Mishra has always been one of those cards I really really wished worked as intended in EDH,
a free Mirrorworks as your general? Hard to pass up.
Sadly it doesn't work that way, but there are other great angles Mishra can be taken.
Why Mishra?
Mishra has a unique ability that allows him to be downright silly when combined with the right set of cards, mainly Nether Void and Blood Funnel, among others to control the board and establish enough advantage to either lock the board or "combo" out.
You will enjoy playing Mishra if:
- You like creative combos with more than 2-3 pieces
- You like non-infinite combos (storm version)
- You like having multiple options and playing a deck with several game plans. (Stax version)
- You like complex interactions and are familiar with the complexities of the stack.
- You like having a quirky general with interactions that no one sees coming.
Mishra is not for you if:
- You hate combos
- You appreciate beatdown more than control
- You don't like being the archenemy (stax)
- You like using mainstream or tier 1 generals
- You like long games (storm)
Now, you might be wondering why this thread is called "A Tale of Two Mishra's." That's because there are 2 decklists here, two decks for two very different play-styles. The first, stax, is optimized for multiplayer and the second, storm, is built for the french 1v1 banlist.
The first of these decks is below, and it's focused on the powerful interaction between Mishra, Artificer Prodigy and Nether Void. Together, this means that all of your opponents spells will cost 3 extra and all your artifacts gain "can't be countered." This is an extremely powerful stax tool that can do major damage to most decks and strategies. One major weakness to this engine is uncontrolled ramp (Azusa, Lost but Seeking and the like), but that's why we have Winter Orb - shutting down ramp since 1995.
The main game plan of this deck is to use one of your many tutors to get one of your control or stax pieces, mainly Nether Void, to make the game much harder to play for everyone else, then using your advantage to get your combo pieces, Goblin Welder, etc. or other win condition, Karn, Silver Golem, Possessed Portal or Tezzeret the Seeker and win.
This combo is pretty simple. Start with Goblin Welder equipped with Thornbite staff, swap your artifact creature with your artifact in the graveyard, this untaps Welder because a creature died. You can now tap Welder over and over to swap your artifact creature and any of the above to get the effect listed. Basically, get Triskelion and win.
Stax/Control Elements
Mishra also has a control angle that will be the point of your deck until you hit one of your combos.
Control Synergies: Mishra, Artificer Prodigy + Nether Void
Everyone else's stuff costs 3 more, your artifacts remain the same price.
Add Blood Funnel and your artifacts cost 5 less then everyone else's regular spells.
Smokestack + Salvaging Station lets you comfortably put smokestack at 2 or even 3 and feel no significant damage, as your opponents will be sacrificing creatures left and right. This combos with thopter assembly to let you keep smokestack at 5-10 without any damage, quickly cleaning up boards. Additionally, possessed portal + salvaging station lets you just wait out your opponents until you can swing with Mishra for the win.
The above decklist is modified for the french 1v1 EDH banlist - here are some cards that were cut when bringing this from multiplayer to 1v1. This deck is quite powerful and can still squeeze out turn 4-5 wins in multiplayer (I've hit storm 93 on turn 4) so these are some cards that I took out.
These definitely increase the power level of the deck significantly so if your playgroup is mostly multiplayer they are worth the include and can make this deck competitive against 3 opponents.
Step 3. Play an unreasonable amount of artifacts to dig for Tendrils of Agony, resolve with storm count 20+. You can also play tendrils at a lower storm count (9) and play Snapcaster Mage, Remand (on the original at storm 10), or Yawgmoth's Will and play it again to kill.
MAJOR OVERHAUL
Lots of nonartifacts out, many new artifacts in
Stax made a more major element - other nonessential effects decreased
October 9, 2012
- Storm and Stax decks separated (Blood Funnel and Nether Void respectively)
- Stax deck overhaul, some 50-60 cards in and out.
- Storm deck added, v. 1.0
- Retitled "Tale of Two Mishra's"
Ya that's actually what inspired me to make this deck, I had always wanted to build something with Mishra (I guess that's my inner Johnny) because he's like "that card" that just doesn't work. That gave me some awesome interaction's to play with and I ran with that.
You forgot to list the Mishra + Blood Funnel + Future Sight + Top combo?
Also, the Tidespout needs 2 artifacts to work, as you need to target when you put the Tidespout trigger on the stack.
I didn't even see that combo, I'll add that for sure.
Also, you make a really valid point with Tidespout, that makes it much less effective... I need to tune this list down to find more artifacts for my other stuff and make it more focused, I played a few games and I always find myself with random pieces of different combos. The only one I actually managed to pull off was Nether Void + Guile + Grapeshot.
I'm not gonna pretend to have any idea whats going on here. But Cruel Ultimatum seems like a little mana intensive for such a one sided effect. It goes great with the stax elements, but seems weak with the combo ones and horrible in the opening hand. Not to mention that late game most players can shrug them off.
I might cut it for Decree of Pain as it controls the board and normally draws you a large amount of cards.
I would love to see this thread getting a lot more love and maybe primer status one day. I'm really interested in this deck going forward.

Thank you, I really appreciate that.
Cruel Ultimatum was a last minute add, that definitely is an option for cutting as it doesn't play well with Nether Void or Blood Funnel and doesn't really fit much in the rest of the deck. I think I want more artifact ramp, maybe Thran Dynamo or Gilded Lotus?
Cowardice doesn't really do what I want, though it is an interesting card... Basically, I need something that allows me to return an artifact to my hand when:
a. I cast an artifact spell (Currently Tidespout does this)
b. An artifact etb under my control
I'm looking for redundancy and in artifact form because it would play well with Nether Void, not be as expensive, I wouldn't die if Tidespout gets removed, and not be such a big target.
Heartless Summoning doesn't do anything on its own because it doesn't have a built in counter (meaning by the time myr retriever, or any other creature it kills, dies Mishra's ability will have resolved already and it won't be able to grab it), combined with Nether Void I see it doing some nice things but Nether Void could do most of those by itself.
I haven't even considered Salvaging Station! Looks like it has a lot of potential...
EDIT: Trance makes a good point, Heartless stops a whole section of my combos, though now I kind of wish it worked, getting my Artifact creatures for 5 cheaper than the opponents sounds like a blast.
Sorry to double post, but I felt like this was significant enough to deserve its own post.
I realized, after several games with this deck, that Mishra is very powerful when combined with my main stax effect, Nether Void, and that is something I really want to abuse. However, I found that I was screwing myself half the time and Nether Void wasn't one sided enough.
I decided that my control elements should be much more oriented towards stax, a one-sided Nether Void is a really strong base to lock my opponents out of the game. With manabarbs down and enough artifact mana I can still play my spells using Mishra/Nether Void while my opponents have to pay 3 + 3 life for every spell they cast. If I can get smokestack online at the same time, each counter comes with a huge amount of significance to my opponents, but with salvaging station and any kind of sculpting steel effect I can easily outlast while drawing cards off of things like chromatic star and actually being able to play my spells.
My current major debate is whether to run Winter Orb. I know the correct thing to do is play it, but I don't want this deck to become too awful to my opponent, and Winter Orb + Nether Void/Trinisphere is pretty much game right there.
Without further ado, here are the cards I have been considering. Almost all are artifacts meant to go into the deck and replace non-artifacts that are currently cut by Nether Void.
If I were to build the deck, I would go a bit more towards the combo build, and include a ton of tutors (transmute maybe?) for the critical pieces (I gather to be Blood Funnel and Storm/Gravestorm).
Nice, Mishra's my favourite general. I just posted a thread with my own take.
I originally tried Blood Funnel, but once my Mishra got killed and I didn't have the mana to replay him, I cried. I'm glad it's working for you though.
I should point out that I don't think the Tyrant trick works... its bounce target has to be on the battlefield at the time the ability triggers. It can still work, but you will need two 2cc artifacts to pull it off... not a big deal.
As far as the cards you are considering for inclusion - there are a number of solid ideas there. I'd actually consider running Winter Orb over Trini... since most EDH cards are on the more expensive side anyway :). All 3 copiers are solid, Fabricate is pretty much a must-run and Clock gets out of hand very quickly in an artifact deck. I wouldn't run Lotus Bloom though... you usually just want it on turn 1, else it's bad. You can transmute for it, but I think the gain from doing that is pretty low.
Overall, seems pretty dirty though lol. Very nice!

First of all, thank you for the compliment, I've had great success with more mainstream generals before, (Karador, Ghave, Riku, GAAIV) but this is the first deck that I'm really excited about.
I'm running Grim and Demonic Tutor, but I think I'm going to add Vampiric Tutor and Imperial Seal back in because I need the ability to actually find my win-cons once I have a strong board. I think I'm becoming more of a fan of beseech the queen, but I'm also considering cutting some lands due to the massive amount of artifact ramp I have now. I'll upload a changelog and updated decklist tonight.
I don't like Merchant Scroll or Mystical Teachings because the cards I want are artifacts, and Increasing Ambitions is 8 mana with nether void out and I don't like having to sac a creature as well with blood funnel out.
Now, transmute is awesome, it's not more expensive with nether void out, and I'll be able to find blood funnel/mortarpod with it. (Not to mention it's uncounterable)

I saw your deck, left you a short post.
I'd feel horrible for cutting people out of the game with Winter Orb, which is why I don't run it right now. I like Lotus Bloom mainly because it does amazing things with Salvaging Station. Speaking of which, I should really find ways to make that come out more often...
I'm unsure about Unwinding Clock, it sounds awesome but I'm having trouble seeing how it would help me. I think it's more important I find spots for utility and tutors for added consistency.
Thank you both very much for your comments, I'm still working on putting an update of my new decklist up with a changelog.
Gosh, I've been totally misreading mishra. I thought his ability brought the card back to your hand, which allows for infinite storm just with Mish, blood funnel and an artifact.
Still, I like how the deck can play solid stax with Smokestack and Salvaging Station as an engine. Will someone please explain to me how the Salvaging Station + Copy artifact combo works?
What do you guys think about going a more stax direction with the deck. Adding Frozen AEther, Desolation like stuff?
Also, there have GOT to be more combos with Mishra + Blood Funnel + ________
Any ideas?
Salvaging Station + Copy effects just lets me get more things back every turn/trigger. Drawing 2 cards a turn or 2 cards for every single creature leaving is crazy.
I like the other stax effects, but the issue is that since they aren't artifacts I'll have to pay the extra mana from Nether Void which is still going to be my first target for tutoring due to how strong it is with Mishra out.
For instance, Frozen Aether for 7, not so great anymore. I'd rather play an artifact version like Tangle Wire, which actually sounds like a great option now.
There really should be, the problem is it only considers artifacts with EtB or just tap abilities that cost 2 or less. (You could go for 3, but you'd be relying on Cloud Key or similar, making it a 5 card combo which is just too much)
Prophetic Prism and Ichor Wellspring (neither of which I am running, I should be) provide redundancy with Elsewhere Flask. More importantly a recent addition that is critical is Mortarpod, this gem lets you win on the spot (cip, sac the creature for 1 damage in response, then return to hand with Tidespout, repeat.)
Hmm... I was actually not planning on buying Nether Void, as $130 cards are a bit over the high school budget. Is it worth playing the deck without?
I agree, I only have it in this list (along with grim tutor and imperial seal - I wouldn't pay for those) because I play on LackeyCCG or casually with proxies for the most expensive cards with my friends.
You could definitely play this list without Nether Void, but you need to go more all in towards stax/combo than this list does. I would recommend combo as Nether Void is the crux of your stax mode (it is really brutal). Additionally, Blood Funnel is a really powerful card on its own and there are lots of tricks you can play with every artifact 2 cmc or less free (or heavily cheapened) so you can go that way instead of stax.
Ok, if I were to go more all in on combo, what would be the best way to use Mishra? To me, the Tidespout Tyrant combo seems a bit slow. I like interactions with Salvaging Station (that card can combo with everything), but I'd really love to include the Artificer in at least one combo. I know he makes artifacts (2CC) free, but going infinite would be so much more fun.

The tidespout combo is very slow, I'm currently brainstorming other combos with Salvaging Station. Here's what I can come up with on the spot.
Edit: Also, March of the Machines is ridiculous with Salvaging Station (+0 mana artifacts) (Gravestorm, Disciple, etc.)
Blasting Station with Salvaging Station and Flayer Husk is win as well.

A one-sided Nether Void is vicious enough, but couple it with Trinisphere, Sphere of Resistance, or Lodestone Golem, and it quickly becomes difficult for your opponents to do anything.
The deck can also abuse smokestack and possessed portal extremely well in conjunction with salvaging station and thopter assembly.

1x Vampiric Tutor
1x Mishra's Workshop
1x Imperial Seal
1x Grim Tutor
1x Sol Ring
1x Timetwister
1x Mana Crypt
These definitely increase the power level of the deck significantly so if your playgroup is mostly multiplayer they are worth the include and can make this deck competitive against 3 opponents.
Strategy for Storm
Step 1. Play a cost reducer such as Helm of Awakening, Semblance Anvil, Blood Funnel + Mishra, or Etherium Sculptor.
Step 2. Use artifacts including ones that cantrip (and Riddlesmith) to dig for Null Profusion or Vedalken Archmage. Play said draw engine.

Steel Sabotage'ng Orbs of Mellowness since 2011.

I might cut it for Decree of Pain as it controls the board and normally draws you a large amount of cards.
I would love to see this thread getting a lot more love and maybe primer status one day. I'm really interested in this deck going forward.

Thanks!

Good catch, that is even greater because I can use it for infinite mana/storm with nether void/funnel, mishra, and tidespout.
Can anyone think of something to replace/give redundancy to Tidespout Tyrant in artifact form?

Maybe Cowardice can help. It is much more limited the Tidespout though.

What about Salvaging Station?

Sadly it kills Welder

1 Gilded Lotus
1 Thran Dynamo
1 Coalition Relic
1 Lotus Petal
1 Lotus Bloom
1 Blinkmoth Urn?
1 Mox Opal
1 Mind Stone
1 Mox Diamond
1 Chrome Mox
1 Everflowing Chalice
Anti-Land
1 Manabarbs
1 Winter Orb?
1 Seat of the Synod
1 Great Furnace
1 Darksteel Citadel
1 Vault of Whispers
1 Reliquary Tower
1 Mishra’s Workshop
Copying effects (Salvaging Station)
1 Sculpting Steel
1 Phyrexian Metamorph
1 Copy Artifact
Misc. Support Artifacts
1 Time Sieve?
1 Vedalken Archmage
1 Shimmer Myr
1 Unwinding Clock
1 Planar Portal?
1 Darksteel Forge?
1 Darksteel Plate?
1 Fabricate
1 Lightning Greaves
1 Smokestack
1 Salvaging Station
1 Chromatic Star
1 Flight Spellbomb
1 Ichor Wellspring
1 It that Betrays
1 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Panic Spellbomb
1 Terrarion
1 Executioner’s Capsule
Things with ? next to them I am unsure about if they deserve inclusion.

Have you guys considered Bitter Ordeal?
Mishra, Artificer Prodigy+2CC artifact+Blood Funnel+Bitter Ordeal= Exile everybody's decks.
If I were to build the deck, I would go a bit more towards the combo build, and include a ton of tutors (transmute maybe?) for the critical pieces (I gather to be Blood Funnel and Storm/Gravestorm).
Grixis gives us Perplex, Muddle the Mixture, Dimir Machinations, Drift of Phantasms, Beseech the Queen, Gamble, Merchant Scroll, Mystical Teachings, Increasing Ambition, and a ton of expensive ($) black tutors.

Any ideas?
EDIT: And they can't be creatures.

The tidespout combo is very slow, I'm currently brainstorming other combos with Salvaging Station. Here's what I can come up with on the spot.
Mishra, Artificier Prodigy + Flayer Husk + Blood Funnel + Salvaging Station + Sac Outlet
= infinite...
Krark Clan-Ironworks = Mana
Arcbound Ravager = Infinite/Infinite (+Trikey = Win)
Alternatively....
Disciple of the Vault shenanigans?
Edit: Also, March of the Machines is ridiculous with Salvaging Station (+0 mana artifacts) (Gravestorm, Disciple, etc.)
Blasting Station with Salvaging Station and Flayer Husk is win as well.
