I bought a playset of these when AVR came out, in hopes that he would go up. He's removal on a stick for monogreen, which is fine in standard, but in modern, well, then you're playing monogreen so you have bigger problems to worry about.
I do think he will go up when Gut Shot rotates, as he is still very good in standard

I'm not a fan of creatures that need tons of work to do anything, unless they're very powerful. I don't think Prey Upon on a stick is very powerful. With removal where it's at, even in Standard right now, it's asking a little much. Snag your guy that's fighting, you lose a turn? I agree Gut Shot is holding him back in Standard, but with the removal where it's at and creatures where they are at, can you justify a 4-drop removal that has to untap? I'm also not a fan of mana hogs, and this is almost like a Figure of Destiny. 6 mana to kill a dude doesn't see like what you want to do in Modern.

He wants to be grim lavamancer. If his activation cost was g and thats it, I feel he could be a lot better.
You're paying 1 mana more to potentially kill off stronger creatures than what Grim Lavamancer could burn out (like any X/3). He can be tutored with Ranger of Eos which is pretty sweet, but Ulvenwald Tracker really needs GSZ to be effective in order to minimize the risk of only being a 1/1 for G.
He's too slow and too vulnerable. He's weak for the same reason Noble Hierarch is weak, and Noble doesn't see that much play while being a better one drop.

Yes, GSZ being banned hurts this card the most. I wanted to run 1 of him in Naya but decided it wasnt worth it without a good tutor. I would obviously love to run him with Knights, so I could cut the 1 awkward Arena that I sometimes try instead. He is so much better. You could go get Sejiri Steppe too and make him even better.
Because you claim that Noble Heirarch doesn't see much play, when it is in fact played in 3 Top Teir archetypes, just off the top of my head (Bant, and both flavors of Pod). Thats kind of like saying Delver doesn't see much play, since its only played in WUR and RUG

Noble Hierarch is the card that makes bant work
EDIT: D'oh!

It's not a claim, it's what I have seen. I didn't see it winning anything in the PCS, and I haven't seen Bant being a major player anywhere since the Spring. The Meta has shifted, as it does virtually every month. Bant is too clunky and too slow to be consistent enough to put up the numbers that it would need to be competitive. I like the deck, it's just not where you should be if winning consistently and having a good record is what you want to be doing.
I have not seen a WUR or RUG list with Noble do well. I've played both and neither had Noble, because it's not what those decks want to be doing. Besides, how is WUR casting Noble Hierarch anyways?
Too many people throwing around the Troll card without actually understanding what it is the other person is saying...

to be honest, I could see him as a 3 of in a mono green or green/white list with a decent curve. He does allow for removal of things that hurt a considerable amount. I doubt he'll ever be in a top tier archetype, as it's already been pointed out that he's just not as solid without GSZ. It doesn't make him bad, though!

Its a decent card, but loses effectiveness in modern with no GSZ. Otherwise he'd be using Goyfs and KotR as removal tools all day
-MTG Salvation.
Really? I must be trolling because I posted my opinion on the card?
