Is Cold-Eyed Selkie viable in modern? With exalted, Elspeth, a Sword or +1/+1-counters from Oran-Rief or Gavony Township he can get nice buffs and provide sick CA. Plus Islandwalk seems nice for evasion in the current meta. In my rather aggressive Bant deck, he can give me some late-game reach and swing games around that I'd have lost otherwise.
On the downside he is a 1/1 for three mana and needs to untap and deal damage for it to matter. And it has no kind of protection from spot removal. I currently try him in my Sideboard against slower decks.
It's nice with Exalted or Merfolk lords, but in general, you need cards that are good alone, and Geist of Saint Traft is probably taking up that slot in Bant. He appreciates buffs just as much (especially against aggro), but he swings for profit against combo all the time.
I love Cold eyed selkie with elspeth knight errant. its so good when it gets through. but yea. Lightning bolts and removal make her sad. Geist and trolls is the way to go with bant if you choose the aggro route.
She used to be played in Vintage in, i think, something called Noble Fish? But, in Vintage most decks will have an island in play pretty soon so she's guaranteed to be unblockable more or less.
Modern applications? You could probably pretty easily fit her into any mono G, mono U or UG deck. I think she'd shine brightest next to Noble Hierarch or Rancor.
Elspeth is also a strong choice to pair her with, and she'd be decent in Merfolk, i think.
Would it be good? Probably not, as a 3 drop she's heavily outclassed even by some of the 1 drops in the format. In terms of CA a 2 drop does better than her (Bob) and of course Geist of Saint Traft makes her look pretty silly, i think.
I think if you built the right deck she could be neat, but i'm not sure as to what the competitive quality of it would be.
If you're talking specifically about her applications in Bant, i think Geist of Saint Traft, Rhox War Monk, Goyf, Kitchen Finks, and Troll Ascetic out-do her. I think Geist and Goyf provide just as much late game potential. Although, if i've got a couple of spell pierces/mana leaks in my hand i could see riding her to victory easier than the others, provided they have an island available to swing into (especially considering the types of decks that run islands).
Maybe in merfolk, or in other forms of blue or green based aggro, but it's hard to justify it for it's cost. Bant could possibly use it out of the sideboard against other blue decks.
So, in summation, maybe. She definitely has potential.
I'm not so sure about the sideboard though, but Ajani CotP helps with Selkie as a cheaper, mini-elspeth.
Tarmogoyf is the main win condition though but a T2 selkie off a Hierarch can get there, especially followed up with rancor and mana leak back up.
