Oooohhhh man, ever since they reprinted Stuffy Doll, I wanted to make another constructed deck with him. But with a modern GP looming in my area, I had to go back to the deck that I knew and loved. (a little...MODERNized, if you will =P)
This deck will mainly focus on getting out multiple, or even just 1, Stuffy Doll, or Stuffy Doll type creature, while maintaining control of the board. With Reckoner, that brings the total to 12, and they even curve out perfectly.
Let me say that although I have high hopes, I haven't been paying a lot of attention to the Modern scene, and really don't know if this deck will be able to do any good. This is also the reason I am posting this in hopes for some help with the sideboard and parts of the main deck.
I really like this deck a lot. Seems a little slow, Stuffy Doll and Spitemare can't come out until mid game. You don't even have enough lands where you will be hitting one every turn. Concept is very clever though, red is my least favorite color in Magic and this is a deck I could see myself playing.
Goblin Guide feels out of place, I'd put something more defense in that slot. Aether Membrane?
I've really been wanting to bring this deck back from the good ol days as well. Most likely as a RW version if I do try it, possibly using swans of bryn argoll.
Another card that I'd love to see fit into this deck would be Pyrohemia, but it's most likely too slow for modern. It would totally hose certain decks though, with repeatable boardwipes for small creatures.
I was trying to think a lot about splashing...but I don't think it's for me. I feel like the mainboard is already really tight without worrying about splash cards. Back in the day, I splashed white, but it never really did a lot for me.
I always ran 23 lands with this deck and never had a problem...curve ends at 5 and that's just the 4 Stuffy Dolls..with the Coldsteel Hearts and Scrying Sheets, it's never really a problem.
The goblin guides are mainly there as a strong 1 drop to put early pressure on slower decks, getting 4-6 dmg in for 1 mana is hotness. Since this is a quasi burn deck (or a....Midrange burn/creature control something...), It just made sense to me. Outside of something like Martyr of Ashes or Mogg Fanatic, I can't really think of a better 1 drop.
And before anyone asks, I don't like Sulfurous Blast or Pyroclasm over Volcanic Fallout for a few reasons. One being that I don't want to flat out lose to heavy counter decks game 1. I also like it over Sulf blast because it doesn't kill Spitemare or Reckoner.
I also forgot to mention that another great thing about the deck is that outside of the Reckoners...It's really cheap to make. =P
