Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Really not a fan of this card. Leak is better early and you have to waste a couple snags early to make it work late game. Nothing worse then trying to counter something you know you cant , just to have it in the graveyard for later. Not to mention the graveyard hate available can stop this card cold. In my opinion there are just better counters in the format.
The only deck I could see playing this over Mana Leak is a "hard" control deck such as U/B Teachings - aggro-control wants Mana Leak because it's slightly better in the early game, and tempo wants Remand due to the extra card it gets. Combo also wants Remand to draw more and dig toward their answer.
Or, at least, I want to say that, and I would, except for Snapcaster. Rune Snag and Snapcaster do not get along well at all.
2.5/5 for true control decks, where this is a reasonable choice.
1/5 for tempo and combo, where Remand is just far and away better.

its not bad. i've considered using it as a 4 of in fae. my current list has 4 of them in it. typically, you'll find at least 2 with the remands and cryptics. though if you're playing a snapcaster deck, leak is clearly better.

Yeah, the Leak is just better. It's always costing them 3 and it's going to be better with Snapcaster. If we're not running Snapcaster and we envision seeing a bunch of cards, with our graveyard in-tact, then perhaps the Snag could be better. But I just don't envision the decks that would play Snag to not play Snapcaster.
This card is really controversial. I think it's a really cool card, but its hard to say if its better than mana leak. And yes, it does require that you run 4
In any other deck in the format I wouldn't dream of using it (see delver variants, merfolk and faeries)
delver, clearly not, since delver's strength comes from using snapcaster. but merfolk and fae do not use snapcaster, so i don't see why its not okay to use in those decks. the real limiting factor is that you need to run 4 or none, and not all decks have room for that.

I totally don't agree that Mana Leak is better early. It's a complete wash early. Practically no one has 2 extra mana, let alone 3 extra mana on turn 3. I am a fan of Rune Snag.
i agree with my fellow fowl that rune snag is basically at its best in an aggro-tempo deck like merfolk or illusions. if you're not playing snapcaster mage, it's the best 2-drop way to make something not happen. the one less the first time is a marginal sacrifice compared to the one more, three more, or five more that you could get later in the game. also, it gets better if your opponent plays rune snag, since they see all players' graveyards.

I've tried both Rune Snag and Mana Leak, and while nearly no one has 2 extra mana on Turn 3, people really start having only 2 extra mana on Turn 4. I hated how the first Rune Snag started being dead by that time (as dead as Spell Pierce).
Snag basically has to be a 4-of or a 0-of. Have 3 of it and the first one won't arrive in time. I don't think Tiago makes it that much worse, but Gifts decks that want to tutor for 3 counterspells may not like this card.
I used to vastly prefer it to leak, as the scaling and frequent late-game relevance tend to make up for the occasional mid-game problems. However, the anti-synergy with SCM has forced me to run leak. It's unfortunate really...

Everyone has said it. Snappy makes it worse, and I'd usually have some number of Snapcasters and Leaks than 4 Rune Snags in almost any deck. Same splashability, weirdly different versatility. Love the mechanic, but generally outclassed by other options. (Heh, as usual, the answer is "Snapcaster Mage is good." Doesn't matter what the topic was.)

This is why I started playing magic in the first place. It wasn't PT aspirations just making noobs cry by doing things that are perfectly fair.

Most decks would play Leak or Remand instead.
EDIT: That reminds me, I had a chat once with a Merfolk player. It's not a terrible option there since that deck doesn't play Snapcaster.

Worse than Leak in most Modern decks.
I have always liked this card, so that makes me sad, but it is true.
