I'm in the process of updating my cube for the AVR etc, and I have a question which I couldn't find discussion on lately.
Do people run falter effects in red? I understand you can always just "run more burn", but for my cube, I like to have a variety of effects to choose from (who knows, maybe they have ivory mask on the other side). I have night-bird clutches in there now - the flashback is "card advantage" in red.
I am considering Burn at the Stake since it's similar type of reach card, but the effect isn't quite a falter effect (tho I'm not entirely opposed to just switching altogether).
Frenzied Goblin and Goblin Shortcutter have been used in the past, but I don't know how good they really are. Falter effects are decent in theory, but I don't know if the effect has been attached to a card that's actually cubeworthy yet. Other cards that circumvent blocking assignments are good, and I'd look into effects like Hero of Oxid Ridge, Hellrider and even Burn at the Stake first. Or, there's always more burn.
Not a big fan, against control a card like Nightbird's Clutch could be useful and often in the aggro mirror it simply comes down to racing. If I were to play one it would likely be attached to a creature, something like Goblin Shortcutter maybe who at least provides a relevant body even when they have no targets. Burn at the Stake provides reach in a much better way IMO.
I never ran falter effects in my cube because in even in limited you only want to draw it when you are ready to kill the opponent or setup an attack that brings them within burn range. Otherwise, it's a dead card that doesn't help you get to that point. It's silly how much Feeling of Dread was better than Nightbird's Clutches when red could have used the effect.
I'll play it out some more and see how people play it.
Yeah, I think that a cubeable falter effect would be 'When ~ ETB, creatures without flying can't block this turn' attached to a 2/1 body for 3 CMC or a hasty body for CMC 4. Lesser falter effects actually still demolish combat pretty effectively, but don't feel like they're doing enough. I can't say that given the power of red four drops in recent history, a 2-power hasty creature with this ability at four mana is actually above the curve, although it would be format-defining in standard.
I should add that Ember Gale was not horrible sideboard card in that draft format. Tectonic Rift Maybe be a good choice for cubes that support red LD. I never played with Wrap in Flames, so I can't really comment there - likely there aren't enough x/1's in cube to get a lot of value out of it

I'm just going to put this right here... Fervent Cathar.
A killer in AVR draft and probably good enough for some larger/peasant cubes.
Ya, they're really good in limited. But they don't see much, if any, constructed/cube play because they're not impacting enough. I could go for less of them being printed myself.

Any thoughts?

You can try to run falter card for a while, but I think you'll eventually see that there are too many solid cards that you're running it instead of.

Give red more Threaten effects by all means. Even more Traitor's Roar effects would be pretty sweet. Falter effects are just too situational.
