Default [CS] Wotc Previews June 30: Cover of Winter

Well there it is, the card we speculated about earlier today.
The card is cheap, which plays in its favor. It gives WW an early boost for the attack, essentially 2 turns of free attacks without casualties. Combined with the other white beats already seen (The Jotun Grunt for instance) ww or BDW could receive a nice boost with Coldsnap.

Decent card, i'm sure it'll see some play. Cumulative Upkeep can get very costly though. I really love the art of this set, every card so far looks amazing.

i dont like it, would make you run really heavy snow covered lands, and i'm sure there will be at least 1 big snow permanent hoser, as much as they're doing to promote them.

if you play this you should atleast have SOME control of the board to do anything, and damage prevention doesn't usually win games, although it can delay the opponent from killing you.
Still, it is a BAD healing salve, the only thing making it playable in limited is you can divide the damage prevention.

Reminds me strongly of Elephant Grass, and Elephant Grass got some play.

Interesting you mentioned useing this in an aggro deck, as when I saw I first thought "Ooh, Ghostly Prison replacement" and didnt even consider the fact that you can use it to save creatures in combat. Pretty cool. I like it.

It will be good under one condition, that there is some card that says something along the lines of "you don't have to pay cumulitive upkeep", which is at least remotely feasable.

Its not terrible in limited, but there will surely be better effects for less demanding costs.

This probably won't be staying in play for more than one turn, if it's even played, in Constructed. In limited, where combat is more important, the card might matter.

What really ruins the card is its inability to prevent damage from burn spells.

Like I said in the Assassin topic, me no likey. It reminds me too much of Snowfall. It's useless. I mean, cumulative upkeep is crap as it is, and snow mana ain't so impressive either, but combine the two to make an ability that's lame? Bleh. It's a rare too. Badness all around.

Ugh... this is alright I guess, better than the crappy assassin, but still not terrific.

Actually, the effect applies to all creatures that would be dealing combat damage to you or your men. If seven of your opponent's creatures are assigning damage to you and yours, you get seven instances of the damage prevention.

That said, this is the best card they've previewed yet, and likely one of the best ones that will get a chance in the spotlight (not that shoving it in the Magic Arcana is a spotlight, exactly). It's not good for Limited, but in Constructed, where you can play with 24 Plains or 24 Snow Plains--or heck, play it with some Godless Shrines and 20 Snow Swamps--it can take combat out of your game entirely. A great card for control.

It's a decent stall card in the early game I suppose, but I'm not excited about it that's for sure. It's a kind of weak fog effect that sticks around and gets more foggy but ties up your mana as well. I guess you can use it to buy you a few turns while you get enough land on the table to wrath, then not pay the upkeep and clear the board.

3 mana to play and it does nothing the turn it hits the table unless you pay more mana, in which case you'd rather it be a Wrath anyway so....meh.

It's a continuous asymmetrical fog. Not actually a common type of effect.

It makes your opponent's damage largely irrelevant. It makes attacking/blocking completely safe unless they have a guy with Power > your snow covered mana.

And remember, once it becomes too much of a cost... sacrifice it, drop a new one, and pump the prevention up to where you wanted it.

It singlehandedly stops creature damage to you for many turns.

Moment's Peace was good, Solitary Confinement is good...

This could easily see play. If there are enough decks that focus on creature based beatdown, it will - or if they give us a good answer to burn as a finisher (is Ivory Mask in 9th?).

It's too expensive to be the new elephant grass. Would have been great at :w: instead of 2:w:

What's the cost to put an age counter on it? I can't read it? Is it 0 or snow?
