I'm looking at building a Thromok, the insatiable commander deck, and am looking for some feedback as to cards to cut/add. I've already got a list worked up, but I'd like to get some feedback before I start gathering components. I've tried to make this post look like Donald's posts because I think his posts are very good.
Gameplan of the Deck
This is a Voltron type commander deck, though there are a few other options as far as ways to win. Thromok grows exponentially when you feed him, but you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket... on the other hand... this deck can get really crazy if you have Pandemonium or Warstorm Surge out, a way to give Thromok haste, a fling in your hand and Stalking Vengeance in play. That's a lot of if's, but even if you don't have all that, any one could be devastating.
You might enjoy this deck if:
-You enjoy casting big creatures
-You enjoy doing massive amounts of damage
-You enjoy unexpected combos
-You are playing for fun
You probably won't like this deck if:
-You are playing competitively
-You enjoy control type decks
-One shot kills
-Your group does a lot of "tucking"
Aggravated Assault and Sword of Feast and Famine - This is the coolest combo in the deck. As long as you can get a single damage through, you can activate Aggravated Assault and do it again... and again... and again... this can go infinite if you like.
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Chancellor of the Forge - This combo can net you a ton of tokens. Since this will be a late game combo (both Kiki-Jiki and Chancellor cost a lot of red mana), you can really crank out some hors d'oeuvres for Thromok.
Thromok, the insatiable and Pandemonium or Warstorm Surge - This was mentioned above, but you can one shot someone with this combo. You'll have to feed Thromok 7 other creatures (making him a 49/49), but that shouldn't be too hard with this deck. I had originally I thought you could do it with just 21 damage from Thromok, but turns out it has to be combat damage to pull off that trick. Thanks to SoulSalvage for clarifying that for me.
Thromok, the insatiable and Fling - Also mentioned above. This can be a finisher. Fling is the damage dealer in this situation, so you'll have to make Thromok big in order to one shot someone, but 7 devoured creatures would do it.
I haven't actually played this deck yet, so I will be updating this section, but it seems that this deck would be weak against tuck and possibly control. I can see blue and/or white causing big trouble for this deck. There are a few things to try and keep blue from countering, including Gaea's Herald and Cavern of Souls, but other than that, you'll have to watch your opponents mana and cast Thromok when it's least likely he'll get countered. Once he's on the board, you can put greaves or boots on him or something, but getting him there might be an issue. Also, a well timed Path to Exile might be troublesome, so you want to put protection on Thromok asap. I'm considering Vexing Shusher to help with getting Thromok onto the field, and maybe something along the lines of Sylvan Safekeeper to keep him there. Any suggestions in this vein would be nice.
Please comment! Constructive Criticism is always welcome.
This list looks fun =D Me gusta! Try some more Fling variants, such as Soulblast. And I know it's really hard to get one, but if you get your hands on a Doubling Season...
You've got a good start to a goblin toolbox, might get some value by expanding on it a little. You've almost got Lightning Crafter combo with Kiki-Jiki, Lightning Crafter + Skirk Prospector and you can add in an artifact destroyer with Tin-Street Hooligan. Goblin Recruiter is a great tutor that can fetch up the full Lightning Crafter combo.
For protection I really like Sylvan Safekeeper for creature heavy builds. While he does have a drawback if you need to activate him he's a creature and only costs one mana. Additionally, unlike with Greeves, the safekeeper can work at instant speed and can protect itself.
I'd like to see some more creature tutors, the first 2 I'd add are Worldly Tutor and Chord of Calling. They help find a lot of your important cards and Chord especially looks useful since you'll often have a good number of creatures in play for the convoke.
Your deck is a steaming pile of poop without wort the raid mother. Add her and then enjoy conspiring good spells like ramp, token generators, or removal.
I agree. We should all only play g/x decks because they are the most objectively fun and anyone who disagrees does not know the truth about EDH. Everyone should just play their decks because interaction beyond high fiving about how many land are in play is unfun and equivalent to casting Stasis while kicking puppies. I for one will never play with anyone who casts tutors, removal spells, blue cards, things I arbitrarily decide I don't like but will probably cast myself later.
@Liquid - LOL, ok, that's descriptive. I'll see about finding her a spot. Conspire could be truly nast in this deck.
@Donald, I'm a little slow on the uptake sometimes when it comes to combos; not to mention that I was not playing magic during the lorwyn block, so I'm not up on all those rules. How does the Kiki + Skirk or Lightning Crafter work?
From your post, it seems that you don't understand how general damage works. Pandemonium and Warstorm Surge will deal damage when you cast Thromok, the Insatiable, but the 21 general damage has to all be done with combat damage.
On another note, Fires of Yavimaya might be a good card to add. It's another way to have global haste for all of your creatures, although it isn't as easily searched out as Anger is. Fervor is another enchantment that might work in your favor.
Ah, thank you SoulSavage, I did have that ruling wrong. I was under the impression that any damage from a commander counted, and since it is the creature that's dealing the damage with Pandemonium and Warstorm Surge, I thought that would do the trick. Still, cast Thromok big enough, and he could kill someone upon entering play. It only takes seven other creatures on the board... I like Fires of Yavimaya, and Fervor is good since it only requires one red. I'll have to play the deck a few times and see if I need more haste granting things.
Magnetic Theft would be great if Sword of Feast and Famine is on the field and you need to get it through unblocked. You could magnetic theft after blockers are assigned to put the sword on an unblocked creature, I believe.

Squirrel Nest and Earthcraft - A classic infinite creature combo.

Thromok, the insatiable and Stalking Vengeance - Thromok got blocked by a creature with deathtouch? Oh well, he can still one shot someone if he was big enough.
