I believe this means that we will see more full cycles of duals instead of just the normal 5. I think this is a fantastic philosophical change as it gives players more options and further removes the out-of-date allied/enemy concept.
5 more rares that are not really useful for draft. Kinda depends on the format, but this is generally true. Sure the lands will be useful for constructed when it is over, but draft decks do not really need rare duals unless it is a super multi-color plane like ravnica.

I am looking for Date Stamped promos from Khans of Tarkir block so I can finish my set. Check my wants if you have any.
Currently offering 2 non-foil Kolighan's Command for a Date Stamped foil!
I've been on the side of the fence lately that the Onslaught fetches have crossed a price threshold that would keep them from being reprinted [for Modern], but that post combined with this recent one has me rethinking a little...?

I wouldn't worry about those being reprinted for a long time, if ever. Fetch lands have a lot going against them, not just the price. I feel like this announcement is more about the Core Set/Innistrad buddy lands or lands on a similar power level.

That's why I linked the other post as well. I always (or at least recently) figured that if they reprinted the fetches, it would be the enemy ones, either in a Standard set or, more likely, a MM2 type of deal. But maybe this opens up the possibility of seeing the originals again more than some of us have been thinking.
Of course, he could just be talking about for Standard - but Modern is a relevant format for Wizards, so who knows. I definitely don't take it to mean that 10 slots in a given set will be used for lands - that seems like too many.
I don't see why they can't just fit all ten Rootbound Crag lands into a core set. That's fair enough. I don't think fetch lands will be coming back in the core set though; they don't seem as "basic" as the Dragonskull Summit, Sunpetal Grove, etc.
I hope this either means enemy Fast-lands or man-lands in M14. Both would be greatly appreciated in Modern. Hell, a reprint of the enemy colored [CARD=glacial fortress]checklands would be nice, considering that they're quadruple the price of their allied pairs.
Well, that adds to my theory that there won't be any dual lands in M14/Theros.
There's no doubt that if they are making a monocoloured block with Theros (which they are,) then the manabase would have to be slightly worse than during RTR if they want people to shift their focus from the themes of RTR to those of Theros. However, printing 5 allied dual lands over the 10 checklands would have technically be a "worse" manabase, but saying that they want to keep the balance between the allied and enemy lands, that most definitely means that the shocklands and guildgates will be the only dual lands we'll have access to in the next Standard (it is still a lot better than what is usual for Standard)
Not a supporter. It could just be that Ravnica has me burnt out on both cycles and greedy mana bases, but I'm increasingly getting an "every color needs to get the same things" vibe.
Not to mention, more boring cracked packs. Lands are both boring, and something I'll have to outright buy from the start, so the amount of depressing packs is going to double.
They need to take a page from Dragon's Maze and print the rare dual land on the basic land sheet. This means that the core set could have the fixing support while removing those bad for limited and casual players boosters.
I think they should wait for the RTR block to rotate before doing this due to the abundance of goodstuff decks that are encouraged. I don't think players should be punished for wishing to play a particular combination of colours, but there should be some opportunity cost to encourage creativity and experimentation.
As an aside, I wouldn't mind seeing the painland cycle again as a bit of a throwback. That said, I believe there was an article published that claimed newer players didn't like being pinged every time they wanted coloured mana, so I'm skeptical that they will be reprinted.

Because core sets are smaller than they used to be when they had all 10 painlands. There are fewer than 30 slots for reprinted rares.
Well, at least now we know that we won't be getting an Onslaught fetchlands reprint without the Zendikar ones in tow as well. Not sure whether that helps or hurts the chances of seeing them again soon. Probably hurts, since that's a ton of monetary value to be poured into a single block on lands alone, and it's a pretty significant sign when shocklands are largely the most valuable RTR block cards. Then again, they also might not want to leave the cycle incomplete anymore in modern.
This also indicates to me that we might see monocolor utility lands in M14 instead of duals. Cycling lands and manlands seem like good candidates for inclusion.
