Once upon a time there was a great spell of massive power. It destroyed all the creatures and left none alive. Then they gave it legs and put it on a stick. That stick is the general under discussion here. His name is Mageta, and he's a human pretending to be a lion. Mageta the Lion.
Now Mageta has quite an ability on him. He can Wrath almost at will. As a result, board states can be hard to build. You gotta do it with non-creatures permanents. Most other people won't be doing that, or at least will be doing it less. Their lack of resilience will be your downfall.
Pros
Game-Changing Ability
Hard for the unprepared to stay in the game
Absolutely does not care what creatures hit the board
What follows is a list of things that I am considering for this deck. Not really sure what to cut for them, so suggestions on that front would be greatly appreciated. Except about the lands. I'm gonna cut Snow-Covered Plains for those.
All listed decks are physical EDH decks. I mostly only play EDH. Deck lists with my requests for suggestions will be forthcoming.
Also I have a cube on Cube Tutor! Comments on that would be greatly appreciated. Additionally if you intend to draft it you have to use 5 packs of 9 cards with 3 bots.
There are two kinds of things here, one for one swaps, and pulls that allowed other cards to be put in. I'm going to go over why each card was pulled and entered. The only difference is that two cards will be paired in the one-for-one swaps.
Utility land trumps basic for the most part. Especially when I only have one other utility land at the moment. This one gets in for synergy with the general, and the ability to use him right away. Also Sun Titan and Mangara of Corander love this card. See Thousand-Year Elixir below.
This was a hard one to think over. Really the clamp should be much better, and is in most cases. But for me, with the lack of 1/1 creatures, and the abundance of anthems here, I see the enchantress getting lots more advantage. That's double when you look at this as something of an enchantment control deck. Neither gets you instant draw in this deck. Even 1/1 tokens aren't usually 1/1 and so can't be clamped for two cards at will. This is one that I'm still back and forth over.
This one was easy. In fact, this was planned from the very start of the deck. The kestrel gets some synergy with bounce as enchantment removal, but the fox is just leagues better. It has so much more utility and really the only purpose of the kestrel when you get right to it is to combo with Petrarch Paladin. At least the kitsune does something on his own.
Originally this deck had a theme of things that cheaply produce lots of guys after Mageta nukes the board. Eventually I drifted away from that idea as I started to realize that it's hard to find the mana in mono-white to mass tokens that way. This really is just to expensive, token-wise to keep around. It doesn't have the power to pump out guys at nearly the rate I would need for this to be effective. I cut Mobilization and really I should have cut this instead then, so it went this time.
Originally this got in solely on being an enchantment. I would never have even considered it if it were an artifact that did the same thing. It isn't that good. At best it's a rattlesnake that can keep off and unshrouded voltron general or the like. It's biggest flaw is the lack of re-usability. I don't recur enchantments that well and as a result this doesn't make the cut anymore.
Turns out that in multiplayer EDH games this card really provides nearly negligible control. There are too many threats coming from too many places for this to get there. The final nail in the coffin was that it only hits creatures, and that means that Magata isn't really friends with it. Why detain when I can destroy instead. I have better spot removal and control.
So this is pretty good in any deck with a general that has an ability that requires tapping. Add onto that the other tap to activate guys in here and you have some pretty good reasons to run this thing. The untap is just gravy really. Funny with Mangara of Corandor though. This really deserved a spot. I think it's better than Hall of the Bandit Lord in any case where attacking is not required.
So an instant in the survival category for this deck that occasionally will get me an extra attacker... This was a good card for this deck. It can be quite a funny surprise when everyone was banking on your board going empty too. Really nice in this deck.
Gotta love that mono-white creature recursion.
Yes. That is what this is in here for. This deck needs it. The control in a snap is nice, but for me this is a mono-white mass recursion spell with a negligible delay. I can kill or bounce it almost at will. It gets back things that I wantonly murder with my commander's ability and there is no drawback. Easily in.
So there are the reasons for those swaps. I would love to hear thoughts on them if anyone has them.
