Well he is playing rares in the 60 infact 8 of them. Pool+harbor. Or do these no longer count...idk what else to say. If he had to use guildgates/basics im pretty sure he wouldn't of top8'ed.
The difference between BR Zombies and this is that instead of burn, he backs his creatures up with disruption.
BR Zombies may not be top dog anymore but it still certainly packs a punch.
Although, this mono green beat down has more options to block with, Young Wolf, Wolfir Avenger, Strangleroot, etc. all serve as reasonable blockers giving it an edge against Aggro.
The disruption gives it an edge against control.
Plus some luck. But I thought comparing it to BR Zombies would be a fairly apt comparison.
I would attribute it more to good deckbuilding than luck. Saying that his deck would be better with rares ignores the fact that he isn't actually playing any bad versions of a rare card. He is just using commons and uncommons that work well together in a tempo deck like this.
Yeah I'm not too impressed with this. It's not that he didn't impress me by getting 2nd--that's cool and all--it's that he didn't do anything overly unique.
First of all, like the guy said above me, Hinterland Harbor and Breeding Pool are rares worth a total of about $60. Those are probably the most important rares he could possibly have, especially in an aggro/tempo deck. Replacing them with basic lands would probably be better than guildgates because the tempo dictates that he has a play every turn, and the fact that he has both of his colors open without missing a drop is crucial.
Second of all, he's just playing solid tempo cards in those colors. Most tempo cards aren't rare, because most tempo cards have no overly unique effect; they normally just have a good mana:p/t ratio.
Lastly, like someone said above me, it's not as if he's playing subpar cards to make a point (as far as I know), he's just playing the cards he feels fit together the best. This is evidenced by the 4 rares in his sideboard (Mayor and Revenge of the Hunted), so essentially I don't understand what the big deal is.
I wouldn't even bat an eye at this deck if you hadn't made this thread, other than maybe at the fact that he got 2nd with a UG aggro deck when the meta is primarily RG.
I was expecting a red deck, but I guess all the playable drops in red are rare nowadays.
While you're mostly right about this, as I mentioned above this is because all the Red cards in these past blocks have had unique effects, probably to keep up with the strength of midrange decks and thragtusk. All of the cards like Hellrider, Ash Zealot, Stromkirk Noble, etc. would be absolutely insane in limited so they have to be at least rare.
I really like the Abundant Growths in his deck. I've been playing this deck for a while now with Unsummon instead of Growth (taking out a land for another Simic Charm) and Growth seems to be the better option due to the heavy color requirements.
Back on topic however, there's not really anything to make of it being "rareless". Those cards actually do work really well together. Hybridization with Evolve and Undying has a really useful application in catching aggro by complete surprise with surprise blockers to wipe out their board.
You can stack evolve triggers in a way that gives you a 3/4 flyer, a 2/2, and a 3/3 by turn 2. Having a bunch of surprise blockers (especially when the aforementioned situation appears to simply be a 1/2 flyer and a 1/1 Undying beforehand) can be a blowout to aggro and blitz decks. It completely neutralizes the T1 Champion into T2 Emissary + Lightning Mauler draws.
I would attribute it more to good deckbuilding than luck. Saying that his deck would be better with rares ignores the fact that he isn't actually playing any bad versions of a rare card. He is just using commons and uncommons that work well together in a tempo deck like this.
This.
That deck actually looks pretty powerful. He is running 16 1 drops that all generally get in for 2 on turn 2.
He has paired it with a lot of rempo swinging cards like Rapid Hybridization, which can negate removal for his dudes or pull him out of a fatty pinch, 4 Spell ruptures to pick off spells on turn 2, which is a big play in an aggro on aggro match, Simic Charm of mid game disruption, early game pumps or anti removal. Cantripping color fixing to drop more 1 drops and Rancor to boot.
It is very much a well constructed deck. Consistently destructive is the question. He did well with it so I would assume it is solid enough to offer up consistent results.
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
IMO, the rare lands count because try replacing shocklands with their non-rare counterparts and see how consistent the deck is.
I think a better thing to say about this deck is it doesn't run any "elite" cards. No Thragtusk, Sphinx's Rev, etc. And yet the decklist looked well thought out and not just throwing a bunch of cards together to force synergy.
-Shrug- It's not like he was playing terrible cards.
I don't exactly think this is a great deck, but all the cards were solid even if they aren't rares.
Not much to see, imo.
It's an okay deck, seems well-positioned against the midrange decks that did well at the event. Let's not get carried away here though; a Bronze TCQ is not a high-level event. It's slightly more competitive than an FNM.
From what I see, it is a well built second-class aggro deck.
I would attribute the second placing to:
-Good draws in an aggro deck.
-Good piloting.
-Lack of effective hate for an, essentially, rouge deck.
The concept itself is pretty sound, Dryad Militant mainboard is both an aggressive creature and an effective hoser for Junk Reanimator, the various regenerate and undying effects are effective against control and removal-oriented midrange, Abundant Growth smooths draws by acting as a back-up mana source (21 lands,) color fixing (although it is only 2 colors,) and cantrips which further increases consistency in an otherwise streamlined deck.
And, without adding on to the post and creating a wall of text, the side board looks to be quite effective against the current meta.
I'm not sure this is an aggro strategy we'll see a whole lot of, but it sure looks fun to pilot!
i was wondering if abudant growth was may be a typo for giant growth in that list... because a "super aggro" deck that want fixing doesn't make sense for me

This is a neat deck, especially for budget. I like that it can drop some decent pressure and then counter a Thragtusk.
Sadly I don't think it gets much from DGM. MaybeSkylasher to block Geist of Saint Traft and any random Delver of Secrets? Or maybe Turn (Turn/Burn) by itself to power through Thragtusks and other problem creatures?
Good about this, is that they teach people that they can come with creative decks and be pretty competitive.
Bad thing is now people will copy this deck xD. I'm fine with it, I will be glad to face it in my locals and just Rolling Temblor it.
Unless you have two...I don't really think this deck will roll over to a crappier pyroclasm. They all have undying or a way to regenerate or will be too strong to kill. Pillar would do you better.
I'm not really surprised. Seems to play similarly to the BUG aggro list that runs Dreg Manglers and Duskmantle Seers. Some people don't take Spell Rupture in an aggro deck very seriously until their Thragtusk gets countered and then they die the next turn.
Any deck running 12 one drops , 4 Strangleroot Geist, 4 Rapid Hybridization, 4 Spell Rupture is awesome in my book. Still skeptical about the Abundant Growths...
He beat out Jund, Aristocrats, Bant, and Reanimator WITHOUT RARES.

Big props. I tried a similar version over a month ago with Invisible Stalker and Increasing Savagery added... made the finals in both FNMs.
