Does anyone remember the combo deck with this and Time warp? Is there any reason I haven't seen anyone even mention it in modern? It was a pretty good deck, it's not vulnerable to the same hate as other combo decks, and it has a pretty good shot of recovering from Tormod's crypt and the like. It just seems well positioned right now.
I'm talking about the card outside of the storm deck. I know it's earned it's place there. Can it be competitive by itself?
Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.
Pyromancer Ascension is a very good card in Storm. It lets you double cantrip, and you can go through all sorts of hate with it. It gives you an engine to draw your entire deck. I doubt there's a place for it anywhere else.
In my opinion, Pyromancer ascension is what makes storm decks good. Yes, they don't need it to win, but it gives storm decks a turn 2 must-counter card that also functions as redundancy for the deck.
Pyro is awesome, but it's best in storm where it's only 1 part of the deck's engine, and can't be hated as easily.

Out of these, only Storm is really viable because the other two are way too dependent on the graveyard and the namesake enchantment to function. When PA was in Standard it was the Dredge of the format; you basically win game 1, then hope you can pull a win through all the hate in games 2 & 3. It wasn't easy to do with Qasali Pridemage, Maelstrom Pulse and Relic of Progenitus around, sometimes maindeck.
I play it in storm and sometimes it just feels like the best card in the deck. It is ultra-powerful. Luckily, the deck doesn't rely on it to win, because of the abundance of graveyard and enchantment hate running around, it just makes the deck more consistent if I can "turn it on."

I tried Ascension Storm (only engine is Pyromancer Ascension, only 4 rituals, 2 Muddle the Mixture, 1 Grapeshot, 1 Banefire) post-bans. Due to the loss of efficient dig (Ponder/Preordain) and Rite of Flame (Desperate Ritual wasn't the same because it couldn't power out Ascension on Turn 1), I found it was 1 turn too slow for the format. I would predict the Time Warp-Call to Mind version would be 3 turns too slow for the format (seriously, you're trying to repeatedly cast a 5-cmc spell).

Yes, I was referring to deck 3. I'm not so interested in the card in storm decks. I know it's earned it's place there.
Now might be the time for the deck to strike back then. Birthing pod is the only deck that consistently runs MD enchantment destruction. (Online, at least, quasali pridemage doesn't have a large presence). I think that if you play ascension correctly, the opponent may need that destruction to be instant speed. It definitely seems worth testing to me.

Time Warp combo is pretty bad. Neither of the cards in the combo do much by themselves, and one of them is 5 mana.
The vulnerability to enchantment hate is what kills it IMO. You just can't win unless Pyromancer Ascension sticks and ticks. Storm can win off just Past in Flames.
It is so not a must counter in storm, in fact i never ever counter it.
Thing is, if it gets to two counters, all the counterspells in your hand might as well be worthless. And get to two counters it will. The coverage of Finkel's match from PT Philadelphia last year demonstrates this in game 3.
Whoa, storm can totally go off with just past in flames.
What would the combo deck need to make it work in modern? A way to win without the enchantment? A way to play the enchantment and go off that turn?
