Rules of Engagement: -
The following rules and regulation applies throughout the tournament: -
1. Unless otherwise noted, the ordinary rules of duelcommander.com applies.
2. This tournament would use the French Ban List finalised about 28 January 2013. Cards from Gatecrash will be legal for this tournament.
Banlist used for this tournament:
The following cards are BANNED for this tournament: -
Ante cards and manual dexterity cards are also banned.
2. This is a 1v1 tournament where each players will begin with 30 life. Matches are played "first to two" (i.e. the first player to win two games wins the match).
3. Matches will be played via Cockatrice. However, both players may opt to play on a different interface (as if I can stop you from doing otherwise) which may include MWS, meeting up in real life, video conferencing, etc. However, where there are any disagreements, the match should be played on Cockatrice.
4. The Partial Paris Mulligan will be used. The optional sideboard rule would NOT be used (i.e.: No sideboards (or "wishboards")).
Partial Paris Mulligan:
EDH uses a modified mulligan rule designed to aleviate mana-light hands without significantly increasing the odds of finding individual cards. This is also known as the "Brittany" mulligan rule.
a. In turn order, players may exile (face down) some or all of the cards in their hand.
b. Each player then draws one less card from their deck than the number they exiled.
c. Players who exiled at least one card may return to step 1 and repeat the process, drawing one less card each time.
d. Players shuffle all exiled cards into their deck.
5. Also, the legends rule doesn’t apply to commanders as long as both creatures with the same name on the battlefield are commanders. If a creature with the same name is on the battlefield but is not a commander (either because it is played as a “normal” creature or because of a card like Clone), the legend rule applies and all those creatures are put into their owners’ graveyards as the result of a state-based effect.
6. Finally, in addition to the ability to put the Commander back into the Command Zone if it would go to the graveyard or be exiled, you may do so also if it would be put into your library.
7. This tournament will begin with Swiss Rounds as appropriate for the number of players in this competition. This will be decided by the Magic Tournament Rules (MTR).
8. Only legal users of the MTGS forum may participate. If at any one point a participant is suspended or banned from the site, that participant will be automatically disqualified. They are free to appeal the moderator's decision though, as per the site policies.
9. Upon the commencement of the tournament, the TO shall reveal the Commanders for each players. These Commanders are not necessarily unique.
10. Players are expected to have a social agreement on rules enforcement akin to FNM. However, if there are any serious disputes, the REL will be treated as Competitive. This is because the JAR is nigh impossible to apply in these sort of tournaments as it requires for a match official to be there, so to speak. That said, apply the Competitive REL only as a last resort.
Responsibilities of the Tournament Organiser ("TO")
The TO will post the next pairings within 36 hours from the receipt of results.
The TO will exercise reasonable care in exercising the administrative duties of the tournament.
The TO will not demonstrate any bias or undermine the integrity of the tournament through fraud, favourtism, etc.
The TO will not reveal ANY decklists submitted prior to the cut to Top 8.
The TO will give no less than a week and a day to each players to complete their matchups.
Notwithstanding all other rules in this thread, the TO will comply with any reasonable requests from the MTGS Staff in their administration of the forum.
Responsibilities of the Players
While the TO will look through the decklist submitted, it is the individual player's responsibility to ensure that their decklist is legal. Players are expected to drop out of the tournament if, at any point of the tournament, their decklist is not legal. Failure to do so may result in disqualification (which effectively a subtle way of saying that you should resign or be fired).
Both players are expected to update the TO on any extraordinary status of their matches (e.g. if they are unable to complete their matches, if the other player would not respond, etc.). Failure to do so may result in match arbitration.
Both players are expected to complete their match on time. While the results will only be confirmed if the losing player should report the result, both players are responsible for updating the TO on the results. Failure to do so may result in match arbitration.so may result in match arbitration.
Players are expected to check the tournament thread for the current round frequently for any updates. This is especially important if their deadline is looming.
Notwithstanding all other rules in this thread, the player will comply with any reasonable requests from the MTGS Staff in their administration of the forum. Failure to do so may result in the said MTGS Staff from exercising their wrath.
Other matters: -
The TO may make rulings in the event of incomplete matchups or any extraordinary circumstances which may pop up over the course of this tournament. These rulings may modify the rules of the tournament. This may include the disqualification of decklists. On that note, non-serious decklists (i.e. stuff like one general and 99 basic lands or its variants) will be disqualified though there may be exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Such decklists only serve to waste the time of all other participants.
The TO may send reminder PM to users with regards to the administration of the Tournament. Expect to receive no more than one reminder every 24 hours.
This is obvious but upon majority agreement, players may opt to dismiss the TO. In that event, the outgoing TO will turn over all decklists and administrative logs to a MTGS staff for safekeeping. Uhh.... You won't conspire to dismiss me, right?
SIGNUP PROCEDURES
To register, you are required to: -
Post the following in this thread: -
Cockatrice User Name.
Cockatrice Deck Code. Do NOT post your General in this thread unless you really want to. I will reveal the General simultaneously at the beginning of Round 1
Your Time Zone (in GMT). Feel free to use Wikipedia if you unsure which timezone you are located at.
PM me your entire deck list. Try to ensure that all the cards are accurately reflected. This deck list will be kept confidential until the cut to Top 8. Do indicate which is your Commander / General. Do NOT post your decklist in this thread (unless you really want to).
Failure to go through both steps may void your registration. That's about it. As an option, you may choose to submit your MWS deck code IN ADDITION to the Cockatrice deck security code in case you want the option to negotiate to have the match played on MWS. It is highly recommended that you either PM or save a copy of the game log after every match (if possible).
You are free to edit your security code as much as wish before the tournament begins. The instant signups close though, that deck code is set in stone. If you do edit your deck security code, remember to PM me your new deck list and make a new post in this thread restating your deck security code and time zone.
Try not to over-edit your deck though as this may create some administrative pressure on my side It would help if you only start registering after you are somewhat sure of your decklist.
To maintain objectivity, I will not be participating (not that I would participate if I wasn't organising this). Feel free to ask if you have any further questions.
I will be accepting registration as of this moment and this will continue until 5th February 2013, 4 p.m. (GMT +0) or until there are at least 30 players registered, whichever comes last.
Communication has always been an issue for players in online tournaments like this. By telling everyone else what time zone you’re in, this will help somewhat for everyone what the best time to contact you would be. On that note, it is highly recommended that you use IM clients to get in contact with your opponent in order to make life easier for you, me, and everyone else.
Your friendly tournament administrator currently resides in the timezone GMT +8. However, for the sake of simplicity, unless otherwise stated, time will be given as GMT +0.
I have received a PM saying that there are some interest for a Cockatrice 1v1 EDH tournament on this boards and as such, I am volunteering to host it.
As some may recall -- and for the benefit of others may not have heard of it at all -- I have volunteered for two such tournaments (logs of which can be found here and here) -- during the release of MBS and M12. As such, in all likelihood, prospective participants can expect the tournament to be run the same way with a few exceptions including: -
The French Ban List will be used.
In accordance to the French rules, the option to send your commander to the command zone will be applicable to any effects that send the commander from anywhere to the library, graveyard and exile zone. (TLDR: French tuck rule applies)
As such, I would like a quick show of hands vote from prospective participants on the following questions: -
Who will be interested in participating?
Do you want Gatecrash to be legal for this tournament?
Do you have any other concerns on how things were run previously? If yes, do elaborate on how this could be improved.
[NEW!] How should we treat the January changes to the ban list (if any)?
Prospective participants should scan through the OP here to get an idea of what to expect of the tournament administration.

1. Yes, oh hell yes I'm in, this gets me prepped for french in any way, I'm in.
2. No, Rather wait till GTC is fully spoiled and released.
3. Can we submit decks via PM?
2. No, Rather wait till GTC is fully spoiled and released.
By "no", do you mean "yes, you are fine with GTC being legal for the tournament as soon as it is fully spoiled"? Strictly speaking, in EDH, a card is "released' as soon as the card is available publically (e.g.: prerelease, being one of the means)
Actually, that is the almost the only way that you can submit decklists (I don't favour giving out my email). I will collect those decklists and keep them confidential until the cut to top 8.
That said, once the tournament begins, I have no powers to prevent spectators from viewing your matches (you do) nor do I have any powers to prevent your opponents from revealing cards that he/she saw during his match with you.
On a related note, do anybody have any opinion on how to treat a January ban list update (if any)?
My thoughts are that depending on the amount of changes, we ignore that ban list update as it may be difficult for players to change their deck and/or adapt their strategies as short notice but again, I would like to hear everybody's feedback on this.
I'd love to play. As for Gatecrash, if all of the cards are available in Cockatrice, sounds good. I don't want to be ALT-TABbing back and forth to the spoiler, or trying to read someone's token they made, all game.
With about 11 prospective participants currently expressing their interest in this and probably just one actual dissenting voice against Gatecrash being legal, lets tentatively set registration up at 26 January 2013 to 5 February 2013. That should give players enough time to prepare their decklists (and send me 10 different last minute changes ), obtain the GTC Cockatrice patch and have some preliminary testing here and there.
Again, I would like to have more opinion on how the end of January ban list (if any) should be treated in this tournament in view that it is pretty close to the tournament.
On a final note, while I am tempted to bump this thread every now and then to prove that I am still alive, that seems a tad pointless given that this thread has been helpfully stickied on the top. However, do rest assured that I do check this thread several times daily even though my participation in the other parts of the forum may appear to be minimal so please do not hesitate to post any concerns, suggestions or questions in this thread (or via PM if you really, really need to keep the question private).
Again, I would like to have more opinion on how the end of January ban list (if any) should be treated in this tournament in view that it is pretty close to the tournament.
In your opinion, should the changes in the January Ban List be used in this tournament?
In your opinion, should the changes in the January Ban List be used in this tournament?
Unless it's something that impacts french, I'd probably say no, but we are still better off waiting for the full ban list announcement, both french and casual sides.
Is there any way that all the game replays can be uploaded and posted here. It would serve two purposes, make sure no cheating or misplays occur and provide people like me with entertainment. I would definitely watch a lot of the games. Especially the finals.

If you had a way of recording the games, then yeah you can always post em on Youtube or something.
Cockatrice automatically saves replays. Guys, when you finish one of your games, go to the replay section, select the one with the game name you just played, and click the big blue/green "<-" button. That will save yo a copy of your game replay.

I'm interested, but it depends on when. Between school, a full time job, a kid, and a busy social life I don't get a huge amount of time to sit and play long games. I could play on days I work from home, but my attention wouldn't be 100 percent on the game.

QFT. I suck, but I am keen. Can't promise to make it, but keen.
2. No, Rather wait till GTC is fully spoiled and released.
3. Can we submit decks via PM?

2. I don't mind.
3. Nope.

Should make love fun.
I agree, the ban list change should be noted for this tournament.
Also, i normally do not get the next set patch till it is made public, so I'm going to be one of the rare ones not using GTC for this one.

I know: -
In your opinion, should the changes in the January Ban List be used in this tournament?
Unless it's something that impacts french, I'd probably say no, but we are still better off waiting for the full ban list announcement, both french and casual sides.
