For those of you who don't know, Jenny McCarty is a major anti-vaccination promoter. She frequently uses misinformation and pseudo-science to back her beliefs about the harmful nature of vaccines.
The comforting thing is that no-one at all seems excited by the fact that she's on this show.

If I'm counting on The View to give me accurate and substantial information regarding health and science...
...I'm doing something very, very wrong.
Sure, maybe you don't, but its actual target demographic is much more prone to doing so. Which I'm not excusing in the slightest, but it's a clear reality - some people get informed in poor ways. Like The View.

This is my worry. The target demographic is the moderately educated, middle-class housewife. The EXACT demographic where anti-vaccine nonsense is flourshing. Anti-vaccers aren't the poor, their middle class suburbanites who are just well educated enough to feel competent making decisions about vaccines but not well educated enough to realize they don't know what they're talking about.

But you can't protect people from stupidity. If someone is inclined to believe the anti vaccination nonsense, they are going to do so regardless of Jenny McCarthy being on The View or not.
There are nearly infinite sources of misinformation available to people in the modern world. If people don't take the time to educate themselves so that can tell what is BS vs what isn't, we can't do it for them.
And while I disagree with Jenny McCarthy's opinions/thoughts on the matter, it's a free country and I support her right to say it. If the people who own the View think they will get ratings by putting her on, it's their show, they can do whatever they want. If the viewers don't like her or what she says, we all have the ability to change the channel.

You've got a fair point, but the problem isn't just that these people aren't vaccinating their own kids (about which I wouldn't care if it only affected their kids), it's that their kids become vectors for disease. Their bad choices can have severe repercussions The entire point of vaccines is to give enough people immunity that diseases have a hard time spreading, but when you take significant chunks of the middle class population who don't vaccinate at all, you've got rises in a lot of vaccine preventable illnesses.
Ironically, the newest and biggest threat to Public Health is the Public.

Sure, but disease spreading due to non vaccination is hardly unique in it's capacity to hurt victims due to the negligence/stupidity of others. Kids are killed by gunfire every day, but there are people are still walking around populated area with concealed weapons on them. Babies are killed in car crashes everyday, but we still don't make cars that refuse to start if safety belts are not clicked in. Pedestrians get killed because we don't take drivers licenses away from 85 year old grand moms who can't see.
Unfortunately, when you have free will, you get people making poor/disastrous decisions in the bargain. Personally, instead of limiting the free speech of people like McCarthy, or telling companies who they can/cannot hire for a job, I'd rater expand public education and awareness around vaccinations, and vote with my viewing eyes. I prefer to fight ignorance with knowledge, not censorship.
There's no perfect answer, it's a part of the human condition, but I always like to err on the side of freedom vs overregulation
Not only can't we protect people from their own stupidity, I believe we shouldn't.
Natural selection and all that
We harm the species by sheltering, caring for, and forgiving the monumentally stupid from the consequences of their actions.
Epidemics don't give a **** about how smart a person is, and herd immunity breaks if too few people are vaccinated. We harm the species by not helping.
Sure, but disease spreading due to non vaccination is hardly unique in it's capacity to hurt victims due to the negligence/stupidity of others.
Vaccines completely don't work unless you have a critical mass of people vaccinated, so that you have herd immunity. If enough people don't vaccinate their kids, they're not simply putting their own kids at risk, or a significant percentage of kids (which is the case with certain octogenarian drivers, or irresponsible gun owners) but in fact every single person in the country.

They work for the person vaccinated, right? If I get vaccinated, and someone else doesn't, that doesn't neutralize my vaccination.
But you can make the same argument about guns, or cars, or anything that can hurt someone. A crazy person with a gun is a danger to anyone he comes in contact with. A person behind the wheel is a danger to everyone around them. Mortgage lenders giving loans to people who can't pay for them then securitizing them and selling them to investors can harm a planetary economy.
The fact is that it's not against the law not to get vaccinated, and people are free to express whatever opinion they what, no matter how ignorant it is. Freedom of speech isn't just freedom of speech you agree with. I'm firmly on the "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend with my life your right to say it" camp.

Herd immunity.
While it won't neutralize your vaccination, a portion of the population CANNOT receive immunizations. Herd immunity protects _those_ people. If you can receive immunization but choose not to, you are basically giving the finger to people with auto-immune problems.
Vaccination is not a freedom of speech issue. It's a public health issue, like taking a dump in a water reservoir. "Hey, I have the right to express myself! Who cares if people get sick?" It's a parking-in-handicap-zones-when-I'm-not-handicapped issue.
They work for the person vaccinated, right? If I get vaccinated, and someone else doesn't, that doesn't neutralize my vaccination.
Not necessarily.
The mere act of getting vaccinated only protects a certain percentage of those who receive the vaccine. This is a pretty large percentage, to be certain, but the percentage that doesn't receive immunity from this kind of vaccination is sizable, and there's no way of determining who has the immunity and who does not without infecting them. There's also a sizable population of people who, for various reasons, are unable to receive vaccines, especially the immunocompromised and pregnant women.
The point of vaccinating a whole population is to make it so that the odds of anyone coming into contact with someone who doesn't have immunity are low enough that effective spread of the contagion is extremely unlikely. Every person who refuses the vaccination, however, dramatically increases that likelihood. After a certain critical mass, the vaccination becomes essentially useless for a large percentage of the population, whether they received it or not.

You guys are missing a few points. While I do get one vaccination (Tetnus); the rest do nothing or harm me. There is a large number of people who are having issues with vaccinations. Any of you remeber swine flu? ALOT of people took the vaccination and had symptoms similar to polio (legs failed to respond). Now they are severely harmed by new flu shots and have to get doctors slips to avoid being forced to get the shots in certain jobs. I have to get one cause of Gene translocation syndrome. Hell, many common drugs do nothing to me or just give me the runs (Viccodine, Allergy meds, other sedatives during dental work and stuff I am affriad to be perscribed). I had the flu vaccine a few times, and I got the flu anyway a few days later! A school forced me to get the Heppatitis shots and I was sick for weeks after. Never got Hep., but I could have lived without missing a simester. I rarely get sick anyway, but alergies kick my ass.
Immunizations are not neccessarly the end all. Multiple flu (or other viruses) strains can make the process pointless. The best immunization process you can prsonally do is regular excercise, being properly hydraided, not drinking out of water fountains, washing your hands frequently while on the town, and eating a well balenced diet. Since I started working out everyday, my allergies are significantlt less and sick days have been gone. My secret weapon is also grape juice (100%) and mix it with half/half with water.
I think McCarthy is a symptom of a greater problem, and that she should be gagged — not in some sort of kinky sense — so that she doesn't spout her nonsense. Goodness knows that there's enough malarkey without her and her learned medical opinions.
That's what I disagree with. The government restricting free speech and engaging in censorship is, to me, FAR more dangerous then anything Jenny McCarthy could ever say. She should (and does) have the right to say whatever she wants, and the producers of the View have the right to hire whoever they want. The right to free speech does not just cover free speech you agree with.
Plus, it's completely ineffective as a tactic, since all it does is embolden the people who believe what she was saying in the first place, and push people which may have been on the fence in her camp (if it was nonsense, why are they covering it up?)
You fight ignorance with education, not censorship.
Any of you remeber swine flu?
As someone who was hospitalized and nearly killed by swine flu, yes, I remember it very well. Flu vaccinations are incredibly safe and should be taken by everyone barring an existing medical condition that prevents it.
The best immunization process you can prsonally do is regular excercise, being properly hydraided, not drinking out of water fountains, washing your hands frequently while on the town, and eating a well balenced diet
Incorrect. Viruses do not care how hydrated you are, or how much you exercise, or how much grape juice you drink. Your immune system either has the correct antibody to fight the virus or it doesn't, your level of physical fitness makes no difference at all. That's why vaccination works, it's triggers your body to create the correct antibody. The health of the individual has nothing to do with getting infected at all, just how well they can survive the symptoms once they do get infected.
During the last swine flu outbreak the elderly, normally a group who is high risk during flu outbreaks, rarely contracted swine flu. Because a similar flu outbreak in the 60's made them immune. Old folks in their 80's were shrugging off the virus fine, healthy people in their 20's and 30's were getting infected in record numbers.
I had the flu vaccine a few times, and I got the flu anyway a few days later
No flu vaccine is 100% effective, as none cover every strain. And if you didn't get the flu vaccine, you still would have gotten the flu you got on those occasions. No flu shot "triggers" the flu or makes you more susceptible to getting it.
As someone who was hospitalized and nearly killed by swine flu, yes, I remember it very well. Flu vaccinations are incredibly safe and should be taken by everyone barring an existing medical condition that prevents it.
No they are not safe for everyone cause they might not know what the side effects are. Everyone should ask their doctor first.

You realize that if a Vaccination lowers your immunity uppon receiving it, thus opening yourself up to the virus your body was perfectly fighting before? The correct antibody is what matters. There are many different flu strains. Health of the indiviual has everything to do with how you are infected. Open wounds, cleanliness, active/lethargic, exsposure to varying temps (mountain cold), and other factors. If you excercise frquently; your body will fight harder and more efficiently.

The 60's. A real moment in cleanliness for folks in there 20's and 30's.

Last paragraph, No....just....no. I have only gotten the flu a very few times, and getting the flu immediatly after vaccine gave me horrid sick feeling was no coinsidence. I would have not gotten the flu if I just passed on the vaccine.
I think the concern over censorship is well-intentioned but ultimately misplaced. I haven't seen anyone advocating a law that would bar Jenny McCarthy from spreading conspiracy theories; the most I've seen is people trying to organize boycotts or letter-writing campaigns to convince the producers of The View to fire her. This may seem similar, but really it's fundamentally different from real censorship, because no one is infringing on the rights of the producers. They're just using their own legitimate freedoms (of speech, and to decide what they will watch and which companies' products they will buy) to register their disapproval, which the producers may respond to or ignore at their preference.
Freedom of the press belongs to those who own one, and I see no problem with people exercising their rights to persuade those owners to make different choices in who they lend their press to. Free speech does not come with the power to compel anyone else's speech/buying habits/etc, so everyone should be prepared to accept any lawful consequences of the things they say, whether it's contrary speech, attempts at persuasion, or a refusal to support someone's published speech by engaging in commerce with them.

Old folks in their 80's were shrugging off the virus fine, healthy people in their 20's and 30's were getting infected in record numbers.
No flu vaccine is 100% effective, as none cover every strain. And if you didn't get the flu vaccine, you still would have gotten the flu you got on those occasions. No flu shot "triggers" the flu or makes you more susceptible to getting it.
Last paragraph, No....just....no. I have only gotten the flu a very few times, and getting the flu immediatly after vaccine gave me horrid sick feeling was no coinsidence. I would have not gotten the flu if I just passed on the vaccine.
My Grandfather used to work for FDA and later a company that produced Vaccines. He refused to take any vaccines was told us he under job and law pressure to not comment on anything related to downsides of vaccines. This may not be the best article but it touches on a few reasons why I don't take any them. http://www.offthegridnews.com/2012/05/17/filthy-injections-for-health-the-dirty-secrets-of-vaccine-contamination/
It is a personal reason to not partake in vaccines and is a help cause that creates a control group.
