This little guy has done nothing but impress me so far. He is the only other soulbound creature like Mauler that gets value even if your opponent has removal for either creature. The +1/+0 is permanent and turns Stonewright into a late game Blaze in addition to making larger creatures feel a bit aqward trading down in the early game. I'd go so far as to rate him a bit higher than either Reckless Waif or Stormskirk Noble. This might be a bit premature but he has already won me a few games by letting a smaller creature my opponent was ignoring swing for lethal out nowhere.
This guy is a beating in AVR. He doesn't need to attack to be dealing extra damage a turn and for a final blow you can attack with him and his bond. When you hold him back he can also trade up very effectively.
He has two problems that Stormskirk Noble does not have, you have to invest more mana to gain value and you have to play enough creatures.
Yeah, it might be a little ambitious to say this guy is better than the noble, but stonewright is a much, much better topdeck, in fact figure of destiny is the only red one drop i can think of that can be a sweet topdeck late in the game. I won a peasant game last night where i ripped this guy and just pumped my dude for like 9 damage.
Edit: I guess lavamancer is fine, and spikeshot elder late.
I'm a big fan. He has been consistently solid in my peasant cube and seems to always net value at every stage of the game. He is really powerful when paired with evasive creatures and is the best one drop in the cube aside from Mom to topdeck mid to late game. Versatile is usually not what you get from a red 1 drop, but this guy is IT.

I don't think it has either problem. You have to represent mana when attacking, but as long as they don't want to trade a their 3/3 for your 1/1, you don't actually have to pay the mana. Also, while you do have to play quite a few creatures for it to be effective, I think the same is true for the noble. 1 drop aggro creatures are only good in aggro decks.
He's a good topdeck, but my suspicion is that it's certainly not something you want to drop on curve (i.e. on turns 1-3), when you should be casting better permanents/spells rather than durdling away on firebreathing.

You don't actually spend mana on it before turn 4 95+% of the time even if you play it turn 1. It's kinda like Darkthicket Wolf was in draft or Basking Rootwalla is in cube - you threaten the pump but don't normally have to use it (until you have nothing better to do with your mana)
Amazing card, and very solid for a red one-drop. I have been very pleased to pair him up in a variety of color combinations. A recent red-black deck of mine saw Stonewright pumping a first-striking Nekretaal. Not bad. In red-white, white's first-strikers and double-stikers get even better. Red-blue adds evasion to the mix.
I guess what he meant is that you can't land a blowout midcombat - just pump in response and you're fine. Same with Mauler: Once your guy is attacking, it is.
Specialities about the cube: U tempo, B aggro, R slow-ish are supported. G aggro is not.
Currently trying to support tokens in all colors but blue, in different ways: W pumps them, B sacrifices them, R suicides them, G has decent-sized ones.

This only applies to sorcery speed removal. Instant speed removal can still kill one of the creatures before you get the bonus from the soulbond ability.
You have to kill either the Stonewright or the creature it is trying to soulbound IN RESPONSE otherwise it can either can simply be pumped into oblivion in response to the removal spell. It is still quite solid. Besides which creature would you kill? If you don't kill stonewright you can simple drop another creature and beat face with Stony next turn. Overall I think its not a choice of Noble vs. Stonewright. You need both to maintain a high density of 1 drops in red.

If the Stonewright player has more than one creature in play prior to casting Stonewright, you can only stop the firebreathing by killing the Stonewright. The choice of whom to pair with occurs during resolution of the Soulbond trigger, so if you kill the most viable choice, Stonewright's controller can just choose a different creature to pair with. Once the choice has been made, the effect has already resolved and Stonewright and/or its "soulmate" can pump.

Really?!?!?! I was under the impression you had to choose the target before resolution. What your saying makes every soulbound creature much much better.

I should clarify that this is only true of the Soulbond abilities of creatures entering the battlefield. If Stonewright were already on the battlefield, he could only legally pair with the creature entering the battlefield, so killing either creature in response would still work.
But yes, since it's untargeted, there's no way for you to wait until after the pair is named. This is the same way most Clone effects work, too.

Wow, that makes Stonewright even better than I though, I just checked the text and I have been reading it wrong. That makes Stonewright even better as a late game spell. If my opponent is ready to cast an instant speed removal spell on Stonewright as it comes into play this lets me still swing with ever creature.. and this only cost me a R :).
Stonewright: I initially missed Stonewright in my evaluation and mainly thought about it because Evan Erwin included the card in his recent cube update. Soulbond creatures are essentially equipment strapped onto bodies, much like Living Weapon, and Firebreathing has never been this cheap. It's a card I'm experimenting with in my regular cube but it's been solid as a way to just pump offensive creatures, especially evasive ones. A 1/1 for R can be awkward if it has nothing to pair with, but it works very well with small guys that want to just jam damage as much as possible.
My opinion on it has risen moreso since then; very solid aggro beater and one of the better ones as a topdeck (assuming you can pair it with something) and very good as an early beater. The "threat of activation" on it is definitely something to consider and can make blocking very hard to block.
What do you guys think about Stonewright vs Reckless Waif? I'm still running the Werewolf, but am considering swapping her out. The Waif only seems better on turn 1.

Stonewright is much better as it doesn't have to drop turn 1 to be really good. Overall Stonewright is more consistent.
In hindsight, Stonewright's firebreathing ability was much stronger than I initially gave it credit for. Before this guy, the closest we ever came to mass firebreathing was Captive Flame, and that sucked big time.

For some reason I read that as fist-pumping. I like that better than firebreathing.
