This is a variant in which we draft the cube and play EDH with it.
Number of players: 3-5 players.
Pack/deck size: 8 packs of 9 cards. Deck of 60 cards +1 commander.
Color restrictions: Players can only play cards from their commander's colors as per EDH rules. Players may also play any phyrexian-mana cards regardless of color restrictions. Flashback costs may be ignored for color purposes. Avacyn's Pilgrim and Noble Hierarch may be played in any green commander's deck.
Drafting the generals: Players get a commander distributed at random from a pile of 20 commanders (10 dual-color, 10 tri-color). He/she has one chance to "mulligan" into another commander, which he/she must keep.
Variant: Players get 3 commanders at random and they can use any one of them (This can result in some commanders being underplayed).
Thanks eidolon, that is very useful information. Have already started making changes based on your statistics, keeping in mind the interests and needs of my playgroup.
These are some nice additions, although, I would cut something other than Brimstone Volley - the card is an very efficient way to finish the game as an aggro player or get the creatures off the table that are out of reach of your regular burn spells that only deal 2/3 damage. How about cutting one of the Blaze effect?
Condemn is an awesome removal spell in control decks (even better than P2E). It is not a must have, but I'd rather reduce the number of 4 drops in white by cutting the aura.
Both the Blaze effects are really popular in drafting partly because of Channel and partly because of versatility. I cut Ball Lightning because I realise it does almost the same thing as Brimstone Volley, except the volley is instant and much easier to cast.
Angelic Destiny has been amazing everytime it is cast and people pick it very highly when playing white. Perhaps it's just my group? It interacts very well with some creatures and is a good game-closer. Condemn is very good, but I feel that AD is more highly favored in my group. I would like to cut something for condemn though, but the 4-drops are kinda tough. Maybe Armageddon? Since I already run Ravages.
I'd agree with Eidolon that there are probably better cards to cut here than Condemn and Brimstone Volley ; I'd suggest emeria angel or transcendent master and Ball Lightning sticks out on the other.
Not considering dreadbore?
Both Emeria and Transcendent have been popular picks, but I can see cutting Transcendent for Condemn. Emeria is way too good not to cube with. However, it kinda hurts to cut yet another creature for a non-creature spell since my cube is pretty skewed towards creature-light decks, and transcendent has always been quite popular in my group as well. He's definitely the weakest link, but I'm not sure if he's weak enough to cut for condemn. I shall leave condemn as it is for now.
Definitely considering Dreadbore. I forgot about it!
Went shopping for cards today, and besides upgrading some cards into shiny variants (foiled my dark confidant!), I did a bit of update on the cube list as well as based on last night's playtest.
Blue, Green, and White is still strong as ever, so I don't think I'll be touching those. Black's drafting has been increased dramatically. Last night 4 out of 6 players were playing black. That leaves me with red, which was drafted only by 1 player. This was also noticed in smaller draft sessions.
I did a bit of soul-searching and realized that red is really confused in my cube. It has some aggro cards, and some midrange cards. Decided to give its aggro component more support by giving it more cheap burn spells. This should make it much more splash-able as well.
Balanced the multicolor section some more. Now all the guilds should have 3-4 cards instead of some having only 2 whilst some had 4. I'm not a believer of completely balancing the guilds to every single last land and flashback spell, but this latest tweak should make color-choice in drafting more interesting. U/R had been severely underplayed in all sessions. The increase in light burn and Fire/Ice should improve that. Sad to see Bolas go though, but no one ever picks him.
Putrefy to Maelstrom Pulse is a direct upgrade since I managed to get a nice promo pulse for cheap.
Channel has not been any good at all. Cut it for a really iconic and useful green card.
Still looking to cut a white card for Condemn. I'm inclined to listen to eidolon and cut AD as I don't want to cut creatures, but AD has been a group favorite. Will consult my group again. Probably going to cut Paladin En-vec for another white beater, since there are way too many protection from black creatures in the cube.
TL;DR - Made the cube less fancy, more functional.
As some general advise, I would recommend using the card tag in your own thread and add a list of the changes in the post where you mention them as well.
While there are arguments for keeping offcolor flashback and Phyrexian mana card in their printed color, I really dislike the classification of cards like Kird Ape / Vedalken Shackles as printed.
Looks fine except for the part where you are cutting Chandra. If you want to remove a nonaggressive red card, I'd start with either Faithless Looting or Devil's Play. The X spells is also does something very similar to the walker, but at a much higher cost.
Did you mean tagging my cards in the changelog? I've just done that.
You're right, I will reorganize the colors again later on.
I agree on Chandra. Faithless seems out of place for red so I cut that instead. I think I would want to keep just that one Blaze effect in the cube.
I don't think I can cut the Champion without players never going mono red. Everyone in my group loves it (though I think Hellrider is generally better).
I think I'll be able to play vandals in my cube once I sort out the color sections and move kird ape to r/g. Thanks! Totally forgot about the vandals.
Followed eidolon's advice and regrouped some stuff.
Balanced all the guilds, counting spell-lands as part of their number. All guilds should have 4 cards now, including the spell-lands, with the exception of Gruul having 5. I'm thinking that extra card shouldn't matter, since red and green are the lowest-drafted colors in my cube.
Added a couple of extra stuff to the cube, and made changes according to the advice given by people here.
RTR update. Managed to get all my cards. Changes are probably not gonna be popular around here, but I have to keep the interests of my playgroup in mind.
The changes are semi-tentative, in case any of my players miss Sigarda or something. Hence I won't be posting this on eidolon's list just yet.
The only bad change I see is losing Tangle Wire. That artifact is insane. It can push an aggro deck over the top, is stupid in token decks, and can help control/midrange stall for time. It seems symmetrical but it is so lopsided it's sad. I'm fairly confident that Tangle Wire is never leaving my cube. I recommend cutting Chaos Orb or Sphere of Suns instead.
Gave green an even higher creature count. Treetop village is actually not that good in an environment like the cube, while search for tomorrow is just another ramp card, which the elf replaces. I think top-decking a 1/1 is marginally better than top-decking another land, and the elf enables more interesting early plays.
Cut gargadon because it has seen close to no play all this time. Cut brimstone volley because the morbid is quite difficult to trigger. If young pyromancer underperforms, brimstone will be going right back in.
Armageddon is a painful cut. Someone in my playgroup made the point that having 2 destroy-all-lands effect in a small cube is a little overkill. I decided to cut the cheaper card then.
Theros update, with slight power-bump for aggro (hrough cuts) as one of my players complained that control is still a bit too powerful relative to aggro, which I agree with.
The following are the changes I have not made yet, as I have not traded for the cards yet. I will update the list asap when I acquire the cards:
I'd really miss Phyrexian Arena. What about losing Juzam or Mercenary Knight instead? I like it more than Curse, even though it's a great card.
And what about Ophiomancer? It's a great source of splashable CA for every black deck. I like it more than Both of the above creatures and more than Bone Shredder now.
And if you're worried about not having discard outlets/enablers for reanimation effects in black, Oona's Prowler is a stellar creature in that role that's missing from your list.
redthirst is redthirst, fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse. He was the leader of the Fires of Salvation, the only clan I'm aware of to get modded off the forums so hard they made their own forums.
Degenerate? Sure. Loudmouth? You bet. Law abiding? No ****ing way.
