If the mana and spell base is close to right, I have room for 22 other creatures, maybe 24 if I cut 2 Keyrunes. Spell emphasis on removal or supporting aggression.
Tried to keep a low curve, even though the Foundry Champion appeals to my inner Timmy.
Boros would probably be better with Gruul, but Gruul has Gruul. Maybe a junk like Golgari/Boros would work. Izzet/Dimir is the other mashup I'm curious about.
I took a different direction than the article author, going with Bred for the Hunt and more evolve. I don't buy the anti-Gyre Sage, pro-Murmuring Phantasm propaganda just yet. Hindervines may be sketchy, but Encrust is awful. 25 lands because hitting every drop is especially important. It's too full at 3 mana, which makes me question Frilled Oculus over another 1-2 mana card.
Your comment about the "propaganda" made me laugh, in a good-natured, non-mocking way (I'm the author of the GM article, btw). Based on the comments on the article alone, no choice I made has spawned the controversy of that Gyre Sage, which I find really interesting. To flesh it out here, I found the Sage only good early on- even by midgame her contribution to the board was minimal. By then, I generally wanted to draw either answer's to my opponent's threats, or creatures that could evolve my board to get past them. She's a superb turn-2 play that falls off rapidly from there, and that felt like too much of an ask for a miser's copy in a 60-card deck.
That said, there are a lot of respectable voices clamouring for her inclusion. I'd love to hear your rationale, this is a fascinating corner case subject for me.
Also, although Encrust is pretty poor removal to be sure, it's removal- here's where the precon format somewhat mimics limited. I'd also curious why you'd cut a spell that locks down an opposing creature in favour of a conditional Fog variant. To me, Hindervines is an occupant BSCM-land ("best-case scenario mentality), and it's never worked as well as hoped in playing the stock deck.
Again, really appreciate the thread and the entries here, this looks like great stuff. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the next four compare with what's been put forth here.
PS- Bred for the Hunt was really tempting
