now that's what i'm talking about...
i absolutly love this card. plop it down in any red or white deck and its usually the right call.
i find the best use of it's first two pumps are as a mana sink when you don't have anythig else to do

Level up done correctly. I think this should be a 4 of in any boros, red, or white aggro deck. I love this card. being able to make him bigger on your opponents turn is huge.
I played this guy in both WW and Ponza, and he was great in both. An excellent choice if you want a one-drop that can remain relevant all game. I think this guy could be a format all-star if only there was a deck that really wanted it. The problem is that white-based aggro doesn't exist, and in red-based aggro it's pretty hard to justify this over Goblin Guide.

Huh, I just played against this card for the first time a few hours ago on Modo.
Great card. I used to think he was terrible in theory, but after seeing him in action I've had a change of heart. Good mana investment, especially in the early game, and can absolute destroy if left unanswered. The art is trippy too, so I like it.
It's a good card, but it's hard to justify cutting any of Goblin Guide, Hellspark Elemental, or Keldon Marauders for this, which are the three all-stars of red-based aggro in Modern and Legacy, and I'm not sure if I want to be playing any more creatures than this trio. I'd rather be playing Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, Shard Volley, Lava Spike, and Rift Bolt before I'd play Figure of Destiny. I mean, it might be good late-game in W/r Martyr-Proc.
It's good, but I just think it's outclassed in the decks that would otherwise want to be playing him.
Rating: 2.5/5. Better than your typical role-player, but there are better choices.

Figure is an excellent card and very powerful, but I just don't think he's what you want to be doing in modern right now. Having to invest that initial second mana into making him a real threat is actually huge in modern right now. Decks either have a bunch of removal or just don't interact on a plane where figure is a card you want.
I like him as a 1 or 2 of in a few decks. He is a great card to grab with Ranger of Eos, and generally isn't a bad turn 1 play either. It would be interesting to see him in a Delver build, where you can sit back with counter magic or what not and then level him up at EoT.
He looked great on paper when I first saw him, but tested him and found him to be disapointing. Hes good no doubt, but RDW/burn wants to be playing other things. Boros seems to be the only deck that really wants him. 2.5/5

Hes a great card but I am not sure if Boros should run him. Boros is all about speed and Figure seems more like a mid range / control card to me. Why would boros have free mana to pump up Figure during an opponent's turn? Typically they use free mana to burn you, not pump a critter. I am not intimately familiar with the Boros class of decks, but I have not yet played against one that ran figure to the best of my recollection.
That said Figure is a fantastic card that can fit into a variety of decks.

Not every game goes the way you want, and it's nice the have a card that does things when the game goes long and grindy. In a normal game you'll certainly be able to pump him to 2/2, and most of the time he won't get further than that...but the times he does, you'll be happy to have him.
That said, the times he doesn't, he's a really bad Goblin Guide. I can't imagine playing him in Boros unless you've already got the full sets of Lynx and Guide.

Figure was an excellent card back in TSP-LOR-SoA season but I haven't found a good home for it since in anything I put it in. It's decent early game, but cards like Student of Warfare and Goblin Guide just do it better.

Mhjames: mtgsalvation: I DON'T SEE HOW THIS CARD IS GOOD. I KNOW PATRICK CHAPIN USED IT AND WENT 8-0, BUT THAT WAS A SMALL TOURNAMENT. THE CARD IS TOO SLOW. YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THE OPPONENT HAS A SPELL IN THE GRAVEYARD
You guys are crazy. Lynchpin of white based aggro (if that's a thing, and I've had some success in the DEs with W/r). Being able to field a threat that is good on 1 AND 6 is sweet.
I have never liked this card because of removal. Every time it gets played, it dies to removal. Yes, the argument gets made for most cards, but this one is such a mana hog that it really doesn't get there. Would you like to spend 5 mana to get a 4/4? As something smaller, or even a 4/4 for 5, you're not getting enough value. You're not racing most decks, you're not putting enough pressure, it's just not doing it. I do play a deck with Paths and Wraths, but that's largely irrelevant when a lot of the format can block him until he's a 4/4, and the half that doesn't block a 4/4 isn't concerned at that point.
If you're base white it competes with Student of Warfare, which is arguably better.
And also white-based aggro isn't a thing right now.
Student doesn't eventually get evasion. It's just that its easier in a way to "level" because you don't need the mana all at once even if its instant speed.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Great card overall. Usually quite threatening as it can get waaaay out of hand fast. Can and usually is tutored for by Ranger of Eos. Has been a staple in Boros from as long as I can remember. Also showed up in mono white aggro strategies when Modern was just starting up (although these decks haven't showed up at all since then).
I recently put one in my Boros deck as a 1 of, and the one game I got him out after running out of steam he won me the game. I was very happy to be able to get a 8/8 flyer out of a deck comprised of small 1 drops.
That being said, I probably wouldn't run more than one of him just because he doesn't really lend himself to a quick game, which is what i'm going for. I may run a second in the side incase I play against a deck that makes my deck slower than normal.
Every time I have tried him in a deck, I have taken it out for Student of Warfare. It is just better, IMO, as long as you have access to consistent white mana.
Student allows incremental mana infusion, where as FoD requires all at once infusions. This gives you flexability, and a genuine use for your W when you have it left over mid game.
Student requires two W infusions to become relevant in Modern, FoD requires two infusions of (R/W) and (R/W)(R/W)(R/W), and it gets nothing resembling evasion at that point.
Student never needs to be leveled past level 2 in Modern. A 3/3 with First Strike can act as both removal and evasion for most of the common Modern threats. Until you have dumped a crazy amount of colored mana in to FoD it is just a vanilla beater. FoD will almost never be able to reach Avatar level in competitive Modern, so you should not even look at that when rating the card, and the same goes for SoW's level 3.
