[A huge thanks to zeerbe for making this amazing digital render.]
First of all, I’d like to express my appreciation and gratitude to the other Rasputin Dreamweaver players in the thread, specifically to XeroxedFool, Dracilic and pinguis, who are frankly the reason I posted my list. Your discussions have been very helpful and enjoyable.
Why Rasputin?
In the dark times when this game was young, the color pie wasn’t quite baked yet. Actually, I think it wasn’t even in the oven at all. Effects haven’t been neatly shelved into colors (although some would argue that they’ve all been shelved into the blue shelf), and a card like Rasputin Dreamweaver can exist. In any case, none of the Azorius legends available to date his weird ramping capability—and none probably ever will. However, both colors have so many delicious big spells that can use all that colorless mana. Incidentally, the Azorius colors share the flickering mechanic, which gives Rasputin access to effects that allow him to replenish his dream counters repeatedly—even multiple times over the course of a single turn!
This deck is for you if:
- You enjoy ramping into big spells and effects.
- You like abusing enter the battlefield triggers.
- You look forward to presenting the table with a huge problem very early, and having the means to make sure it’s very difficult to deal with.
This deck may not be for you if:
- You’re a particularly passive player.
- You are used to and depend on the blanket of security that most Azorius decks provide.
Without further ado, here’s my deck:
Strategy Mulligan? Y/N
As a general rule, keep hands that allow you to do something in the first few turns (this is good advice for any deck, actually). If you get something expensive like Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, check if you have mana rocks in your opening draw, because if you can ramp to Rasputin Dreamweaver soon enough, you can drop Ulamog on the next turn, and then you're everyone's problem. Otherwise, maybe think of replacing your hand with something that would hopefully allow you to participate in the early stages of the game.
Deck strats, explanations for card choices, and other stuff like that are to follow, although comments and evaluations are very much welcome!
Gameplay
It’s almost always a good idea to never miss a land drop and to ramp whenever you can, which leads to Rasputin Dreamweaver dropping earlier. Remember that you gain access to 7 immediately if you resolve Rasputin. Whether it’s a big spell like Karn Liberated or more artifact mana, there’s almost always something you can do with the mana Rasputin provides. Keep in mind that he regains a dream counter every upkeep if he starts your turn untapped, but can’t have more than seven so it’s almost always a loss to hold back a full seven counters. Another thing is to wait a turn to cast an even bigger spell with the combined mana from your lands, artifacts, and commander. It’s not uncommon to drop Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre the turn after playing Rasputin.
It’s important to be able to detect what direction your draws are taking you, because the deck can go a lot of ways. You can just play creature after creature, gaining advantage from their ETB triggers, then playing Akroma’s Memorial for an aggro approach. Behind these creatures, you can grow Venser, the Sojourner into his ultimate, then win that way. Or you can draw into Nim Deathmantle and Blasting Station, which creates an infinite damage loop with the commander.
Value Engines
The deck mainly runs on powerful synergies and value engines built from abusing enter the battlefield triggers.
(That is, the following content isn't exactly going to help you build a better deck or teach strategy--it's just fluff. Worse, it's a gibbering fanboy's fluff, so you might spare yourself some eyeball rolling if you skip this part XD)
When I first saw Rasputin Dreamweaver, I thought "Cool, he's like a Protoss Archon."
By that I meant that he has huge attacking power and piddling toughness, but has a massive forcefield that can soak up damage. I would eventually make the deck and as it evolved with many, many games, I realized that Rasputin, while closer individually to the Protoss Archon, /the deck itself/ uses him as a Dark Archon, since the DA uses it's most powerful "spell" at the expense of burning out its shields, just like how you'd 'wring out' your Rasputin of dream counters to cast something spectacular.
hi,
i like rasputin for multiplayer game. the general colors give u acces to good spell to control the board and his ability to ramp and combo are welcome too. here a list of my version.
got combo around nim deathmantle too . but i prefer to use either altar of dementia for the low CC or the 2 card combo stoneforge mystic + Momentary Blink for nim deathmantle and mortarpod.
even if you equip as sorcery, u'll anyway start your combo during your turn and a naturalize can still break the combo with blasting station ( unless u can sack another creature in respond with another sac outlet).
Also you should run vanish into memory. it's a card made for rasputin...
I was considering Mortar Pod when I was adding the Stoneforge package to my deck. It seems like a good sacrifice outlet even without going infinite. It boosts a blocker and can help to kill x/1s. Its not the most high impact card ever made though lol.
@jylichan your list seems to have a high curve. Rasputin decks can afford this, but if you've ever felt slow maybe you could bring it down some. I'm interested in your deck stats when you get time to do them. I run Vanish into Memory and its been amazing so far. Its sort of like having an extra Fact or Fiction.
It’s never felt slow because I run a lot of low cost cards that ensure consistent land drops, and a lot of mana rocks. I also compensate by having very few lands that enter the battlefield tapped. I don’t shy away from using flicker effects on creatures like Knight of the White Orchid and Pilgrim’s Eye, because reusing ETB triggers forever isn’t really the point—it’s reusing the ones that matter most at any given time to get a very early advantage. This is also the reason why it doesn’t run a lot of ‘the usual suspects’: Equilibrium, Crystal Shard, Mistmeadow Witch. These are just too slow, ironically.
Vanish into Memory has actually been hovering around. Just haven’t had the time to think of what to replace it with. It’s also good for flickering a clone creature and copy a smaller creature as it’s coming back to net cards.

I'm amuse by the fact that the we have the same pattern for our thread's name, i.e., "Rasputin, something".
I think your draw engine is a bit too low. I know that your blink engine add value to your creature, however, I don't think it's wise to have this amount of draw engine.

All three have been consistently amazing, and have proven themselves over and over. I think the reason why the deck doesn’t seem to have enough card draw is because the usual approach to Rasputin decks is control. Mine is closer to aggro, with a small web of interlocking combo pieces. I also prioritize clone creatures and effects. Knight-Captain of Eos isn’t really there to provide bodies. He fogs so I can outrun other aggro decks.
Codex Shredder is there because it can be fetched by Trinket Mage (and Tezzeret the Seeker, for 1 loyalty). It can actually recur pretty much anything, but is particularly great with Time Stretch. I don’t really use extra turns to go infinite (although the deck can go infinite turns somewhat accidentally). It’s common to win with a massive White Sun’s Zenith right before my turn, then Time Stretch into enough turns to attack everyone to death, using Codex Shredder for another Time Stretch. Sun Titan shifts this to infinite turns.
The deck is quite different from a lot of the decks I’ve come across because it does away with the sweepers and counters that usually define the Azorius colors. It’s comparatively more active and uses the ETB trigger abuse to drop problems early or to create recursion value engines.
My biggest suggestion is to add a bit more draw. Card advantage is the strongest aspect of a blink deck. Consecrated Sphinx is strong, X draw spells, Rystic Study, Mind's Eye etc etc.
Also, thanks for the compliment and mention. I'll link to yours when i get a chance.

I agree with Pinguis, Coastal Piracy is sick. It's in my list now I just haven't found the time to update it.
I think I've needed Coastal Piracy for a while now. The creature count just went higher and higher because I wanted the deck to have more ETB effects over generic blue staples. It just seemed more fun that way. Coastal Piracy might just replace Eldrazi Monument.
I cut Recurring Insight for Fact or Fiction. So far its been much better, it seems like Recurring is just slow.
It sounds crazy, but Recurring Insight usually draws too many cards too early, in my experience. The deck was built so that it can eke out a good board presence regardless of what you draw. FoF is a good choice, though--even then, my meta is kinda harsh with graveyards. Still, it's better. :B

Just some pulling of cards from my other decks. Finally got a Flooded Strand, too! A more specific change is the removal of Grim Monolith and Mana Vault. While they've never been weak, my current meta has a lot of Blind Obedience, which removes a lot of the early boost they were put in to provide.

Mortarpod might actually be a better choice than Blasting Station, especially if I find space for Stoneforge Mystic and Skullclamp. Thanks! Now I just need to find those cards. e_e The mana costs are also better for fetching with Tezzeret the Seeker.

Are Captain of the Watch, Codex Shredder and White Sun's Zenith worth it? I can see Captain as token provider but I don't think she worth your slot, although, if you insist, I believe Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite is worth your while. The same goes for White Sun's Zenith.
What do you use Codex Shredder for?
I think your draw engine is a bit too low. I know that your blink engine add value to your creature, however, I don't think it's wise to have this amount of draw engine.
