What in Magic caught your attention?

Why do you play Magic?
Why do you keep playing?
One fine day, back in 1994, my dad came home from his weekly trip to the comic shop, with a pair of the old starter decks in hand. Tells me the guys at the shop told him that I'd probably enjoy it, so we opened up the decks, read the rulebook, and had a game. I'll never forget looking through the deck and checking out all the sweet art. Demonic Tutor, Rock Hydra, and Gaea's Liege all seemed so awesome to me! I was pretty much instantly hooked, and got all my friends to start playing.
I started playing Magic briefly in High School. I had a girl that liked me give me a deck to play with her. I didn't buy cards or anything, just played with that one deck for fun sometimes, kind of like a board game. That kind of negates the "What caught your attention" question, since it was a gift.
A few years later in my 20's, my roommate and I were avid D&D players. We mentioned Magic from time to time, but never did anything about it. Then he found 3 or 4 longboxes of mixed cards in the basement of our place that a friend of his gave him. We dug out a old rule book, and threw some decks together, playing with things like Mana Burn, even though it had been long-since removed from the game.
We then got a deckbuilders tool-kit each, and found the modern game rules inside.
As to why I play and keep playing, I just enjoy collecting, and being able to play with my collection makes it all the more fun.

Started playing at summer camp, 15 years ago. Everyone there played it, and it didn't take me long to get hooked. All the card games that have come since then have been jokes in my opinion. I'm not sure how anyone could like yugioh if they played magic first.
I saw a few of my classmates in elementary school playing it. Saw a 4th Edition Gift Box (2 decks) at Toys R Us and begged my mom to get it for me. This was around '95-'96. Stopped playing when I graduated high school in 2003. Just just before the M13 Prerelease.
What caught my attention/why did I start playing: My cousins and sister were playing the game and wanted to join. They were having fun, so I wanted to see what was up.
I play magic because its fun when I have my friends all together playing.
I don't know why I keep playing. I'm an on and off player. More off than on these days. I read about it more often than i'm playing it.

1. Loved the interaction between cards. It has more flavor then chess.
2. My oldest son wanted a box of Worldwake for his birthday. I asked my brother to help build him a deck and as I was watching them play I wanted to learn too.
3. Hang out with family since I got my brother playing again. My brother in law and nephew also play.
4. Pretty much 3. Just to hang out with family...
I used to play the pokemon tcg back in middle school and my friend who played magic made me try it. He said since I like strategy games I would like magic more and I did. Been playing nonstop since. That was back when fifth dawn had just come out. I keep playing because I like the cool cards and interesting interactions that occur in the game. I mostly follow modern now though.
I was 10 and the cool kids were playing Magic at the cafeteria but a few of them did not speak English so they enlisted my help to to translate some of the stuff (the look on one guy's face when I explained to him what was written on Demonic Tutor was epic).
Eventually I got into the game but stopped soon after because I got into Warhammer the following year (Ice Age had just been released)
Moved back to Canada and while most of my friends used to play they had all stopped but that changed once M12 was released: the one guy in our group that still played semi-regularly got me to pitch-in on half a booster box of M12 which brought me back and then I managed to bring everybody else in the group back.
Around 1998-1999, my cousin introduced me to a 'card game' he played with his friends. Low and behold, twas Magic the Gathering. I picked it up pretty quick and shortly after received a Starter 1999 pack for my birthday. I remember picking up some Prophecy boosters and adding the Avatar of Will I opened to my then 80+ card deck haha.
I played the Pokemon trading card game prior to Magic, but sold off all of my cards before the decline in popularity in my area. I was quickly drawn to Magic because of the elements of strategy in the game itself. I continue to play to this day because it is still challenging, and to be honest, a lot of fun. I now work for a Hobby Store in Kitchener which allows me to talk about/research/buy/sell/deck-test Magic all day, everyday.
Freshman year, people were handing out decks. I'd heard about Magic all my life, but never bothered to try it until I got a deck for free. Insta-addiction. Switched from Yu-gi-oh, because MTG was more consistent and robust. I play for fun, and flavor. I keep playing because I love how things interact and how it's so social.
I found a few of my classmates playing the game when I was in 8th grade (around 2003 or 2004) and I decided to try it too. I bought a few packs and 8th edition starter decks that my brother and I used to play against each other. Then I met more players in high school and quickly expanded my interest in the game and never looked back!
I too played Pokemon and some Yu-Gi-Oh before Magic but I can safely say that Magic trumps those other two games

My eighth grade math teacher introduced me. I ran out and bought one of the latest theme decks, Darksteel's Mind Swarm. She trounced me with her Sliver deck every time we played.

- Started playing in mid-late 90's. Always loved fantasy novels, Dragonlance in particular. Friend got me involved.
- I play because I enjoy the fantasy genre, I love board games/card games and I love the friends/family that I still get to enjoy the game with.
Nostalgia, competition, friends, family, and fun. What more can I ask for?

Originally, back in 5th grade (01-02, 7th edition/Odyssey) some of my friends were playing MtG on the playground. I asked my mom to get me a starter deck, and I played that deck for that school year and stopped playing after that.
This past summer/early fall, I found out that a bunch of my friends played. I bought the Burning Vengeance event deck to play with them. It started out as a fun nostalgia thing, but now I've really gotten into standard and don't regret a thing.

My dad introduced me to it and gave me a bunch of cards (this was in '06), and went to an FNM the following Friday with a friend, made a deck from what I had, and traded with some of the shop regulars.
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.
I bought a starter edition 2000 (I think) for a friend's birthday and he kept one deck while I got the other. After that I kept going to the local store and buying all the older boosters I could get my hands on while they were still in stock.

but seriously:
The ability to resolve an Omniscience then topdeck lands for the next 8 turns.
I wanted to be cool in high school.
I would never cheat on something I loved.
It makes me feel real good.
Addiction.
I only play magic because it has the most players and also I don't want to learn more rules.
I usually stop when there's no stores near me. I pick up the game again if there is.
