Lately I've been working a lot on developing specific subthemes within my cube. Discussions on here about both Reanimator and the Tinker archetype have been incredibly helpful, so I figured I'd try to provoke some discussion about tokens.
People talk a lot about how there is a token subtheme available within the cube, and white and green usually get the brunt of it. I went through my cube list and tried to figure out where that would come from, and really didn't find all that much. Sure, I run a ton of anthems, and I love having them all available to boost my little dudes, but I actually don't have that many spells that create tokens, especially at lower CMCs. Cards like Cloudgoat Ranger, Elspeth Tirel, and Deranged Hermit seem to be the allstars when it comes to making lots of tokens, but I was wondering what people's experiences were when pushing the theme.
So here's a random assortment of questions
- What kind of balance between Tokens creators and cards that care about tokens do you have?
- Other than Anthems, how exactly are you taken advantage of creating lots of little dudes?
- Do cards like Midnight Haunting make the cut? Is just making a few tokens at a relatively decent rate worth it?
That seems like enough to get things started . . .
Two cards that are low in CMC and can be complete power houses are Lingering Souls and Bitterblossom. More importantly both cards can, and will, see play in other strategies so they aren't narrow by any means. Call of the Heard is pretty good too, but it's not exactly a "token" card.
Aside from anthems the cards that care about tokens are equipment as various decks will try to just kill the creature that's being equipped or is already equipped and as such having plenty of bodies is a benefit. Something like Grafted Wargear or Skullclamp are you all stars as Skullclamp allows you to draw cards at an insane rate with tokens while Wargear is a free to equip item that makes every token a sizable threat.
More so, you have cards that care about the number of creatures, such as Hellrider, or cards that want you to sacrifice creatures, such as Recurring Nightmare in combination with the Hermit specifically.

I think that we should have a sticky that tracks archetype discussions similar to what we have for the single card discussions.
