I counted 78 good targets for it in my cube, with incidental value against 25 other cards (spectral, battlesphere, etc). This is not also counting its use with getting the last point on a creature or planeswalker when you're tapped out. I'm interested to hear what the rest of you guys have to say about this one.
What deck is honestly going to want this and what would you be willing to cut for it? Its worse than every other burn spell even if you can play it for "free". This doesnt shore up a weakness like Mental Misstep does. Theres much better spells that can deal with X/1 creatures.
I do not run Gut Shot but it's a colorless spell that hits a big number of creatures for free, but is probably sideboard material at best.
Edit: Quick count gives 71/450 gut shot targets. That's a bit more than I expected. I will have to take note what it is an average deck.
I'm currently running Mutagenic Growth out of all the options (the whole list of cubeables: Gut Shot, Mental Misstep, Noxious Revival, Mutagenic Growth, Gitaxian Probe). Mental Misstep would go in my on-deck binder and be eventually added once wizards prints a few more Lightning Bolts or Goblin Guides.
So if this is categorized as a colorless spell is it actually better than Desert? I know the creature does the damage to you but its a land and a repeatable source of dealing with X/1 creatures. I personally cant think of deck that would want Gutshot unless the draft went wonky and you were short of playables. However, I can see our control decks make great use out of Desert.
Desert can't kill mana dudes or other utility creatures. I still don't think the effect is worth a card, but I could be wrong given the enthusiasm in some quarters for Mental Misstep and Burning-Tree Emissary.

I like Mutagenic Growth better, but I don't run that. Mutagenic Growth is better as combat trick/"burn" spell, while of course lose being target removal spell.
I don't really like this card, even though it hits some relevant targets a lot of the time you don't want to take the two damage and lose a card just to deal with a random Savannah Lions only. The difference between this and say Mental Misstep is that Misstep can hit not only that Savannah Lions but also a Goblin Guide, Kird Ape, Wild Nacatl, or Deathrite Shaman which is huge. Though more importantly it can counter a burn spell like Lightning Bolt or even a high power removal spell like Swords to Plowshares and in certain cubes it can stop a crucial Reanimate or Ancestral Recall, so yea, the two cards are worlds apart.
As for other "free" Phyrexian cards, I don't run Noxious Revival or Mutagenic Growth, but I do run Gitaxian Probe, and I think it's an awesome card. It's a card that lets you cut down on lands in aggro and has some cool combinations with Guttersnipe and Deathrite Shaman. More importantly though it tells you exactly how to play around your opponent's hand, which is pretty useful.
I'm wondering if Gut Shot is slightly better in 2022 than a card like Desperate Ritual as an enabler for storm/ spells matters.

True, but most people have banned Camel from their cube for power level reasons.

Well yea, after Desert Nomads winter they had to make sure to ban other such cards.
