As an only occasional beer drinker I'm on-the-outside-looking-in of the Beer Enthusiasts thread to some extent, but liquor is something I'm quite a bit more "enthusiastic" about, so -- discuss! Which distilled beverages do you fancy and which do you recommend?
I recently tried The Kraken black rum and must say I was impressed with the smoothness of a 94 proof liquor (and at a cheaper price than Captain Morgan's equivalent). It's also the only rum that I prefer straight and the bottle's a keeper, too (seriously, it's a work of art).
I also recently found the only moonshine I've ever enjoyed, Midnight Moon. I had the Cranberry, which I couldn't recommend to anyone who doesn't like cranberry; the taste was overpowering. And I wish it were bottled at more like 90 proof instead of 100 proof, because the taste of ethanol was very evident and straight seems like the only decent way to take it. But decent regardless, and now that I think about it I'm pretty sure I had the Apple Pie in the past without knowing it was moonshine (the Apple Pie's 70 proof and was quite a bit smoother).
I'm a whiskey guy, and if I have my choice, it's always Scotch. I drink it straight, no rocks and no water.
My favorite brand so far is Laphroaig; it's very peaty and smoky, takes a particular taste. If I were to recommend a scotch to start with, I'd say Glenlivet. Very smooth and not harsh. If you like that and want to get more adventurous, go with Macallan.

"[Screw] you and the green you ramped in on." - My EDH battle cry. If I had one. Which I don't.
My wife and I recently started making our own infusions, We've made a rosemary infused gin and a ginger infused rum... both were great, and took generic mid shelf spirits to a good level.
I'm trying to figure out what I wnat to make next...
Recently someone introduced me to a Pimm's Cup, which is Pimm's No. 1 mixed with either ginger ale, 7-up, or British-style lemonade if you get that, and with a lemon wedge and cucumbers. It's delicious, easily one of the best cocktails I've had.
Let's see what else:
I love cognac. Brandy is always appreciated.
There's a cocktail called B&B which is brandy and Benedictine mixed, and it's awesome.
I love bourbon and Tennessee whiskey. It's hard to go better than Jack Daniel's.
Cannot stand any other kind of whiskey. Though Drambuie's nice.
I enjoy vodka, usually straight. Favorite is Stolichnya.
I recently found out about a brand of Irish cream called Carolans, which is both cheaper and tastes better than Bailey's. Bailey's tastes too much like Irish Whiskey, which I cannot stand, but Carolans' is a lot smoother. It's quite a tasty beverage.
Gin is delightful as long as it's mixed. Love martinis.
Rum is good as long as it's mixed. The Dark 'n' Stormy is among the best cocktails ever.
For me, I have found that I have an affinity for Grand Marnier neat.
Jack is my bourbon of choice, but Im not a bourbon guy and I love Lynchberg Lemonades.
Ketel One is the go-to vodka where im at. I also found that it does remarkably with infusions.
Kruzan rum (Crusan?) is also stocked.
I highly recommend the Lynchburg Lemonade and offer a tidbit to play around with the recipe... It lends very well if you do.
