Back before they changed extended, a friend of mine had a RUG ramp deck that used Steam Vents and Stomping Ground as the off color mountains, and a few islands and forests, instead of Prismatic Omen. It ran a fair amount of counterspells, like Remand and Mana Leak, I remember Rewind being in there though I don't know why, to slow down the opponent while ramping, before casting Scapeshift with counter backup. This was before Primeval was printed though, and I don't know if that version would hold up in Modern, but all I know is I can't wait to try out Valakut. Missed that card after it left standard.

That version will hold up in Modern. I believe it will be the best Scapeshift deck in the format, although Wargate will give it a run for its money. If Wargate is Tron, Scapeshift is Exarch Twin. If Wargate dies to Abrupt Decay, Scapeshift has no such problems.
And I was considering selling my playset of Prime-Times before. Looks like they're staying along with the Valakut's I have. I'm curious to know how this deck-type can turn out. As, the only 2 cards definitely in the deck will be Prime time and Valakut. Possibly scapeshift (?) I was thinking it would be similar to 12-post before cloudpost got banned

Think Lotus Cobra could help? With Cobra and an Explore you could power out a fast Primeval Titan, if that ends up being a key card. Although if you don't run the Titan, Cobra probably wouldn't be that good since you need a bunch of land, not mana.
This is terrible for the format. Scapeshift is one of the most oppressive strategies in the format. It will push out a lot of aggro/midrange decks because it consistently goldefishes Turn 4/5. Last time
It was legal in extended we had faeries and cawblade to keep it in check but we don't have either right now.

To be honest, we still have plenty of decks to keep it in check. I am a bit concerned, however, that this could be oppressive. It's not too hard to counter scapeshift though. And the primeval titan route isn't nearly as strong as long as we have access to efficient removal.
Valakut is one of my favorite standard decks, I'm glad to see its allowed to return to modern. I don't think (or at least, I don't hope) it will be as oppressive as it was in standard.
Its fine actually, I want Scapeshift/Valakut to squash all the aggro/midrange decks so Control can appear. Plus, now I suppose Spreading Seas/Tectonic Edge/Sun Titan will be a thing again. Its gonna be old U/W all over again, but with no Jace fateseal. Ew.

It's surprisingly hard to counter Scapeshift when they always combo off with at least 7 lands (i.e. it auto-dodges Mana Leak) and your Cryptic Command bumps into Remand or another counterspell 85+% of the time.
Scapeshift isn't the issue here, against control you boarded out a few anyways. Valakut never had access to cavern of souls to make sure Titan resolved. Once titan fetched up the two valakuts the game is over especially if you have an omens in play.
The deck pushed out midrange strategies, which I believe is a huge selling point of why to play Modern.
Current hunch is that Slaughter Games may see serious Modern sideboard play simply because it uncounterably removes all the Scapeshifts from the Scapeshift Combo deck.
I just hope that this means my Primeval Titans will gain in value so I can unload them. I never thought this card deserved banning, and it is a nice show of faith that they are unbanning cards, so I approve. Even if it turns out to be a bad call, I approve on the basis of giving cards an actual shot.

Must admit that, after a little bit of testing, RUG Tempo Thresh is one of Scapeshift Combo's tougher match-ups. At least, it seems slightly unfavourable pre-board. Blood Moon might be enough to stall it out.
Unfortunately, the deck likely winning against Jund more than 50% of the time unless it runs Extirpate or Slaughter Games probably isn't helping.
Really? I might be underestimating your list, but I can't see a list having tons of protection AND tons of speed. Inquisition grabs Prismatic Omen. Thoughtseize gets any combo part.
oh well if the pros think its good enough, and mtgo copies then it will be. If its oppressive they'll ban it again and hopefully unban something else.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

What a coincidence! Just finished against Jund. And I won 2-1.
Jund is kind of on the decline right now because like storm there are so many fixed cards in it's main 60 that there isn't a lot of room for improvement. It's still a metagame deck though.

I think jund is going to be a huge part of the pro tour though, it's a consistent deck with not a lot of bad match ups.
So mad about this. They better unban Stoneforge then as well. This is ridiculous, the only reason Stoneblade was so popular was because of this card that they just unbanned.

Yes please. Stoneforge is fun! Borked, borked fun!
Hmm... I hated Valakut when it was in Standard. I was glad it wasn't Modern legal. Now that it's coming back we are going to see a deck that folds to combo, and destroys everything else.
ShiftKut doesn't do good vs RUG Delver, struggles vs jund, and has to race to beat fast aggro, it will not do much to the metagame except that there is a new Teir 1 deck, which is good IMHO

If Slaughter Games becomes a problem, Valakut decks could play Venser, Shaper Savant or Mindbreak Trap could be boarded against it.

At least we don't have to worry about the Quillspike decks running rampant.
