Are You Comfortable?
After all, you'll be here a lot in the next two months. The Skylight Nebulae is the main discussion thread for The Magic Wars, a two-month Pro Tour qualifier. Here will be the main hub for both ongoing discussion, contribution of lore across teams, asking questions about the contest and current rounds, as well as for me to keep track of team and individual scores and link to the other threads. Basically, when there's discussion about The Magic Wars that doesn't seem to fit either the Round threads or the Team threads, here's the place to put it - and really, any discussion is welcome.
The Rules.
THE PRO TOUR
The Magic Wars is a two-month long event that fires off the Winter Pro Tour season. Because of this, it's a double qualifier - both first and second place will get an invite into the Winter Pro Tour!
SCORING
Each player will play with an individual score which determines cuttoffs during the second month and the final rankings for the end. Points for individual scores each round are made up of both a card score and a lore score, the latter out of 20, which is calculated from rankings by players.
Individual scores are reset at the beginning of July (Round 5). During the second month, a teamwork bonus is also applicable to the individual scores - read below.
PRO POINTS
The highest scoring players of each team get a Pro Tour Invite. finalist teams get a Pro Tour Invite. All finalists get Pro Points, as outlined below:
1st: 16 2nd: 10 3rd - 4th: 8 5th - 10th: 4
Please note that second place does not necessarily mean you get an invite, if first is on your team.
ROUND MAKEUP
There will be 8 Rounds for the two months. Each Round take place over 7/8 days, with 4 days for entries and 4 days for critiques. Each Round will involve the main card challenge, giving you three card creation challenges from which you pick two.
In addition, there will be a personal lore challenge. These are short writing assignments based on your race, in response to some task or question, such as "Write about the worst day in your race's history." These creative pieces are to be submitted with your cards.
Critiquing will be done sort-of like a CCL; you'll be assigned a team to critique and then ranking the players of that team. So instead of a Top 3, it's more like a Top 5/6. This is slightly more work but in exchange, giving reviews/critiques is absolutely optional. Your average rank will then be calculated, multipled by 10 and then added to your score; for example, let's say that there are 6 people in a team and you were ranked 1st, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 4th and 6th. Then your average rank is calculated in terms of points (with 1st = 6, etc.) and multipled by 10 to give you a final +38 to your score.
In addition to this, you will also need to rank the team's lore pieces, submitted with the cards. A similar grading system will be used, except final points are downsized to a maximum of 20.
THE FIRST LEG
Rounds 1 - 4 happen in June. At the end of the month, the two highest scoring players of each team make it to the next month.
THE SECOND LEG
Rounds 5 - 8 happen in July. The ten finalists form two teams (of their own choice). Critique assignments this time will be easy: during Rounds 5 - 7, you will be critiquing the opposing team.
During Rounds 5 - 7, a similar system to June will be used, except with the addition of the teamwork bonus. The amount of helpful teamwork apparent in your team threads will be evaluated by the organisers (myself, NotoriousLynx, perhaps Megiddo and Diefi00) and give you a bonus out of 10 to be added to your team's individual scores. This will give you the edge over the other team.
At the end of Round 7, the final rankings are largely decided. However, in Round 8, the highest scoring players of each team are taken for the final match in Round 8. While both of these players receive an Invite nonetheless, they will duke it out for 1st place, more Pro Points and the mantle of having won The Magic Wars! The winner is then decided with a poll.
The only way to achieve the sort of results we got last time is to bootstrap together an emotionally-null psychopath, a chubby chaser, a schizophrenic, and a small child.
The way I did it last was that once everyone submitted their races, we named the plane and shaped the plane based on locations people brought up in their race's description. I think the Altraitors lived in some floating palace in the desert while Reste and Lanmilla lived in a giant mountain fortress.

My studies in this matter suggest he is correct. But where would we get a set of five-and-a-half such individuals. (Honestly, I forget who was that sixth man.)
So no archenemy challenges this go around? I really liked that though...
EDIT: I could be the cartographer, if nobody minds it being crudely done in MS paint.
EDIT2: I just noticed how damn much we posted in the Legion thread. 11 pages in my humongous page size format. Also consider that what's in that thread was only about half our discussions.

No archenemy challenges. We wanted to reduce complexity on what is a very complex competition.
Cartography is iffy on a large scale, because we want to keep things open, not just for the beginning races but what happens later. Thanreus's geography will largely be fluid to meet the story's needs.
However, if you want to do some smaller cartographies, like within your own team, that's perfectly fine and also extremely, extremely awesome. =D
Quote from LnGrrrR »
When you say "new" race... what if that race is only mentioned on one card? I was thinking about a race of ampihibious creatures (U/G obviously) that would get bonuses based off various factors. However, in the 2012 set, they released a card called Amphin Cutthroat which shows an amphibious type of dude (though he's listed as a "Salamander rogue" for creature).
What say you Lanxal?
This is a PM I got.
New races is pretty broad. It can be pretty similar to what existing races, like my Altraitors in the previous TMW being based on the viashino, as long as there are distinctions and you make it clear that it is a different race (e.g. I did not call Altraitors viashino).
And also, don't worry about other people's races being too similar to your own. Besides the fact that we'll no doubt separate the races that are too similar into different teams, The Magic Wars is huge enough that similar-ish races will be able to be in the story without trouble. As long as they aren't exactly the same, it's perfectly fine for two people to, say, make races of lizard people.

ANNOUNCEMENT
Slight change of plans: Sign Ups will close on the 28th, roughly 3 days before the start of the competition. We're anticipating that we'll get the desired roster of 24 players by then, so this should be perfectly fine. On the 28th (6PM EST), the Teams will be assigned, so that players can mess about a bit before the main challenge begins! For this 3-day period, a Round 0 Lore Challenge will also be issued. =D
Remember that you can still edit your races after sign-ups are closed. It's just that new races will not be accepted, and also any placeholders remaining will be rejected.
If this deadline changes, such as if we fill out 24 people early, you'll all get at least 3 days notice (so we won't abruptly close off sign-ups tomorrow or anything.)
Also, suggestion: probably best to put a link in your signature to your race post in the sign-ups thread. It will make things vastly easier in the days to come.
OK guys, I currently have an Excel sheet up with all of the info about people's races.
So far there are 12 White races, 12 Blue, 8 Black, 11 Red, and 13 Green. These are grouped into 12 tri-colored, 8 bi-colored, 0 mono-colored, 6 non-colored (for the undecided folks), and 1 quad-colored [Flabort is having a hard time making up his mind].
So, if you're looking to be more unique with your entry, going black is a good idea, mono-colored a better idea, and no-colored an almost insane idea (insanely awesome, that is).

Monocolored might be slightly too limiting for a contest format

I'll decide, at least before the 28th! I swear!
seriously, take a look at the flavor and tell me which would be better - they worship water, but are definitely a religious society!
...perhaps I could drop black and be GWU...
But then I'd have to drop Graveyard Matters, and other mechanics I wanted. Oh, what a tough choice.

You can still do graveyard matters. White and Blue can bring back certain things from the graveyard (small things for white, spells/artifacts for blue) and green is the secondary graveyard color anyway. It should just probably not be something super heavy.

Thank you. I'm so used to black being the sole ruler over the graveyard. And since I didn't actually intend to put anything from the graveyard back (just count, or exile from, or similar)...
No more entries starting 24th of May, 6PM EST! This is one day's warning!
Holders are still fine. Placeholders that have already made posts before the deadline are okay. Holders and incomplete races posted afterthis post (so between the 23rd and 24th) will be rejected.
People with holders that make it in and even those who have 'finished' their races will have 4 days to work on their races to a suitably complete stage (remember, you'll still be allowed to edit it after the competition starts). Teams will be assigned on the 28th (6PM EST), as planned. Any holders at that stage will be rejected.
I'm extremely sorry about having to go back on the 3-day deadline. Having small, tight teams - which at seven each is really pushing it - is just so important to The Magic Wars and its success, there was no other choice. I was juggling with this possibility since way before the sign-ups even opened, but I tried to fool myself into thinking that maybe we'd only get 24 naturally. That thinking continued all the way up to yesterday, when I tried to rationalize that having a 3-day warning wouldn't be much of a big deal. But it is, so it's no longer possible.
This could have been done better on my part and I apologise.
I am going to hurt you extremely badly tomorrow at school.
Edit: 24/5/2012 Announcement.
ANNOUNCEMENT
Ok, new, far better plan that will solve many problems: We're going to have five teams. Three of them will be cut come July. That means that we can have up to 30 people, and teams will be nice, tight pods of 6.
Nothing else has to change now. Sign-Ups are closed, and any holders will have until the 28th to finish their races (remembering that small edits are still good going into the competition). It's going to be brilliant, I assure you all.
Hey what kind of edits can be made, i need a 3rd colour to make things easier. I need a neutral or arbiter colour to deal with the extremes of black and white.
Right now it feels like something's missing...
Major changes like new colours and stuff can happen before the 28th. Minor changes, anything like changing the appearance and adding information, can occur over the course of the competition. But try to make it consistent, like don't enter a warrior card Round 1 and then later edit your race to be pacifist.

"Wait, can you actually win a thread?" - Atrius.
Thank you. I'm so used to black being the sole ruler over the graveyard. And since I didn't actually intend to put anything from the graveyard back (just count, or exile from, or similar)...
That solves my problem perfectly.
Ashamed of posts from years ago.
Massive hipster points, though.
So we have roughly 27 races, including placeholders, already signed up.
I wanted 24 for 4 tight teams of six.
Also there are 5 days left.
So... Awkward. =D
I may want to close it soon but we'll see. 3 days warning, remember.

Whilst winning is the obvious goal here, I'm more in this for fun!

Club Flamingo Wins: 1!
No more entries starting 24th of May, 6PM EST! This is one day's warning!
Holders are still fine. Placeholders that have already made posts before the deadline are okay. Holders and incomplete races posted after this post (so between the 23rd and 24th) will be rejected.

Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)
Major changes like new colours and stuff can happen before the 28th. Minor changes, anything like changing the appearance and adding information, can occur over the course of the competition. But try to make it consistent, like don't enter a warrior card Round 1 and then later edit your race to be pacifist.
When a Small Child calls me Lanxy baby, I feel like I should be arrested.
Luckily I'm 16 so it's less creepy (is it?).
Anyway, 28th. Three days and 74 minutes from this post.
