Wake Thrasher is a 3 mana card that will be at worst a 4/4 on your next turn for 3. If you swung with a few creatures, it'll be a 6/6. If you have, say, 5 lands, a Vial and a creature that attacked, it'll be an 8/8. It's huge for just 3 mana.
Oh, and it'll go infinite or just plain massive with a ton of different cards that are available in modern. With something like Voltaic Key, it could easily be a 10/10 or bigger, assuming you tapped all your lands at their EOT as well.
In any blue deck that uses creatures to win, this guy should definitely be considered.

You like Super Smash Bros.? Melee or Brawl? Check this out! http://projectm.dantarion.com/
It's an updated version of Brawl into an epic, new game.
He's certainly not bad, but can be kind of a win more in Merfolk (and is also a 1/1 at the awkward 3 CMC to boot). I'm not really happy with the fishies in Modern at the moment though, so I might try him in a pure aggro build.
I have no idea about the more combo oriented interactions though, Path to Exile and chump blockers make me wary

While he can get very big, He has no evasion at all, being a vanilla X/X that can be chump blocked easly.
The only deck i see that would welcome him is merfolks, since the lords could give him the evasion he lacks, but merfolks don't really need him, since it already have good beaters.
As a cheap vanilla beater, he's clearly not as good as Tarmogoyf. Obviously Wake Thrasher comes down a turn later and doesn't hit as hard initially, but it might be a decent substitute if you're off color, focusing more on late game, or can't afford to drop a wad of cash on 'Goyfs.
Personally, most of the time I'd prefer to go with Geist of Saint Traft for the same role because he usually hits just as hard on a clear board and is more resilient thanks to hexproof.
Although, if you're in Grixis colors or looking for a casual/budget option...maybe this guy is an ok substitute. Maybe.
Hes rather good just not really in merfolk. 3 drops that can win you the game are never to be overlooked and if you need a cheap blue beater I reckon he could be quite a force.
Can go infinite with Tidewater Minion in modern though that seems slow even if it's only a 2 card combo.
He's very dependent on a board state to do much. That said, I think a 6/6 for 3, which is generally the minimum he will ever be, is actually not half bad. I think people might want to consider him for Fish, cause they generally just have large numbers instead of a beater. I recognize he's expensive for the deck, they play infinite 2-drops, but hey, this could do some real work.
I also think Fish isn't a bad deck, it gets pretty big pretty quickly. Depending on the number of removal it sees, it can do well. There's generally never any Wraths, so the deck goes about playing lords without problem.
Actually you don't need. You can tap it and target itself.
But no matter what, he still a vanilla X/X only on your turn in most cases, that will eat removal(even gut shot can deal with this guy), and can be chump blocked easily.
by the way you don't need to go infinite with it. if you want it as a finisher in a control shell as a budget subsitute to geist of st traft he will be good on its own since you can keep you're mana open during their turn for whatever you need to play and eventually tap out at end of turn to ensure he will get big enough.
Na you will only need 1. He can untap himself. You tap Minion, targeting himself. At this point he is tapped because tapping is the cost and is untap'ed once the effect on the stack resolves.
If you want to go deep play it with Quest for Renewal for... well I don't know but I'm sure you can work something out. Oak Street Innkeeper? Works well with convoke.
