation and oral sex with "rainbow parties" along with whole fun new classifications of STI's. Yet, not to be behind you kiddies your grandparents and parents have also seen a rise in STI rates in general.
Fun stuff.

This is why I agree with the 18+ drinking laws in Australia. People can start drinking legally at a younger age and its easier for 16 or 17 year olds to find someone to buy for them.
Those cases that were reported are probably just a small fraction of the number of people doing this.
I've also heard of people drinking mouthwash.
Not to try and ENCOURAGE the underage to go out and get drunk, but if you're absolutely going to do it no matter what, why not take the advice of the poster a few posts above me and just pay some jerkoff to buy you alcohol that is actually meant for drinking? At least then you aren't AS likely to kill yourself, although at a young age alcohol has much more profound effects on your body.
I think there was a thing about smoking peanut shells when I was in high school, but that was about it. Well, and sniffing the mimeographed test papers.
I missed the rest of this. And yes, I just dated myself.
Kids will always do stupid things to get high. Something new happens every 6 months. Bath salts was in the last rotation. Now it is hand sanitizer. Probably be snorting contact lens cleaner or something in the next rotation...
I have to say that this is one of the stupider ones. Those sanitizers are designed to make you throw up if ingested.
Shouldn't the headline of that article be "California Poison Control find the 60 dumbest teenagers in California"? Seriously, steal something from your parents liquor cabinet. It seems like something that kids who would huff paint thinner / solvents would do - which might I add, gets you on the dumbest teenager list as well.

Alcohol was available to me in my house by my Mom, I tried different kinds of wines and beers during my teenage years, realized most of them taste awful. Ouzo is good though. But knowing that I could have alcohol if I wanted it, made me not really care, there was no mystique to it and no reason for me to go out and get kronked. Heck, I still have only been drunk like 3 times in my life and I am 26.

Except those 'bath salts' weren't actually bath salts. They were designer drugs masquerading as bath salts. Typically polysubstituted methamphetamines/cocaine/MDMA, etc. Nasty, nasty stuff. Anyone that touches that is begging for cancer. (Or worse. No one really knows.)
Nah, I'll have my C2H6O without Triclosan thanks. Possible carcinogen, endocrine disruptor...nothx. Oh, and thats only ONE of the other chemicals used in hand sanitizer...
Stupid kids. A quick Google search would tell you that you're probably gonna die/suffer long term effects. (Or at the very least become violently ill.)
I think using Google effectively should be taught in schools. As Albert Einstein once said 'Why memorize anything I can look up?'
While I agree with increasing availability, I don't necessarily think lowering the drinking age to 18 is the correct answer. I and quite a few others I know were far to immature at 18 to be drinking. (Not saying that everyone is, we all mature differently.)
What about making it legal for parents to supply their children (16+, or maybe 18+) with alcohol? Parents are typically good judges of the maturity of their children.
Define "maturity." I know plenty of people 21+ who probably shouldn't be drinking alcohol. On the other hand, if you don't hurt others, why should others care about your drinking habits.
First vodka tampons, now this ****. How desperate can you get?
See, I don't think it's desperation, I think it's curiosity. If there is desperation involved it's probably more of the "OMG movies tell us that if we get these girls drunk they'll show us booooooobz!" variety.
So you are mature enough to vote, smoke, get married and join the army at 18 but drinking requires more maturity?
It depends on the person, that is why it is so hard to place age limits on things.
In a perfect world we'd have a fool-proof maturity test, that could tell people when they were mature enough for these things rather than a bunch of dip****s in suits.
Oh, and in regards to the service members : I think if you at 18, decide you want to put your life on the line, you deserve a damn beer.
it was up here in washington earlier, kids would take the bottle of hand sanitizer and get a bottle of mouthwash, and drink them in combination to get ****faced. Kids will be dumb, personally i have my vices, and i am legal to drink, i agree dropping the drinking age to 18 should be how it is, alongside the end of this drug war on harmless (or less harmless) substances.

Honestly, it's a really stupid concept. As a teenager myself, I would never even fathom why someone would do this. It's idiotic.
