Seriously love the art for this set, especially the Simic. For some reason I think the merfolk art might be a non-creature spell, not sure why, just think it is. Regardless of what it is, I hope it's a card worth playing 4 of in a deck

The coolest arts are always on the crappiest cards (I'm looking at you, Windwright Mage!). I think the chances are high that the merfolk on the poster is a functional reprint of Slippery Bogle, lol

Haha, somewhat true - I still haven't forgiven wizards for Lionheart Maverick. Still always good to be optimistic and hope it's closer to Mystic Snake than our Bogley friend.

Slipery Bogle is by no means a terrible card, it's just not that good either. It needs other cards to play around it, and is only really useful as a cheap means to activate colour dependent cards like Momir Vig. I really want this merfolk art to be on a brilliant card, like Mystic Snake (one of the best UG cards ever printed) as opposed to an average card like the Bogle (no offense to the little guy).
Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
Unless they have alternate art Guildmagi as a (pre)release bonus.
That's very unlikely, as of the two simic-guildmage-style pictures we have here, one is clearly a merfolk, and the other one is much more likely to be a vedalken or something. You can't do the alternate art thing with different creature types.

and the promos are always Rare (or Mythic, for a while).

I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.

About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
He's saying one picture is obviously a Merfolk,
while the other looks more Elven/Vedalken.
For the sake of simplifying the explanation, let's say that picture *is* an Elf.
What the poster is saying is that one can't really be considered an alt-art of the other if the races depicted are completely different.

Ah, alternate arts of each other. That was not clear.

Then again, with the Simic involved...
Since I was clearly replying to a post regarding alternate art of guildmagi, I would have thought that was clear. Is there any other situation you would speak of "alternate art" unless it's for the same card? Wouldn't be much of alternate art then, right?
If it's simic or not does not matter at all, WotC will not print the same card with the same name but not the same creature type.
And whoever said they both look like merfolk should compare them again and notice that there are such significant differences in their respective anatomy, that it's basically impossible for them to have the same creature type.
A Simic merfolk, a Boros soldier, a Dimir assassin, and Trostani.
Hopefully we get pictures of the Gruul and Orzhov posters.
That merfolk looks rather different from Zegana,
and gives a sliver of hope for Kiora,
but I daren't get my hopes up
That Dimir dude was shown somewhere else, but I don't quite remember where?

It's all cool with me... just no negative numbers.
(hint: we've seen the the Guildmagi, and these are not the wizards you're looking for )

Hey! Don't knock Slippery Bogle!
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary *loves* those Bogles!
They're also a pretty solid one-drop.
A better example IMO is Deadly Allure.
And yeah, Lionheart Maverick is pretty goddamned awful... never even saw it before just now.

Well, the Dimir art is already in the compilation of known info thread. Don't remember where that art came from though
