If mana leak is the standard control counterspell in Modern, shouldn't Mana Tithe be a beast in modern early game?
In a couple of situations, especially against aggro, I think that mana tithe is a better play rather than Path to Exile.
The blue decks of legacy play Forces and Dazes not just because they are free spells, but most of the time even the dazes are hard counters.
Obviously this argument justifying mana tithe is not completely solid, as most legacy decks run off of 2-3 land in play for most of their games, and the early game is alot more intense.
But bant decks almost always are tapping out turns 1 2 and three for hierarchs, geists, goyfs and KotR's.
Jund decks are tapping out for thoughtseize, Confidants and BBE's
etc etc etc.
In anything UW I think that this card can at least be SB material, no?
Any thoughts, input, ideas?
I want to run 4, because theoretically it seems quite legit.
It could be good, but I don't think UW control is the right place. A UW based tempo deck seems better. The longer the game goes, the worse mana tithe becomes. A control deck probably wants a harder counter to avoid dead draws in the late game. For the tempo deck, maybe a core like this would work:
It could easily splash green for some beats or red for burn. It's not too far off from the isochron scepter deck, actually. Maybe that's the right home for it.

Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.
Well if it helps... my famous joke of a story of mine is that a buddy of mine used it as a joke in a big modern touri, in boros. But the sheer shock of him using it so much out of know where, ruined peoples plans, and he managed to win it all (along with a really nice cash prize...)
Now we joke "MANA TITHE" every time we do something the other doesnt like... but he openly admits that was a one time deal.
I tried running it in D&T but it did not work out. I prefer playing stuff in the first turns rather than wait to see what my opponent does.
Still, I love it when an opponent plays his game-winning spell and you counter it out of nowhere
If I were to do this, I would run 4 and then side it out every game 2 where you get the benefit of them playing around it, but you have replaced it with whatever you needed to side in vs that matchup.

Clever. I used to do something similar with isochron scepter. You beat them with it game one then side it out while they side in all their hate -_- .
I really like this card. Have won games with it. It completely surprises people and is a house against combo decks like Hive Mind and Splinter Twin or decks that want to drop a Titan ASAP.
I have been tooling around with using it in my own d&t variant, since Vial lets you keep mana open pretty easily. It can be pretty strong with Thalia on board, but also a little awkward since Thalia makes it cost 1W.
The plan mentioned above of siding it out g2 to play head games with your opponent can be quite fun.
THIS 100X!!! If you don't agree with this then there is no amount of logic that will ever convince you that good, non-oppressive, combos should be allowed. If you don't agree with it then just don't play this game, and you certainly shouldn't feel entitled to make any comment on ban lists ever.

I was just thinking this might be good in Thalia decks since she's already tying up extra mana. I know you have to pay 2, but it's going to hit more, esp if it comes in from the board.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

This. It reminds me of a similar strategy I had in a Modern event during the PTQ season. I ran RWU Delver and used Isochron Scepter main deck. If my opponent ever saw it, I would side it before the next game. My opponent always sided in artifact hate for it, and that left them with dead cards in hand. A little different, but same pretense as it forces your opponent to play around it, even if it was no longer in your deck.
The best place for it is in W/non-U aggro. Because against blue, people expect counterspells and play around them, i.e vs Delver. In White-based aggro, you can Mana Tithe someone's sweeper out of nowhere, or their Karn or Wurmcoil, or their Vedalken Shackes (rarely).
Oh, I thought he was talking about playing a spell that is countering a spell with counters on it as it comes into play, but I see you guys were just discussing whether he was flashing a creature with flash in order to flash a flashback or just flashing a creature with flash but not needing flash in order to flashback a spell without flash.
It has some definite uses but whenever I add it to a deck I end up cutting it when I get to the "what is best for this slot" point in the building process and it ends up on the cutting room floor. There are just so many other cards that are slightly better at what it does, in addition to so many good one-drops in general.
Any time you can disrupt your opponents game plan with 1 mana, I think it's worth considering. That is why Spell Pierce is solid in this meta. The cool part about Tithe is that you don't need to leave blue open, which can throw off your opponent and catch them with their pants down.
I would say play it as a 3-4 of main deck if you are going to run it. Side it out if your opponents see it. It's a 1 trick pony that will catch your opponent off guard the first time they see it. Afterwards you can board it out and your opponent will still be forced to play around it.

Who knows, though. I still think it could be pretty sweet.

I say go for it!
However, Fish is still trying to copy Aether Vial from Legacy, which hasn't had any real results.
I doubt the lack of success for Merfolk in Modern has to do with 4 artifact slots.
That being said Mana Tithe is definitely worth trying, especially in non-blue decks; they'll never see it coming!
