Heyo. I've been away from the forum for a while, maybe got burnt out on it, dunno. I had a request to post this deck.
It's fairly old so, any new suggestions would be great. Budget friendly, I think. Goals are first, then the list, then possible evolution of the deck, then lastly, Tips and Tricks below. Deck does pretty well in a casual environment.
I've listed cards with alternates below them (in 0x) since there are a lot of similar creatures and you can mix and match somewhat.
Goals:
- This deck harkens back to earlier Magic times and is well, pretty simple. Certainly many older players have done Thicket Basilisk with a Lure on it even since Alpha, it's fun.
- Bring back the combo and allow you to do it multiple times per game.
Evolution:
- A few newer cards seem appropriate. Deadly Allure?
- Turntimber Basilisk looks like it's typically 1GG "Destroy two target creatures" which looks nice.
- Could be a little more consistent if I take some time on it.
Tips and Tricks:
Combos are fairly obvious, but a few things that might not:
a) Lure critter on Foundry means your other critters are unblockable until they have removal for Foundry.
b) Gorgon really is your MVP. 90% I use Revive as extra copies of Gorgon. It wrathes them and saves your critter to do it again.
c) Sledge's drawback (when put on Taunting Elf) is negated when you put the destroy effect on the stack and then use Symbiote to bounce the elf and replay it.
d) Untapping their stuff so that lure works used to be a big weekness of the combo back in the day. Automaton really solves that issue, but a few untappers are key.
Guess that is it. Hope it's not too terrible. Comments / suggestions / hate mail ?! welcome.Thanks.
TheEndIsNear: I did update my list, but only with this deck. I hadn't updated it in about a year! I've made new decks, I know it... maybe I need to go through them all and look.
XYZ: Slag is pretty expensive, but Revenge looks nice! I will look into it. I wouldn't mind even casting it for 6 in kitchen table casual, methinks.
SELVAXRI! King of Misfortune & Master of Rocket Launchers "Do ya feel lucky? Because you'd better start runnin' while you still can." 375 Misfortune {+3 signed AP's} & 104 Rocket Launcher (41 AQ/ 63 Rev) Edgar Rice Burroughs, forgotten legend of the word.
Awesome, the old lure/venom combo, fantastic!
Warden, I love your decks more than pretty any other...bc they're just So fun and casual
This is really interesting to me, ive Never really thought to make a whole deck around this combo though...just supplemented yer average big-green deck with lure & venom and occasionally got it to work.
I dig your deck! I'll ramble about how I would build it, if you or anyone cares for another perspective
Off the top of my head, I like the ramp in here, cuz we're in green. Other options are Some combination of rampant growth / natures lore (if u have even 1 dual) / urborg elves (could allow easy blue splash for negate if competitive group) / quirion elves / Sakura tribe elder / utopia sprawl. I would hunch that 24-26 total "land + ramp" wold be right (Id personally do 18 land incl a couple bayou + 3 natures lore + 3 elves). I think 27 is too high personally
I would thinking something in the neighboorhood of 10-12 of each lure & cockatrice effects. Would you prefer more lure effects over cockatrice effects?
This leaves something like 12-16 cards left. There's a few other things I would envision for this deck.
4x jangling automaton (nice find!) or other such untapped effects, really cool card!
4x "some large thing" with good power to cost ratio (and won't be getting blocked). A stronger critter that can just attack and benefit from the whole deck combo to deal damage more quickly like deadly insect or erhnam djinn, sengir vampire...what have you.
4x bequeathal or some other card draw. Stick bequeathal on a Venom'd taunting elf (or some other creature who's sure to die care-of the deck's combo) and rock. I think bequeathal is really great here, but there may be better.
I like the gorgon fun tricks action and could include regen via any of greens other 200 cards that regen (regeneration, broken fall) to the dude that's doing the venom'ing. Or some good 'ole pump, ala Rancor or Unholy strength...
I have to ask the question...does black need to be in here? Seems there are enough lurish and basilisk critters in green, and that simplifies the manabase and ramp to 4x wild growth and 4x llanowar elves.

Deathtouch would work well in here either as equipment or just as creatures themselves.

i wonder if Spawning Pool + Noxious Field + Venomous Fangs (when Pool is animated) would work...

Old school group, sometimes more beer than cards. Revised thru Tempest block (and a little of Urza), sorry if I don't know all the new cards
