Lately I've been really enjoying my black section but feeling like it could use just a little more disruption. When I was describing to my fiancee what I was looking for, I ended up deciding I either wanted a Mind Rot that cost 2 instead of 3, or just a functional Duress reprint. The reason for the Duress reprint over something like Despise was that I really wanted to be able to hit wraths.
It occurred to me that there is a 1CMC discard spell that already exists, that hits Wraths, that I don't play. Has anyone played or considered this? Does it do enough? I like that you don't really need to play it on turn 1, and that it's a good turn 3 play to go with a 2 drop, I just don't know if it's going to whiff too often. On the other hand, if it whiffs, it might be like a Cabal Therapy naming Force of Will: you don't care if it makes them discard a card or not, you just want to make sure they don't have a specific card. This might do that against wraths.
I'm not sold on it but I'm interested in opinions.
I think it misses a good majority of the cards I really want to hit with my Duress variants. It hits a decent amount of good cards, and as you say, it's a better topdeck than the others because even if you're casting this on T3-4 it can still peel a Titan from their hand or something, but it doesn't disrupt their early game, and it doesn't remove a good deal of the cards that are the hardest to deal with. Plus, I can't reanimate the card I force them to bin, which is a bummer when I'm picking big cards out of their hand.
If your cube would be better with two copies of Duress, I would run two copies of Duress.
In my cube i'm being cheap. I don't even have Inquistion of Kozilek because it's now worth like $7. I run Duress and Ostracize in the 1 slot section of my cube. I would rather be running Despise than Ostracise because at least that can also target planeswalkers in addition to creatures. In type 2 Appetite for Brains is good since there are many people who play midrange or control decks. If you are cubing you are only making a 40 card deck instead of 60 card deck. You are probably going to have fewer targets to hit. The percentage of high drops is also going to be lower making Appetite for Brains less useful. Thougtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Despise, Duress and Ostracize can all hit more targets than Appetite for Brains.
Mod question: maybe the multiple in cube debate can be moved either to a seperate thread or to one of Trunkers threats?
On topic: This card is way too narrow unless you run a dragon cube. This cards whiffs to often, and not only against aggro. Not every deck is full of high cc cards.

While I don't disagree with this statement, the question is "If this card whiffs, are you still happy?" I think I made the comparison early to casting Cabal Therapy naming Force of Will. You don't care if it hits anything because you're not dead set on staying 1for1 equal on card advantage. You care about card quality. And my question is, if this card whiffs, how often does that necessarily mean good things for you?
I don't know the answer, or what I think the answer is, but I think if I'm playing a grindy attrition deck, most of what I'm afraid of costs 4 or more, and if you don't have anything like that for me to take, then I'm probably in a good position anyway and I'm OK with blanking.
Like I said, I don't know if that argument holds any water, but I'm just trying to look at the card in a different way than you look at most 1CMC discard spells.
I like inquisition of kozilek because it stops all the broken early stuff. I usually don't need my targeted discard spells to hit big stuff that often. It's hitting cards like the swords, recurring nightmare, bitterblossom etc that makes discard spells clutch. I'd have to have a dragon cube for this card to shine.

I agree that Inquisition is better, but it's certainly not uncommon for me to be trying to find a discard spell to take away their wrath before they get to 4 mana.

Probably true, and since I can't fathom playing Distress . . . . . I think Wrench Mind is probably just better than distress.
