Did anyone see this earlier? Obviously I'm not going to link it because it is disturbing, but basically there was a car chase and the suspect started to run, pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head. It was all aired live on Fox.
Normally they have a time delay on these events in case something goes wrong, but apparently it didn't work. Shep Smith seemed extremely upset and apologetic about it.
It kind of calls into question the morality of this type of sensationalist journalism. Obviously they are cutting to random chases across the country because they are trying to use them as entertainment.
It was a pretty shocking, graphic and sad thing to have on live TV.
I would like at this moment to announce that I will be retiring from this program in two weeks' time because of poor ratings. Since this show is the only thing I had going for me in my life, I've decided to kill myself. I'm going to blow my brains out right on this program a week from today. So tune in next Tuesday. That should give the public relations people a week to promote the show. You ought to get a hell of a rating out of that. 50 share, easy.
Id like to personally thank this person for saving taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars
That is disgusting. I can't look at suicide and see anything but tragedy. Thinking about and actually seeing the desperation of those last moments is absolutely heart-wrenching.
I don't see why anyone would even be apologetic that this was aired. Whether or not they show him killing himself doesn't make him any more(or less) dead.
The news is constantly filled with negativity, but only in a carefully controlled and manipulative fashion. Airing something like this might help people see how ****ty the world is for some. It might also help people to realize that maybe their lot in life isn't so bad.
Networks just need to report the news. Not censor it, not edit it because it is too 'graphic. Just report it. Let people figure out on their own how it affects them.

your opinion. Personally, it doesnt bother me in the slightest.

See, I can't look at suicide and see anything but cowardice. Running from your problems, taking the easy way out. Screwing over any dependents you might have. Not to mention the emotional stress places on loved ones.
As to it being shown on the news: It was a mistake. There are some programs that are fine with running such things. There are some that aren't. I don't think the audience is so immature on that program that they can't handle a little live footage.

There is a difference between censorship and not showing unnecessarily graphic material. News networks can show the worlds problems without actually resorting to airing horrific videos.
I am just as outraged about beheadings of prisoners by terrorists without seeing the videos. If they actually aired the videos on the news I would be very upset to see it, and I think most people share this opinion.
The fact that you take such a callous attitude towards a human life bothers me, but I can see this conversation won't be going anywhere.
Im sorry it bothers you. It doesnt bother me. People live, people die. That's the way it works. Not trying to start an argument. You have your view on the matter and I have mine. I just dont see how im expected to have pity on someone who was dumb enough to commit a serious crime, armed, and feel sorry that he chose to put two in his head.
I'm with ThaDeceptikon on this one. I don't care in the slightest that dude is dead, one less idiot to worry about. That being said, I still don't like seeing things like that so I'm glad I missed it.

I think the problem arises with the fact that you seem to not really see them as a person but just a faceless criminal. You don't know their life, or their circumstances. It is sad that anyone is driven to crime and suicide, for whatever reason. The first step to not caring about people is to dehumanize them.
I can just see you cheering on the imprisonment of the "dumb" Jean Valjean.
There are people that would be fine with a snuff film network. Ratings would be high. Advertising would be profitable.
Sex would be an acceptable broadcast. Combined with violence, you might have televised rapes. All of this could be filmed spontaneously or set up. Setups would be easier for commercial breaks.

I hope people realize that this behavior of dehumanizing anything and anyone is why you have atrocities that you very much would care about.
I live with a simple concept- anything I see that I don't particularly want to ever see used against me, I try to reject.
Dehumanizing and categorizing people is high on the list of things I try to reject.
It was just 40 years ago, hell more like 30, when people freely discriminated against Asians. I hold no stupid illusions that won't ever happen again.
Here's my question: did the network get the footage, know the guy was going to commit suicide, and air it anyway?
Or did they cut to a live feed, with no idea the guy was going to kill himself?
If the latter, what reason do we have to blame the news organization for it? If it's like To Catch A Predator where the show was instrumental in the suicide, then yes, blame away. But if all they're doing is reporting on a chase that lead to a killing, yes, that is indeed very sad and very shocking, but that's not the network's fault, because they're reporting on the chase.
There is a difference between censorship and not showing unnecessarily graphic material.
Again, did the network know ahead of time, or didn't they?
Also, what makes something unnecessarily graphic? Not saying it isn't, but I'd just like a definition. I've seen videos on CNN of the inside of buildings in the Middle East that were bombed by tyrannical governments. Is that unnecessarily graphic in your opinion?
I would argue mental instability is why said atrocities occur. I feel the way I feel, but that doesnt mean im going to go out and shoot anyone.
Maybe im just numb to it all having gone through what I have in my 30 years of life
Unless you lived in the border states of Mexico or in the horrible areas of L.A, I can't see how you could use a jaded life as justification.
In any case, go look up Philip Zimbardo's prison experiment. Go look up Stanley Milgram's experiments on voluntary torture as well. They're horribly enlightening on what ppl can do with absolutely no justification.

One can grow up in middle america and still suffer through countless suicides, murders, drug overdoses, etc.
Choosing to do or not do something is still a matter of mental toughness or self control. Do some ppl do some sick and crazy stuff, sure, but that doesnt make it a normal or sane reaction

There is no way that you are as upset about hearing about a beheading as you would be if you saw it. That is my point. News networks literally bombard us with negativity, but, only if it let's them attempt to control our viewpoints.
What happened here is real life. People need to wake up and see what is going on around them, even if it is something as graphically horrifying as this.

At the risk of turning this into a strange, messed up pissing contest-
I've known folks who suffered absolute mental breakdowns due to stress and pressure. Two of them committed suicide. One was a close friend, the other a guy I knew in high school.
Fortunately, the others didn't commit suicide. They did ruin what were probably fantastic lives ahead of them though.
I've had my brother threaten to commit suicide in front of me multiple times. I've seen him go into a breakdown and run with absolute abandon into traffic. The only reason he survived was because there was a bunch of safe drivers on the road at the time.
I've also had him threaten me with a knife. Though, to be fair, that was more of a display than an actual attempt at anything.
I've been a victim of burglary. I've seen people robbed at knife-point (fortunately no guns yet).
I've came very close to being a participant in a very serious multi-car crash on a highway. The only reason I wasn't was because I happened to be exiting the bloody highway and was fortunately on the far right lane. In short- Pure ****ing luck.
I've came very close to losing my mother.
And that was in a very insulated, secure childhood. Plus, I'm only 24 years old. God knows what I'll see by the time I reach 30. I've heard many, many other considerably more horrible things happening to people that I know or to people that they know. But that doesn't really count, does it?
I know **** happens in life. Not quite at the jaded stage in life though.
Choosing to do or not do something is still a matter of mental toughness or self control. Do some ppl do some sick and crazy stuff, sure, but that doesnt make it a normal or sane reaction
Strongly urge you to go look up those experiments I wrote down. The two of them more or less conclude that the above statements don't really hold water.
In any case. None of this has to do with the original matter at hand-
Condoning the dehumanization of an individual, no matter how well-justified it is, becomes precedent for the dehumanization of others. Unfortunately, those who choose to dehumanize people do not need to have a true justification. All they need is a convincing one. A convincing justification may not be true. It may not be legitimate, but it doesn't matter.
If truth and legitimacy was the only two things that truly mattered, then no atrocity or horrible events could have ever occurred.
That being said, truth and legitimacy are horrible in their own right.

2......20 less than I lost between the ages of 15 & 22 alone, all of them my peers (most recently the mother of my child). I have no desire to turn this in to a pissing contest either. Just trying to explain where im coming from.

I cant say I agree with the aforementioned studies. It still comes down to choice
*EDIT* And my apologies for derailing this thread to an extent. We're clearly off the initial path. Im fine with any news station choosing to censor or not censor the news. I personally believe its my own responsibility to decide if I want myself (and in my case my child as well) to view particular content

He stole a loaf of bread and broke a window pane.
Yes, what a dumb criminal, surely he doesn't deserve anything but our scorn, right?

No, it wouldn't. Widespread outrage would shut it down instantly.
