Challenge in June: "Create a new artwork for a Magic card that has not been altered at all so far or only seen artwork extensions"
In June, we had six artists who stepped up and faced the challenge. Congratulations to all participants - you were the first to give a new face to card that has not seen any new art alterations so far. I think this is pretty cool
kiljo's Manamorphose - Great job matching theme and title. I wish this piece had been done as a full bleed - it would have easily eliminated the 'bumps' left over from the card type bar and I feel the black and white image would pop more.
Sense_90's Parallel Lives - Again a good match for theme and title. Again we have the 'bumps' left in the composition albeit just one. I like the color palette and the location of the light source. I feel this would also pop more if centered and given the full bleed treatment - the border just pulls my eye back and there is no reason to leave the original artist's credit in this or the preceding entry. Still I really enjoyed this - really nice linework.
BlackBull's Mana Reflection - It was tough 'cause I liked them all, but I decided to just vote once and this was it. Although I found the image a little hard to grok, I enjoyed the textural elements so much and the whole thing was just such an original. I may be unconsciously influenced by the artist's previous work in this regard which showcase similar elements. The reflecting motif in the artist's sig is a nice touch too.
melissamyth's Exotic Orchard - This is the one alter I would most likely see myself including in one of my decks. In fact, after considering it more I went back to add a vote for this piece as well, not realizing that although multiple votes are allowed you only get one opportunity - so +1 for you melissamyth! It's a bit rough at the top but otherwise nicely done.
Aeontropy's Future Sight - I dig it. I really wish that the composition used the negative space ( ie. black areas in the background ) to frame the floating text/mana costs in the interest of legibility - often a problem when working on old card frames. Still, the eye motif is a really good fit here.
Good job to everyone who completed an entry - let's keep doing it and keep the contests going!
Wow, I'm impressed -- everyone uses such different art styles, and they all look awesome!!
I voted for Aeontropy's Future Sight. I really like the eye symbols, and the level of detail is incredible, especially at such a small size. Full bleed looks great, plus the contrast of orange and blue is nice.
Sense's Parallel Lives is sick, it reminds me of the koi in my parents pond. I feel that everyone did a good job, hopefully this can keep going cause it is nice to see what people come up with.
I think the best executed is BlackBull's Mana Reflection and I really like the style of the Future Sight Aeontropy has done but I voted for the Exotic Orchard by melissamyth because I really like that foggy looking environment and I am kind of a naturalist^^.
All the entries are great, but I voted for Sense90 and BlackBull. Sense90's is the most eye catching to me and I love the concept for the card. BlackBull is very clean and detailed, I love the style.
My primary votes goes to BlackBull. It is not really clear what is going on in the pic, but I think this is part of the idea. Concept-wise and concerning technique, this is the best piece in the contest.
I also voted for Aeontropy. The idea is pretty cool and the work is very detailed, flavourwise this artwork goes along well with the card name.
Lastly, I voted for Kiljo. His work is sub par from a technical perspective, but I think he deserves credit for stepping out of the comfort zone and giving it a go. I like this spirit.
The orchard was my second option. I'm not sure the art gives an "orchard" feeling, but it is pretty exotic and pretty pretty. Loved the way the mist was pictured.
Mana Reflection is by far my favorite, and not only because the art was very dreamy, abstract and well painted, but the solution for the artist signature was very interesting. It could go without the flowers, though, and I think the card wouldn't miss a thing.
