The Mafia League is a series of six mafia games for League players. To join the League you must commit to playing three of the six offered games. You can play more (and there are incentives for playing more), but three is the minimum. If you play more than the required amount, the new score (if better) will replace your lowest scoring game.
League signups will be rolling. People will be accepted to the League as long as the first four games of the League are going, but it will be closed during the fifth and sixth League games. Players must commit to playing three out of the six offered games in order to stay in the League. People who sign up but cannot play in three out of six League games will be dropped.
During the game a group of judges will be paying attention to your play. After the game is over, scores based on the included rubric will be given out. Only the maximum score is listed. Scores will be determined on a per player basis. It is entirely possible for a person with an awesome Day 1 who gets nightkilled that Night could get a higher score than a player with poor performance who lives to the end of the game. We realize that since roles are randomized and play is subjective, there is no concrete and objective way to outright judge performance. So, in the spirit of this, we will only be tabulating your three highest scores to determine your ending League score. This is the reward for playing more games.
In addition, when you sign up for the League, you will receive two Review Points. At the end of a League Game, you have the option of using a Review Point and get an in-depth review. If you do not wish to use your Review Point or have ran out, you don't get a review. There is a deadline of two weeks to indicate that you would like to get a review. Any player who uses the point before the deadline will get a review.
League games will follow the commonly accepted rules of Mafia. If you show unsportsmanlike conduct, replace out in two League games, or are modkilled in two League games for rules violations, the judges have the right to disqualify you from future League games. This is a friendly competition for bragging rights and a trophy next to your screenname (once Curse implements this again); this is not an ugly bar-room brawl for the brass ring. Please play as such.
Not interested in League play? There are other opportunities to participate. We are currently looking for hosts, setups, and judges.
If you are just looking for a good game with good players, non-League participants will be allowed in League games! If you find after a League game that you wish to join the League, judges are willing to retroactively judge your performance in the previous League games you participated in if you spend a review point.
If you're interested in submitting a League setup for review, PM any of the listed judges or the bookkeeper. Make sure you get a response to acknowledge it was received.
Replacements into a League game get a small bonus to their score to catch them up to other players and a little extra as a token of appreciation.
If you are interested in playing in the League, please post here. If you have reservations, questions, comments, or concerns please post those here as well.

During the game a group of six judges will be paying attention to your play. After the game is over, scores based on the included rubric will be given out. Only the maximum score is listed. You will also receive an "outsider review" summarizing why you got that score and details on how you can improve in future games.
Scores will be determined on a per player basis. It is entirely possible for a person with an awesome Day One who gets Night Killed that Night could get a higher score than a player with poor performance who lives to the end of the game. We realize that since roles are randomized and play is subjective, there is no concrete and objective way to outright judge performance. So, in the spirit of this we will only be tabulating your three highest scores to determine your ending league score. This is the reward for playing more games.

This is a friendly competition for bragging rights and a trophy next to your screenname; this is not an ugly bar-room brawl for the brass ring. Please play as such.
The Pre-season of the League is meant to hammer out any problems that only crop up while playing. Think of it as the 'beta testing' phase. So while your score will have relevance in the future, it will not be guaranteed to be 100% bug free.
Not interested in League play? There are other opportunities to participate. We are currently looking for hosts, setups, and replacements.
If you are just looking for a good game with good players, non-league participants will be allowed in league games! If you find after two league games that you wish to join the league, judges are willing to retroactively judge your performance in previous league games you participated in.
If you want to run a League game as a Host, our "Mod-Judge" will Co-host the game with you. The Co-host will be as hands on as you desire; she/he can fully run the setup for you or just be a back-up in the case you can't run it anymore. This is to allow everyone who would have previously submitted to the PCQ to still get a chance to host while still maintaining the integrity of the League game. If you're interested in submitting a League setup for review, PM any of the listed judges or the bookkeeper. Make sure you get a response to acknowledge it was received.
Replacements into a League game get a small bonus to their score to catch them up to other players and a little extra as a token of appreciation.
Oh my gosh, can you believe X, Y & Z? Were those judges even thinking? Who put them in charge, anyways?
We welcome feedback on the rubric. A lot of time was put into it, but it was a daunting task, and we'll take all the help we can get in this preseason of sorts.
This thread will be used to discuss the MTGS Mafia League. You will also be able to view your current season and overall League scores here. I wil update the OP later.

So let's say there's a neutral that must accomplish a task as well as surviving till the end of the game. Does surviving before that task is accomplished give any points?
Reya, correct: As a non-SK Neutral is likely neither a threat to the town or the mafia, no points are awarded for their lynch.

KoolKoal: Feel free to take this with a grain of salt since self meta isn't particularly helpful, but I think I get scumread mostly for style over substance, but also for a certain lack of substance over style. It's not so much what I AM posting most of the time (though sometimes that can seem bad) but what I'm NOT posting. I've been told I come to non-obvious conclusions a lot, so when I post, quite a bit of the time there's jumps in logic that people can't follow and they think that's scummy. I get that accusation about a lot of questions I ask specifically. People call them "busy work" when the questions are legit etc.
As far as things to ignore, I can't think of anything. I would suggest you focus less on what I'm doing and more on how I'm doing it. That's probably more likely to be accurate. Like I've just said, what I do tends to come off a little weird, but if you look for how I do it, mindset comes into play and maybe you figure out something useful.
Penalties:
-4 for replacing out voluntarily (gains no points or bonus after receiving this).
-----------------------
While I understand the logic of wanting to penalise players for replacing out, I think the loss of point earning potential and bonus points is enough of a penalty in the case of voluntarily requesting a replacement. The -4 seems harsh if the person has legitimate reasons for having to request a replacement, RL effects us all sometimes, perhaps a graded penalty system would be better.
-0 points for the first voluntary replacement request, -1 for the next request and -2 for the next and so on. More complicated system but it discourages replacement without punishing people for RL.

Smile your day could be worse, so I did smile and it was worse.
Players are not penalized if they replace out for reasons like a relative dying or their computer exploded but if they want to not be penalized we need proof (through PM is fine). The League games are a bigger commitment than just standard games.

I think it's a really bad idea to request players to show "proof" of legitimate reasons for replacing out, it's bad taste and opens a can of worms that lead us nowhere plus can make bad feelings arise between members for lots of reasons.
I also greatly disagree with reducing the penalty for voluntary replacing out, because if you replace out for legitimate reasons, you certainly have more things to care about in your RL than some points on the internet.

The game is not being dumbed down. Control is doing fine; Draw-Go is not the only kind of control. Aggro is doing fine; Red Deck Wins is not the only kind of aggro. Creature combat is an important core concept and belongs in every color. Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
Do remember that these are max values. It's based on judge discretion. A player replacing out at L-1 would probably warrant a maximum -4 penalty, for example.

Do you realize that by giving variable penalties for something that's boolean (to replace out or not) the judges are encouraging people to lie and/or romance their reasons for outing right?
It's also recommended to avoid using judge discretion when it's not really needed. In soccer for example they are implementing the usage of sensors to detect when the ball has fully crossed the goal line or not. In magic the rules have have been evolving to reduce judge leeway in deciding penalties because consistency is good.
-4 for bad sportsmanship (flaming, trolling, etc.)(judges rule, mod nomination).
So receiving an infraction is also penalized? Even when Atlseal is the one that gives it? (the guys is like a machine-gun at giving warnings for the smallest of reasons )

Maybe instead we should look at it as this:
Everyone is penalized -4 for replacing out (regardless of game status) unless they have a circumstance that the judges consider to be valid. In which case it can be reduced.
Start harsher then go through an "appeal" process to reduce the penalty down.

That's a fair concern. However, we're not judging based on how good their excuse is for leaving the game. If it has a negative impact on other players, that is taken into consideration.
Infractions may be punished, but maybe not. We'll use caution there. We want to discourage unsportsmanlike conduct and flaming, but we're not just going to echo everything that gets flagged. Again, we consider the health of the league only; not just one game or the subforum (which is someone else's responsibility).

Again, I don't like the prospects of considering what makes a good excuse to replace out or not. It shouldn't matter why a player needs to replace out and I'm not about to ask people about their business.
The point reduction is there to discourage players who might consider replacing as a strategic option. It's not there to keep players who need to replace in the game. This is why we have a 3/6 league game requirement with the extras being replacements for lower scoring games. If a player gets well into a game and replaces, she/he may always join a later game to fix that score if it's unsatisfactory.
Since a handful of people narrowly missed Game I sign-ups, I'm going to send out a mass PM whenever PCQ voting and/or game sign-ups go up. If you DO NOT wish to receive these PM's, please notify me by PM and I will take you off the mass PM sheet.
(PM, because I didn't think I said it enough in that post. Lol.)
What you guys have to realize is that any replacing (regardless of reason) is bad for any game. Even if it's a raw deal, losing points for replacing out is a deterrent to people trying to game the system as well as a reflection on the trouble the organizers and mods have to go through finding a replacement to a league game as well as the momentum lost int eh players and the delays caused in the game waiting for a replacement to join and catch up. If something happens and you need to pull out of a game, then the last thing you need to worry about is the league standing.
Also, -4 is not a big penalty across a season - but habitual is.
Townie Scoring System:
-3 points for being lynched.
-2 points for every townie death they participate in.
-1 points for every townie mislynch they did not take part in, but were alive for.
+1 point for every scum death they did not take part in, but were alive for. +2 points for each unsuccessful or successful end-of-day vote against a mafia or SK (does not supersede -2.5 penalty - you get both).
+3 points for every mafia or SK death they participate in (through vig, track, investigation, etc.).
Question:
I don't quite understand what the bolded phrase means. So if I'm town and I vote scum at the end of the day, regardless of they or I are lynched or not, I would get 2 points. Would I get 3 points for actually lynching scum? I just wanted clarification as it seemed a bit odd.

I don't quite understand what the bolded phrase means. So if I'm town and I vote scum at the end of the day, regardless of they or I are lynched or not, I would get 2 points. Would I get 3 points for actually lynching scum? I just wanted clarification as it seemed a bit odd.

While it doesn't state it specifically, it's a safe assumption that this includes being on the wagon of a lynched Mafiate or SK.
But as I was reading the SK points, they only get points for anyone they kill that's a threat (aka most PRs and mafia). It seems like the +3 is given if your role allowed you to catch scum and only +2 if you lynch. That's what my confusion was.

There was a typo on the rubric. Somehow, a line from a previous version of the rubric slipped through and somehow found it's way onto the final version of the rubric:
+2 points for each unsuccessful or successful end-of-day vote against a mafia or SK (does not supersede -2.5 penalty - you get both).
The bold and italicized portion does not make any sense under our current rubric as there are no longer penalties for certain actions or events. It has been redacted from the rubric because it is archaic, doesn't make any sense, and has no practical implications to the league itself. I have redacted it on the first post but kept it on there as not to seem as if the League Judges are hiding something. It was simply a clerical error that slipped through the cracks.
Edit: I didn't mean to say "there are no longer penalties" which is untrue. Yes, there are penalties. However, the penalty the bolded portion refers to no longer exists.
Due to an oversight on my part, I forgot to publically announce three rules that are already in effect in the league. The three rules can be found in this link: click here.
The explanations for the rules, which were already in effect but just not public, are as follows:
Hosting Rule: Due to the competitive nature of the league, the judges find it is not in the best interest of the league at large to let a league player host a league game. League members can submit setups to the judges and have a judge host them, but they would have to sit out that game due to insider knowledge.
Spectator Chat: Again, this rule is also due to the competitive nature of the league. The judges believe a spectator chat where information could possibly be leaked or shared is too risky for the Beta version of the league.
Deadline Rule: This equation has been adopted and used, but an explanation of the requirements for deadlines has not been espoused yet. In order to keep the games moving in a timely fashion, the judges have opted for this equation to determine the deadlines in each league game. Since there are six league games, finishing them in a timely manner requires there to be some sort of universal deadline system for every game. This is what the judges have decided upon implementing for the Beta season.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns that involve an ongoing league game, please PM a league judge. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns that DO NOT involve an ongoing league game, feel free to post them here so we can discuss them in a timely manner.

So will the next league game go up right after the first one is done? Or do we have to vote on it again? Just wondering if its ready and waiting. Like me.

Posting this from a PM exchange between me and Arnnaria at his suggestion...
Is there any reason why there can't be a second, full size League game running at the same time C&B is running?
I wouldn't recommend starting two League games at the same time, but I'm not sure there would be a problem with starting a second one when the first seems about halfway through.
I'm not sure about the other judges, but I can predict some activity issues arising from running two simultaneous full-size league games. There's also some exclusionary elements to consider since not every league player will want to play in two at a time. We are currently gauging interest in a mini league game, but we have not yet decided when such a game would be run if we have an adequate count of players.
Given that we the current Normal are very slow, and there is a Specialty yet to start, I would be very leery of running ANOTHER large game.
It could also be problematic with the non-League players if the League games are using up a lot of the player participation, making the other games harder to fill/get replacements for.
There's no excuse for the league games not to be the usual games. Just turn Arcadic's next game into a league game if you guys want to play another.

I think that the problem with this idea is that some of the league judges might want to play in certain games, but since they're judges, they wouldn't be able to do so.
It could also be problematic with the non-League players if the League games are using up a lot of the player participation, making the other games harder to fill/get replacements for.

Thank you for your participation and support!

The Mafia League is a series of six mafia games for league players. To join the league you must commit to playing three of the six offered games. You can play more (and there are incentives for playing more), but three is the minimum. If you play more than the required amount, the new score (if better) will replace your lowest scoring game.
League games will follow the commonly accepted rules of Mafia. If you show unsportsmanlike conduct, replace out in two league games, or are modkilled in two league games for rules violations, the judges have the right to disqualify you from future League games.
We welcome feedback on the rubric. A lot of time was put into it, but it was a daunting task, and we'll take all the help we can get in this preseason of sorts.

Sure, fire away. I might not be able to give you an answer, but I can prod the judges if you have a really pressing question/concern.
Signups for the first game, "Checks and Balances", will be posted by the host Ganderin_Dan sometime today or tomorrow.
@Reya and Cyouni: I forwarded your queries to the judges.
Cyouni, I would direct you to this aspect of the rubric (bolded for emphasis):
Non-SK Neutral scoring system:
-1 point for leaving the game without fulfilling win condition.
+1 for each successful step towards win condition.
Post game scoring:
+2 for fulfilling any alternative/additional win conditions.
+4 points for townie win.
+4 for non-SK neutral fulfilling win condition.
+4 points for mafia win.

I also greatly disagree with reducing the penalty for voluntary replacing out, because if you replace out for legitimate reasons, you certainly have more things to care about in your RL than some points on the internet.
Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
It's also recommended to avoid using judge discretion when it's not really needed. In soccer for example they are implementing the usage of sensors to detect when the ball has fully crossed the goal line or not. In magic the rules have have been evolving to reduce judge leeway in deciding penalties because consistency is good.

(PM, because I didn't think I said it enough in that post. Lol.)
Also, -4 is not a big penalty across a season - but habitual is.
Question:
I don't quite understand what the bolded phrase means. So if I'm town and I vote scum at the end of the day, regardless of they or I are lynched or not, I would get 2 points. Would I get 3 points for actually lynching scum? I just wanted clarification as it seemed a bit odd.

I'll forward this to the judges.
While it doesn't state it specifically, it's a safe assumption that this includes being on the wagon of a lynched Mafiate or SK.
Tired of corporate corruption ruining your favorite MtG site?
Come join ours!!
We even have Mafia!!
But as I was reading the SK points, they only get points for anyone they kill that's a threat (aka most PRs and mafia). It seems like the +3 is given if your role allowed you to catch scum and only +2 if you lynch. That's what my confusion was.

Is there any reason why there can't be a second, full size League game running at the same time C&B is running?
I wouldn't recommend starting two League games at the same time, but I'm not sure there would be a problem with starting a second one when the first seems about halfway through.
Just a thought.
It could also be problematic with the non-League players if the League games are using up a lot of the player participation, making the other games harder to fill/get replacements for.
Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
I think that the problem with this idea is that some of the league judges might want to play in certain games, but since they're judges, they wouldn't be able to do so.
This.
Also this.
Yes, there is, actually.
