(Journal of Raben Amsel)
37st of Hunter's Moon, Ava. 719
Today was an unusually warm day, especially for Hunter's Moon. With the plainlands still clear and the land still ripe, someone could easily mistake it for the New Moon. As I wandered around the city, looking around to buy supplies, there was a sense of quickening around my province. People were talking about this mysterious attacks over the last few weeks, how supposedly some astray villages were ransacked and ravaged over Innistrad. Those reports were somewhat confirmed by the tide of refugees coming in every few days, and the province jail was packed with former outlaws who came back to the city, fearing for their pitiful lives.
More reports were brought in, with some of the local cathars hearing about a rumor that most of the villages in Nephalia and Kessig have been destroyed, replaced with ruins. More and more of my neighbors were full of worry, as my section of town is filled with peasants from Kessig who were hoping to escape the farming life and numerous kidnappings.
As I hurried up to one of the food stands, I caught sight of my father, Jofridus the Citadel of Avacyn. As I explained the current situation, he gave me some insight. As we ate in one of food benches, he spoke quietly, generally looking unkempt. We haven't spoken for days - I kept trying to get ahold of him, but he always prematurely leaves, citing meetings of the Church. As I rambled on about the rumors and refugees coming in, he listened with acute ears eventually I told him that I was relieved that we got a chance to make conversation, and he smiled. He was listening receptively, about my worries for the past few days, then suddenly he interrupted me with a clear throat and began to speak.
He said that something big was about to happen. Jofridus was unable to tell all of details, but he left with a cryptic message, saying things will get even harsher than they already are. He went on. "Thraben is not safe anymore, war may be coming here."
As I sat there, shocked, a slow pang of dread came over me. So that explained his meetings and unkempt look. It looked like he was relieved when he came over - he must have been arguing relentlessly with the other leaders over what to do about this and talking to me about this may have eased his mind a bit.
It was nearing the end of our chat, and I bid farewell to him, and told him to write me letters so that I did not have to be on the lower end of this trophic scale. Jofridus agreed to do so, as long as I didn't scare the general populace. As I walked down the streets of Thraben, I noticed banners strewn across the city. "I suppose this is the church's way of energizing the conscripts to go to war," I thought. As I made my way to the cathar's building that afternoon, I realized how much happier I was then, not because of the bad news per se but because of my sense of duty, and the trust my father has in me is a motive of pride for me. How I wish to reclaim those memories right now. May Avacyn show me mercy, and I pray for a brighter future once more.

Welcome to [Basic #70] Innistrad Mafia, a game for 12 players.
Each Day will have a deadline of “number of living players X 2”. When said deadline is reached majority threshold will be reduced by one vote, this will repeat itself with each passing day until a lynch or no-lynch has happened. No vote will ever be removed because of the LTR, so when a L-X player is caught by the LTR, he will be lynched like usual lynches.
If a lynch threshold ever reaches 0, everyone loses and the game is over.
If a player ever vote for himself, it will be considered as a majority lynch. Any players voting for them at the time of the self-vote will be credited with participating in that player’s lynch. This rule will be ignored for the first 150 posts, with reasonable exceptions.
All twilights will last for roughly 24 hours.
The town win condition is: "You win when the mafia are dead."
There's no mafia win condition as everyone knows all 12 of you are town.
***
Everyone wakes up to the sound of alarms blazing. In the town square, a corpse of a muscular man lies, brutally murdered. Everyone notices that it's the body of Ged, a mysterious traveler that recently came to live in Thraben. It doesn't take long for the army to gather and decide to start interrogation of the people, the killer certainly is between us, and considering the warm blood he's certainly not far away.
Ged has been killed.
It is now Day One.
With 12 alive, it takes 7 votes to lynch. Day One "deadline" will be 24 days from today. You may now post.
The game is not being dumbed down. Control is doing fine; Draw-Go is not the only kind of control. Aggro is doing fine; Red Deck Wins is not the only kind of aggro. Creature combat is an important core concept and belongs in every color. Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.

Aw hell. Thought there was going to be a PM response telling me when the game started to my confirmation post. Just got prodded, and going to read over all these posts.
My initial thoughts:
Not sure how this prayer thing works. Some of you seem to be accustomed to it already which makes me feel like I am at a distinct advantage. In a game where I were the only one who would have to pray to get an ability I could toy around with it and get comfortable, but since others already seem to have it down I don't have that luxury. So damn.
But yeah, sorry for being late to the party.
This quote is iPot’s first post from [Mini] Deitriptychos Mafia. You will notice that there is no nervousness in this opening post.
Whoa whoa. One joke vote I can understand. Two in a row? Someone's not joking' no more. What's the problem now?
Now we have these two posts from iPot. The first post is full of nervousness. The second post is an overreaction to having two votes on him. One is an obvious RVS vote while mine is not obvious.
Why would iPot need to worry about one vote that was not RVS? The answer is simple. iPot is likely scum this game.
That first post you quoted? I don't even remember that game. Also, it looks like a joke vote. That second post you quoted? I joined the party several pages late. If you go read some more of that game, you'll see that me taking so long to post, as well as other stuff that came up, was the center of quite a bit of drama.
My first post this game? Was just that. A first post. In fact the entire time of the post was meant to imply joking and a light hearted nature. My second post this game was wondering why there were two votes on me so quickly one right after another. Furthermore, any vote on me past the joke one I always take seriously. Especially when no logic is provided in the post.

The vote in first quote post has nothing to do with the information I presented. This is iPot trying to take the nervousness that I mentioned and remove it from the equation.
You joined a game late, but still didn’t show any nervousness in that post. I would think that since you screwed up a little, because you expected a PM when the game started, in that game I would suspect you to be slightly nervous, but you didn’t show that all. It becomes more believable since you mentioned that drama was unfolding in the game when you did arrive.
Your first post this game is chalked full of nervousness. You can claim to be a first post and nothing more if you like, but the way you phrase the post and punctuation marks makes that post read as nervousness.
You got worked up over two votes. One was an obvious RVS vote meaning that you only had one real vote on you. A townie would not worry about one vote being on them.

No, this is iPot trying to figure out what your angle is. See, I'm not entirely sure you are legitimately attempting to press a lynch on me. It's mulled around my head a few times that you're actually trying to gauge reactions of other people in response to our little back and forth.

The problem is that you are inventing this nervousness you are seeing. I'm not a nervous player, and in all honesty am MORE confident when I'm scum(I can link you to the last two games on another site where I was scum. Got MVP both times so...) so whatever you THINK you are seeing is not there, and at best baseless. To be frank, my first post was a tongue-in-cheek shot at me taking forever to do anything in Det mafia. Note the specific pointing out that I had made a post, in the joke phase.

The joke vote I mentioned myself was a joke vote. I was fine with it, if not confused as to where I was calling a kettle black. It was your vote in the very next post that bothered me. No rhyme, no reason, just a vote. As for the "townie would not worry about one vote" if you look at the post I made concerning said vote, you wil also notice a distinctive overall not-that-serious tone in said post. I used a double negative for crying out loud. DOUBLE NEGATIVE!!!
(More joking from me at the end there by the way. In case you try to misrepresent me there as well.)

I am watching for reactions, but your first post screamed that you were scum. I keep reading the post as if you were nervous. I say were because now you are not.
My angel is simple. There should be no reason for someone to sound nervous in their first post of the game unless they have a reason to be nervous. There are only two reasons why someone would be nervous in their post of the game.
First being they a newb and the nervousness would continue throughout his/her posts in a scenario like ours.
Second being that this is the players first time being scum, but realize their mistake and correct it.
Since you have shown us that you have not been nervous in the past in your first posts tells me that you might have something to hide. I'm just digging deeper at this point and watching your behavior.

I am not inventing anything. I am reading your post for what it is. Others may disagree with me on how your post reads.
You could be more confident as scum. That doesn't change the fact that I read your first post as being nervous. I'm happy that achieved two MVP's on another site, but another site is not MTGSalvaation.
Everything that I am thinking is not baseless as you say it is. I read your post as being nervous. I'm going to stop here since I went into depth above.

Every post has it's reason. Since I saw your first post as nervousness I thought that throwing a reasonless vote on you would cause more of a reaction. Your very next post was an overreaction to a blank vote. As far as you knew the vote had no merit so there would be no reason for you react in such a way.
I hate double negatives. Nothing against you, but they are meaningless and often confuse people. The thing is though, even with the double negative, you still overreacted to the vote.
Just because you overreacted in what you are calling a joking matter doesn't change the fact that still overreacted.
You overreacted again at the end of this post about the double negative.
You're misrepresentation comment is nothing more than ad hom.

You may wish to PM DRey re: this, as he won't answer game related questions in thread, I believe.
While true, I don't consider this a real game related question but a formatting related one. The answer: there's no problem if you underline your votes as long as the they are indistinguishable.

I find important to point out that this is Basic #70 and not Basic #21 nor Deitrip in the same sense this is MTGS and not that other forum.
If we are delving into meta arguments, then both side have to be accepted (note: I think neither should).
I only brought up my at elsewhere because he did. Also, after looking through basic 21, you may notice that I grossly overreacted to things in that game, to the point that someone had asked that I take a day as a breather from the game.

Is watching for reactions your primary or secondary goal here? This attack on iPot seems incredibly unfocused, probably because you're trying to make something out of nothing.
If you were just watching for reactions, drop it here, because the gambit's up. But if it wasn't a gambit, then I'm highly suspicious of you saying "I am watching for reactions," which reads like an attempt to legitimize your attack.
This attack on Ipot seems premature, the point you attack him on is a reason to watch him not to have a go at him and let him try to correct the behavior.
Is it over eagerness to appear to be scum hunting or a subtle coach to curb the nervousness?

Smile your day could be worse, so I did smile and it was worse.
Checking in. Hi! See, me? Here I am, posting things. Well, A thing anyway. More things will be posted when there are more things to post.
This doesn't read as scum to me. This reads as "Um, not sure what to post, so I'm posting to let you all know I'll have more to say when there is something to say."
What I have an issue with is how he made a point to say "See, me?" To make it known that he was actively posting. Even when there was nothing. Why is that?
Ipot: Why would you call direct attention to yourself posting, during the RVS, wouldn't just posting suffice? Why did you feel the need to point that out?
With all this being said:
Phoenix Sun Rise: Meta calls that happen 18 posts in make me nervous, why were you so determined to get out of RVS?

Ipot: Why would you call direct attention to yourself posting, during the RVS, wouldn't just posting suffice? Why did you feel the need to point that out?
Its because in Deit Mafia, a game I was in that finished rather recently, I was unaware the game had started because I was unaware of the particular checking-in process of the game. So after everyone had started playing the game, I showed up many many pages late(seven or eight pages, but I have my settings set to show max posts per page so it'd have been more pages for other people).
Me pointing out that I was posting was, as I've stated in a previous post, kind of a tongue-in-cheek inside joke to the other players that were both in that game and are currently in this one. Since we were in RVS, I knew(or assumed rather)that the joke post would be taken for what it was, a joke post, and not horribly disfigured and misrepresented as something it never was.
The two posts immediately after my check-in post were both voting for me, both within an hour of me posting in the first place, and one without any logic or reasoning behind the vote whatsoever. Which is why I responded the way I did. Like I said in my second post, one joke vote is cool. But the second one did not appear to be a joke vote to me.

I appreciate you answering my question, and I'm satisfied with your answer.
Now I wait to hear from Phoenix.
Kosakosa: Would you prefer I changed from blue to the normal black lettering? Or would making the text slightly larger help? I can see it being a pain to read in-game.

@TDP: Reverting it back to normal would be nice of you bro.
While different fonts aren't generally a problem, your font/size bothers me in particular not only because it makes text harder to be read, but also cus that color is exactly the same one I used in MSN for more than 8 years, so that coupled with a similar font makes inconceiveably hard for me to tell myself that I'm not the one writing that lol
Because you quite often see a cat without a grin but hardly ever see a grin without a cat.
If we were still in the RVS I'd declare you absolute and eternal town for this excellent post and vote against The Dark Passenger for daring raise against you. Alas, that time seem to be over too quickly. Also, he repented.
Not touching the meta discussion with a Cathar-regulation holy yard stick.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.

Sorry I'm late everyone, didn't realize this had moved so fast. I have half a mind to vote Phoenix for that ridiculous attempt to attack iPot within the first twenty posts. Seems overly aggressive to me.
Oh, I thought he was talking about playing a spell that is countering a spell with counters on it as it comes into play, but I see you guys were just discussing whether he was flashing a creature with flash in order to flash a flashback or just flashing a creature with flash but not needing flash in order to flashback a spell without flash.
My read on Phoenix somewhere between "overly aggressive scum" and "terrible gambit to end RVS early". Very little else to go on so I'm certainly not on board for lynching him this early in the day.
Basics usually don't include the "you win if you are lynched" type of crazy roles, right? Otherwise I'd suspect Phoenix of actively trying to get himself killed. His behavior is very puzzling.

Nice to see everyone joining up. Currently the most suspicious player for me is Phoenix. Very eager and somewhat aggressive start to the game, playing a gambit and looking for reactions when a good portion of the players hadn't even shown up yet. Waiting to hear the answers from Phoenix before I am willing to place my vote.
@Ipot- How many games have you played on this site?
I thought this was my second, since I'd forgotten all about basic 21 at all until Phoenix brought it up. I was reading basic 21 over, and one of my posts there mentioned another game I was apparently in over here although I have no recollection of it either. So from what I can tell, this would be my fourth game. Keep in mind that basic 21 was in 2010, just around the height of my pot-smokery(which I've not smoked since March of 2011 right before my kid was born).
@Allwin: I believe he answered that in response to something I had said to him in a previous post, when I mentioned that I had mulled over the possibility that he was just trying to get reactions. He said he was also watching reactions, but specifically he wanted to see if my "nervousness" carried over into my posts following the first two.
I'm happy that achieved two MVP's on another site, but another site is not MTGSalvaation.

Comparison is a good tool to use. While meta could be used here I don’t find meta being the defining word here. Meta would require taking more posts than just the first of iPot’s completed games. That’s just an opinion on the matter.
I only brought up my at elsewhere because he did. Also, after looking through basic 21, you may notice that I grossly overreacted to things in that game, to the point that someone had asked that I take a day as a breather from the game.
I didn’t bother to look at the rest of your game since I was only looking for first posts and how they sounded.
The only other thing I noticed from the OP was that you replace out and joboman replaced in for you.
That's really contrived logic (and borderline WIFOM). Nothing is that black-and-white, anyway.
At the time of my posting it was more 50/50. Since others did not have the same read as me I am looking more into the reactions.
iPot’s post is not nothing. There is always a reason behind a post.
You may question the integrity of my reads all you like it doesn’t change anything. This was never intended to be a gambit and is not a gambit.
Since you believe there to be other opinions, then please state them.
Phoenix Sun Rise: Meta calls that happen 18 posts in make me nervous, why were you so determined to get out of RVS?
Please don’t put words in my mouth, sir. I was not determined to get out of RVS. I saw a post that registered as not of townie nature and replied to it.
Sorry I'm late everyone, didn't realize this had moved so fast. I have half a mind to vote Phoenix for that ridiculous attempt to attack iPot within the first twenty posts. Seems overly aggressive to me.
You were willing to barn others to place your vote on your first post of the game. Yet you call me overly aggressive.
Right now I'm incredibly on the fence about voting Phoenix, not only for the awfulness of the voting, but also for the speed of it. The fact that in the next post, Phoenix had this entire argument based off of the meta of a single post in this game seems way to sketchy. I need to see more from Phoenix though first. This seems ridiculously like overeager scum.
@Phoenix- Do you not believe that playstyles can differ from game to game?
I’ve always been an aggressive player. You just don’t know for reasons.
Of course playstyles can, and more likely, will change from game to game. That doesn’t mean that a change in playstyle should be ignored. It’s a behavioral change.
First, I am a gimmick. I don’t mind players knowing it. Don’t bother asking who I am.
Second, 20+ games varying across different sites.
I’m still seeing an issue with iPot’s first post. Even if no one else is reading iPot’s post as nervousness it’s still a behavioral difference from his normal posting.
(I hate this nesting quote BS when trying to configure a post.)
I never said that iPot as the lynch for the toDay.
I'm having difficulty reconciling these statements. You can argue your way out of that with semantics, but there's a passive-aggressiveness there that's just plain anti-town. Why would you not want to lynch iPot if he's likely scum?
As i said before, either this is a failed gambit or a weak scum tell. I'm not sold that you're scum, but it certainly feels anti-town in some way. You claim it's not a gambit and that from this one post you can tell he is likely scum.
I haven't meta'd anyone in this game, but my understanding is that you've played several games of mafia before, so i have to wonder. Why would you make this move, knowing full well everyone would see it as you jumping on nothing? Is the real point of this gambit to draw the attention all to yourself? It certainly seems to have worked, if that's your goal.
Please don’t put words in my mouth, sir. I was not determined to get out of RVS. I saw a post that registered as not of townie nature and replied to it.
Well then what would you call it, because 18 posts in, and according to you ipot is likely scum and the RVS is over.
Now you're back tracking, and telling me to not put words in your mouth, when your wording and phrasing has already been inconsistent.. So, because of that, I now pose you this question;
What about ipots post, aside from a meta call, made you think he is likely scum? And, if he is likely scum, and you are so sure, why wouldn't you advocate him for the lynch today?

I'm also going to vote Phoenix Sun Rise. While I can sort of see the point of being "aggressive" just to get the game moving along, your talk of "playstyle" just serves to undermine your point. No reasonable town would go about aggressively scumhunting someone to the point of meta-ing them from years ago this early in the thread.
Oh, I thought he was talking about playing a spell that is countering a spell with counters on it as it comes into play, but I see you guys were just discussing whether he was flashing a creature with flash in order to flash a flashback or just flashing a creature with flash but not needing flash in order to flashback a spell without flash.

Reviewer: Ged and Ecophagy
Rules are here
Each Day will have a deadline of “number of living players X 2”.
Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.

MirrorEntity, if you have any honor left as a Crazy 88 you know we have to do this.
Uhm, what?
Because now I'm curious as to what kind of thing it is. And why is it the most curious.
A grin without a cat.
Because you quite often see a cat without a grin but hardly ever see a grin without a cat.
Well, my head hurts now.
@Mods: I am already typing in bold lettering. Would you mind if I underlined my votes instead. If not, then I will remove the bold from my CP setup.
Vote iPot for calling the kettle black...
This quote is iPot’s first post from Basic #21. You will notice that there is no nervousness in this opening post.
This quote is iPot’s first post from [Mini] Deitriptychos Mafia. You will notice that there is no nervousness in this opening post.
iPot was town in both of these games.
Vote Truk for mudslinging The Dark Passenger. He's not scum nor town bro. He's the Serial Killer
Super bandwagon-y with the no-explanation voting, hmmmmm?
Unvote TDP
A joke post can still be a nervous post.
I don't like meta arguments in general because they are poor, and while I still don't know what to think of this interation, I find important to point out that this isn't
I find important to point out that this is Basic #70 and not Basic #21 nor Deitrip in the same sense this is MTGS and not that other forum.
If we are delving into meta arguments, then both side have to be accepted (note: I think neither should).
Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.
I only brought up my at elsewhere because he did. Also, after looking through basic 21, you may notice that I grossly overreacted to things in that game, to the point that someone had asked that I take a day as a breather from the game.
Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with this post.
Or this one.
That's really contrived logic (and borderline WIFOM). Nothing is that black-and-white, anyway.
Is it over eagerness to appear to be scum hunting or a subtle coach to curb the nervousness?

Love the Cheshire Cat reference.
Where are those damn late checkers? I can't even blame them because I did it once myself, but damn...
I enjoy RVS. Makes me sad to come to the game and see it finished before I could even jump in
If we were still in the RVS I'd declare you absolute and eternal town for this excellent post and vote against The Dark Passenger for daring raise against you. Alas, that time seem to be over too quickly. Also, he repented.
Not touching the meta discussion with a Cathar-regulation holy yard stick.
Like this guy?

How much mafia have you played before, Phoenix? And I still want the question in my last post answered.
Also Unvote iPot
You have a good point there mirror. For clarity...
@Phoenix-was your efforts some attempt at a gambit or was it a serious case?
Not sure what to tell you there big guy. I read iPot's post as nervousness. As I mentioned others may not see iPot's post as being nervous.
I never said that iPot as the lynch for the toDay.
I don't like meta arguments in general because they are poor, and while I still don't know what to think of this interation, I find important to point out that this isn't
Comparison is a good tool to use. While meta could be used here I don’t find meta being the defining word here. Meta would require taking more posts than just the first of iPot’s completed games. That’s just an opinion on the matter.
I’ll give you the fact that 51 games do make a difference.
I didn’t bother to look at the rest of your game since I was only looking for first posts and how they sounded.
The only other thing I noticed from the OP was that you replace out and joboman replaced in for you.
Please don’t put words in my mouth, sir. I was not determined to get out of RVS. I saw a post that registered as not of townie nature and replied to it.
You were willing to barn others to place your vote on your first post of the game. Yet you call me overly aggressive.
I'm having difficulty reconciling these statements. You can argue your way out of that with semantics, but there's a passive-aggressiveness there that's just plain anti-town. Why would you not want to lynch iPot if he's likely scum?
Vote Phoenix Sun Rise
I haven't meta'd anyone in this game, but my understanding is that you've played several games of mafia before, so i have to wonder. Why would you make this move, knowing full well everyone would see it as you jumping on nothing? Is the real point of this gambit to draw the attention all to yourself? It certainly seems to have worked, if that's your goal.
vote Phoenix Sun Rise
Well then what would you call it, because 18 posts in, and according to you ipot is likely scum and the RVS is over.
Now you're back tracking, and telling me to not put words in your mouth, when your wording and phrasing has already been inconsistent.. So, because of that, I now pose you this question;
What about ipots post, aside from a meta call, made you think he is likely scum? And, if he is likely scum, and you are so sure, why wouldn't you advocate him for the lynch today?
I type too fast for my keyboard, it seems.
