Hey, guys! I hope you're all doing well. I have created a new podcast called Joy of Cubing. It'll likely come out every couple weeks. Shows will be about 45-60 minutes long and I'll have a new guest on each show. The first episode has been posted with special guest Eric Klug (Klug on these forums). Feedback is appreciated!
Just listened to it and it was a good first episode.
It could be clearer when your talking about Powered, Nonpowered and Common/Uncommon cube.
I agree totally about the green aggro section.
I don't agree that signets makes green ramp worse. I think that's an artificial argument set up because it sound logical on paper. In my experience it's actually the opposite.
Don't agree as much about storm being fun, great or in any way good for cube. If you want to support some kind of combo-deck I think Splinter Twin is a much better fit for cube.
A nice first episode! The level of difference in your mike volumes was a bit problematic though. I'd love to hear a couple opinions on archtypes and suites of cards like Storm, reanimator, blue aggro, etc.. that you guys like to push, or you think under perform (like the green aggro and Storm commentary) and the cards you think can make each style viable. So for example you might riff on if blue aggro needs to be a thing, then these are the cards you'd want to be in the Cube for it.
you're one of the few cube theorists who's actually open to new things and tries to create balanced formats instead of tossing in whatever works. it made you one of the only reasons to come to this website, and as such i'll be listening. make these as long and frequent as possible

I uploaded a new version to address the level differences. I'll be sure to make sure future episodes don't have the same issue.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely put those as topics to discuss in future shows.

Yeah, I wish there was a better way!

Thanks for the feedback. I actually agree on the green ramp / Signets argument. The big difference here is putting in all the other signals allows other colors to play this role as well. If you want ramp to belong to green and green only, then cutting Signets/Talismans helps.
Kojiro, I listened to both and appreciate the time you put into making them. Your enthusiasm for cube comes across quite well, and I think you generally have good repore with your guests. My suggestion for you is to take the theme of this past podcast and apply it to your plan for each show; i.e. to hone in with a laser focus on the main topic for the day, rather than have a goodstuff.cast. The reason I say this is because I couldn't easily discern a thematic difference between ep 1 and ep 2. They both felt like "Cube Musings" with Kojiro and guest. Maybe it'd be helpful if you laid out a series of questions or subtopics for your guests beforehand.
Also, I hope you update your list on here sometime, given that your new listeners may be interested in what you've been doing with your cube.

I've been trying to deliberately hone in on topics, so I am a little surprised that hasn't come across. I'm still getting my chops, so hopefully after a few shows I can have it down to a science
I was able to listen to the first episode on my way to Nashville this week for work. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I think Power Conduit makes a solid point. The first episode really did feel like "Kranny and Klug talk about cube". By no means is that a bad thing (both you and Klug are awesome dudes with awesome outlooks on cube and cubing), but I didn't feel like there was very much talk at all about the On Deck Binder. That could be because of the shortness of the episode, though, and my being more accustomed to the typical 2+ hour long Third Power cubecasts.
Either way, keep it up, man. Even if it's just Kranny and Guest talk about cube, it's still going to be a fantastic show. I'm looking forward to the day that you get wtwlf on it's just an hour of you and him engaged in friendly debates.

I'll definitely take these suggestions into consideration for the next show.

Think of your podcast as a business presentation you are giving to cubers. So this time the theme was mission statements. You talked about them, but you could also give us three or four different statements and how they would affect card choices. For example, 'All the most broken cards in the history of Magic' vs 'The ability to aggro out of any color combination' vs 'Balanced format' and some cards that fit perfectly in each, but might not make the cut in others. Moat for example is definitely in the first category, definitely NOT in the second and a possible for the third, but only if you have other cards of that quality for other colors.
I've listened to all three podcasts and think they are just getting better each time. I like the format of having a different "guest" each episode: it's like having a cube chat show.
What worked well in the last podcast was that you talked about three really well defined topics. The first two, house rules and pimp, were more interesting than I expected. I don't run any errata'd cards but decisions about sideboards, advice, mulligans, etc are just as important. We're not just cube developers, we're the DCI as well! I'm not into pimp, but I enjoyed hearing how it is more the process of obtaining the cards you want, and I'd never really appreciated that.
The discussion of cube as a way of retaining players was very interesting, and something I had not thought of. I would not be playing magic if it weren't for cube. The thing is that my son is taking an interest, and after nearly twenty years of Magic, if Wizards can retain the parents, then they can tap into a whole new generation of players.
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less." -Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass
I haven't listened to episode three yet, but I gotta agree with Humpty. I love this format (pun intended). Having a different cube personality on each episode is turning out to be quite awesome and your options are almost near endless. You could have Usman on the show to talk about new releases or discuss powered cube or Stybs on to talk about common cube. Evan Erwin could guest. And it'd be freaking awesome if you got Tom LaPille on!
Regardless, I really dig the show, man. Great job!

Thanks, Cali'! It really excites me to be getting such positive feedback on the boards. MTGS has been a huge influencer in my cube design and philosophy and I really value all the comments and suggestions for making a better show.
I just wanted to let you know that I listened to all 3 episodes yesterday and today and greatly enjoyed them =) They could be a bit longer, but I greatly enjoy the format of the episodes nonetheless. Looking forward to the next ones!

Thanks very much for the feedback! I am trying to keep them pretty short given that I don't have a heck of a lot of time these days, and I could easily see myself rambling for a good 2-3 hours. Maybe for a set review show...
I've been enjoying these podcasts as well :), looking forward to your next ones, I share Sylvar's want of longer podcasts, but It's not like I won't listen to them if they keep their current length. I'd love to see you get the incontention guys to do a podcast about cube someday as well, both Joey and Reuben seem like they could have some cool things to say about cube
