Like the title says. This is chalk full of win! They even painted the house in bright rainbow colors in the gay-pride fashion. It will be interesting to see how the Westboro wackos react to this one.
The Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., might have finally met its match.
The church, which is known for its extreme ideologies and anti-gay views, now has a neighbor swathed in the rainbow colors of the gay pride flag.
Non-profit Planting Peace bought a house across from the church – notorious for its "God hates ****" and "God hates America" slogans – and decided to turn it into a gay rights center, according to Gawker.com.
A million and one props to Planting Peace. This is the ideal way of protesting/marginalizing their hate, and I can't express my support for this enough! Best of luck to them
It's so nice to have one's faith in humanity vindicated like this on occasion!

Not that I oppose what they did necessarily, but how in the world did they get zoning permission to do it? I have a hell of a time just trying to get permission to build a fence so my two year old can play in the backyard without me having to be immediately at her side....

Every city is very different. The colors arent an issue unless it was a development area or gated community where everything is cookie cutter. The only issue would be in turning a residence into a non-residence but if someone is living in the house I cant imagine it's too hard to add a "home office" type of designation in most areas.

According to the article they didn't violate any city ordinances or anything. I think they just bought a residential house and painted it like a rainbow. Pretty awesome IMO. I'd love it if it prompts the church to move.
This is extremely awesome. Very happy to hear that an organization like Planting Peace exists and is not afraid to show its pride (no pun intended) in the face of its enemy. Truly a reason to keep faith in humanity.
Why stop at a rainbow? They should just have a flag that has the troll face on it with a "You mad?" slogan at the bottom and have that flag raised every sunday during their worship hours.
@Raver: Come now, this is somewhat serious from their perspective. Even if it is freaking hilarious from an irony standpoint, the general message and purpose of the church is serious enough that they would probably refrain from anything too silly.
For the record though, I'd laugh too

I fully expect Westboro's response to be pointing cameras at the center 24/7 and reaching desperately for any excuse whatsoever to sue them.
Why? Suing people hasn't exactly been the WBC's mode of operations... The only times they have been involved in law suits has been when they were being sued or when their constitutional rights were at issue.

Lawsuits are the last line of defense for any organization or business looking to quash their opposition. We do live in a litigious society where everybody and anybody will threaten to sue regardless of the reason. I'm sure if WBC wanted to sue they could find an issue no matter how frivilous it may be. Would the lawsuit follow through? That's uncertain.

Ummm, my point was why would we expect them to take a tactic they haven't taken before. The person I was responding to said thats what he (or she) thought they would do.
It makes no sense to assume they will take that route when they've never taken it before.

Yeah that's the exact opposite of the truth. Fred Phelps sued every former employer he's ever had before being disbarred for life, and the church's main source of revenue is provoking people into hitting them then suing them for all their bananas. Why do you think there's so many lawyers in that family?
Edit: eight years later and I hit post 1000! Let's celebrate with an infraction!
I don't see how this is a good thing.
Westboro Baptist Church is all about publicity and provoking. It is a money operation and more attention means more revenue for WBC.
The best thing would be to ignore WBC.
They feed on attention. It is a dirty win-win between them and the media.
Journalists get easy bits (no need to do real journalism), WBC gets money through donations/lawsuits.
(I know that I'm talking about WBC too...)

These are the decks that I have constructed, and are ready to play:

I'm not sure why WBC is such a big deal. Nobody really takes them seriously and I don't think they really reproduce that much, so they'll probably just end up going the way of the Shakers. They're such a parody of themselves at this point I fail to see the point in 'taking them on' and judging by their slogans and speech, they clearly aren't rational people.
I would just ignore them and wait for them to die out.
