I don't understand why they keep printing bad cards like these. Why no Animate Dead? With Tormod's Crypt around it wouldn't be broken. Guess R&D doesn't want to take risks with the core set, although a Sheoldred on turn two after an end of turn Thought Scour is probably too good even with crypt around.

Sure, if you see it in your opening hand, and if you're not maindecking it you scoop game one. As it is, everyone has to have graveyard hate just in case of the oppressive Reanimator/Dredge matchups in Legacy. Standard needs none of that. Rites is annoying enough.
Goes right in my silly Jace's Phantasm / Chancellor of the Spires brew. Gets their big critters if I mill them, or big spells (via the Chancellor) if I mill those.
Yay, I have missed this in my teaching decks.
As showing one of blacks best abilities,
its good to finally have that back in standard on a mono black card.
The flexibility of digging into your opponents grave is crucial.
and man does that zombie type mean a bunch for specific builds,
not too much in the current standard "zombie" deck though.
So happy, this is one of my favorite designs ever.

Edit: Actually it's from any graveyard... so perhaps could see extremely limited sideboard play? Probably not. Not completely unplayable though.
no it's playable. i will use both unburial rites and this main board. but i might just use it main board in my U/B control deck as a one or even a 2 of.
However MaRo has admitted multiple times that they find Reanimation to be extremely tricky because it has effect on the powerlevel of creatures make.
The result is that they make weirder Reanimation spells which can actually be good if we break it, but it's more work than other strategies (counterburn etc) as they make the tools more clunky.
That's why we now have Rites. It's overcosted, but because of Mulch and the like, we can cheat the cost (flashback is cheaper) and even work well with getting fatties in the yard and lands in hand.
This is the same. Overcosted, however there is a chance an effective mill strategy might arise and could use something like this. Chances are low, but with so many pushes to the mill strategy of late (# cards), this might be what WotC intends.
Reanimation is more half-ramp nowadays, it's not like in the glory T2 days of Inv/Odd block where you could 2nd turn Life/Death. But then again the creature quality then was lower then, so T2 fatty right now would probably be too good.
I just wish they wouldn't print so many (good) anti-GY cards.
Because Standard's trash is Limited's gold. Because not every player has access to every card. Because not every card can be good. And every other reason mentioned here.

Excellent article and I agree. For what it's worth, I think we, as Magic players, especially the more advanced players, expect too much from this game.

The specific question "Why do they keep printing bad cards" has been answered a zillion times by Wizards, but the short answer is:
a) Animate Dead is dumbly powerful with practically any Mythic Rare creature, of which there are always a solid dozen or so+ playable ones in Standard,
b) cards you think are 'bad' might not be designed for you, or in this case, the mechanic is difficult to cost appropriately and still look as good as it actually is- reanimation effects should never cost less than 4 mana, EVER, and 5 is right for the Core Set Uncommon
c) Limited is a thing. People play it. What's right for Constructed Expansion Block Rares isn't going to be nearly the same thing as Limited Core Set Uncommons. Wizards has a LOT to keep track of when they make sets that come in Booster Packs. -Premium Decks, Planechase, Archenemy, Commander, and Duel Decks are above the curve for what they should reprint for Standard. Not very far above it, but definitely above it.
I am probably every color-combination it is possible to be, though it's really hard to figure out what it would mean to be 4-colored....it doesn't seem logical to be 4-colored without being 5-colored.
Neat limited card though.

Turn 2 Animate Dead.
GG.
That doesn't sound like a Standard I'd want any part of.

i like the card. it's a good card.
Exactly. If you think Animate Dead would be "fair" with a discard outlet as cheap as Faithless Looting in Standard you need to giev your head a shake.

2nd. It's a fun reanimate spell. Let your Frites opponent dump a creature in the yard and YOU can reanimate it with Rise from the Grave!

So, to win in that meta you would have to have blue?
