We have decided that starting tomorrow we will no longer be choosing random cards, and instead be doing our best to choose cards that are actually worthy of discussion (have potential for modern).
Meaning, some will still be worse than others, but hopefully none will be completely unplayable. We also won't be choosing ones that are known good cards; our goal is high levels of discussion and we don't want "goyf is good, duh" or "chimney imp is bad, duh" threads.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns on this matter, PM t_c or myself.

I like this card, but I don't know if it's good enough for Modern. Seems like some kind of UBR Delver-type deck would be the best place for it. Maybe with Bobs as well? Actually that deck doesn't sound half bad now that I think about it, but I'm not sure the Specter really belongs...

But is it a better 3 drop than Geist? And does it warrant the loss of Steppe Lynx?
Mhjames: mtgsalvation: I DON'T SEE HOW THIS CARD IS GOOD. I KNOW PATRICK CHAPIN USED IT AND WENT 8-0, BUT THAT WAS A SMALL TOURNAMENT. THE CARD IS TOO SLOW. YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THE OPPONENT HAS A SPELL IN THE GRAVEYARD
I think this card could be good in a hand-disruption style of deck. Between Liliana of the Veil, Smallpox, this, Blightning, and perhaps a couple more flashback and/or unearth cards, I could see some sort of Grixis resource denial / prison deck take shape.
It is somewhat slower than it should be though, which is hurting...
Rating: 2/5 - not unplayable, but it's hard to find a deck where I'd want it.

I built a UBR delver deck at one point and used 2. They were good and striking back from the graveyard was great. The deck lost too much life though, between bobs and thoughseizes, etc etc and no Kitchen Finks to get it back and no Goyfs for a big body.
But is it a better 3 drop than Geist? And does it warrant the loss of Steppe Lynx?
I have limited experience with Delver in Modern so I couldn't say for sure. Actual evasion is nice. Is the discard worth throwing away three damage? Maybe not. But this thing swings into Kitchen Finks without fear which is more than I can say for Traft.

Discard can be big, but if I want a three drop discard, I'd rather have Sword of Feast and Famine which I can play in any deck and is a big tempo swing.

I rock this in a Grixis (primarily black) deck with Rotting Rats, Liliana of the Veil and a few other cards such as Gravecrawler. It's a great addition to my build, which is actually very strong against certain decks in the meta.
EDIT: okay, that wasn't really about the card so much as my use for it. The flying 3 damage is nice. Not much in the meta runs fliers. The extra utility of 3 damage + 1 discard for 2 mana from the grave is surprisingly effective. I like it, but like many said, it has to be in the right build.

Ah. Yeah, it does kind of laugh at Finks, eh? That's a point in its favor.

SoFaF is cool because it sticks around; but it's not really on curve at the 3 drop spot; given the equip cost. (like, if i were building a deck i wouldn't consider it a 3 drop on curve, especially in something more aggressive)
I think it's resilience is cool. Too bad Path exists. But, it is resilient to all types of burn and trades nicely.
I don't think a fourth turn discard is strong enough in the format. I'd much rather be playing Thoughtseize or Inquisition. Remember that turn 4 is the big turn in Modern, so if you're on the draw, this card will be quite useless. It's also a pain to cast, and it actually has to hit the player to do anything, thus it's not a guaranteed discard. The place I'd see it is a Grixis Control, but I doubt the deck will be good in the format.
See, I see it in Grixis Smallpox, where both the discard and the unearth abilities are relevant. It would also include 4x IoK in it, possibly Wrench Mind, Smallpox (of course), Liliana of the Veil, etc.

It's a better Blightnings 5-8 than Mind Rot is.

it doesn't swing for Six Damage, but it is almost as or more resiliant to creature hate than Geist (almost)
I don't think it's worth losing Lynx.
