Our local podcast here at MTGSalvation, MTGCast, is in need of a logo. As the Monthly Photoshop Contest is known for our ability to produce, well, photoshopped images we have been asked to help in this. The winning entry will be used for the MTGCast website and t-shirts as well as all other future productions from the show. The logo should fit in the box requesting a logo, as seen below. Further size requirements will be editted in soon.
Also note that this has delayed the Unglued/Unhinged art photoshopping, however, it has not been forgotten. Expect it next month.
Okay I have another question here, since we are making a logo for what seems to be an official site, and you are indeed planing on making shirts with it and "future productions" whatever that means.
I have some doubts about what kind of images we can use, because some legal issues may ensue with images we get from say, an art collection site such as deviantart or even from MTG art... you know, copyrights and such
Your best bet is to use Adobe Illustrator or another Vector Graphics program in order to hand-make your logo. It's probably one of the entirely legal beyond all doubt ways to do this week.

Just some handy info here for anyone that's not familiar with how to do a vector graphic in photoshop (not many people know how to, such as myself before I saw this, and not many people have Illustrator): Creating a Vector Graphic in Photoshop
I plan on having a submission later, but this is just something I thought might help people in creating more professional looking logos if using only photoshop.

"If I take death into my life, acknowledge it, and face it squarely, I will free myself from the anxiety of death and the pettiness of life - and only then will I be free to become myself." - Martin Heidegger
Wouldn't the easiest way to get it into vector form be downloading a vecotrs graphics program like inscape, opening your final work in it, and then just saying it as a .svg file?
Probably, I was just throwing the info out there for anyone that wanted to avoid large downloads, bootlegging, etc.

Well let's think about iconic symbols associated with Podcasting.
Radio Waves
Speakers
Radio Towers
Microphones
Headphones
iPods
Now some Magic related things.
Mana Symbols
Tap Symbol
Magic Card Back
Pentagon of Colours
Card Types
So now we could take two elements, one from each, and combine them.
Ideas:
- Pentagon of symbols relating to Casting.
- Speaker with White Mana Symbol "rays" coming out
- An Artifact called MTGCast
- Headphones on a Black Mana
- iPod with a Pentagon theme
First you'll see the Official iTunes podcasting logo, the purple one. You'll also see the orange RSS logo, with some headphones on it. Perhaps a logo inspired by these logos?
Here are some examples I whipped up:
Keep in mind we should not actually use Copyrighted symbols. But making symbols that closely resemble magic symbols should work. Feel free to steal/eleaborate-on/recreate any of these.
I hope this helps as a starting point for those who have no ideas.
EDIT: I have been told that the Skull with Headphones is in fact in use by another Podcasting website. So don't use it.
Just a little thing to make the logo look better, its pointing up cause mtgcast is at the top.
The number one rule of logo design is to cut away any unnecessary elements. I would say that the mountain element doesn't really contribute conceptually or visually and you should cut it.
Xander, I think your skull logo and the iPod logo on the left are working well. Somethings funny though about the space between the top of the skull and the headphones. Maybe try filling in the eyes as well for consistency (since the other space is filled in by the stroke weight).
Here's my entry. The mic, cards, and thing about cast are all hand made:

I haven't uploaded the .svg yet.
My goodness. That mic is amazing. I absolutely love everything about this, except the cards... the fuzzy yellow border seems really out of place imho. If you sharpen it up to match the rest of the image, it would make me go :o.
The theme this month is:

So do you want the logo to be the same size as the "Logo coming" portion, or the entire thing, etc?

Alright - well I'm trying to get an idea of what the dimension limits are going to be. >_<

IIRC it's some sort of grayish color.

Hah, this breast cancer awareness pink does make it a bit harder.
I'm learning to make alters.
Since this is a logo, perhaps make the final submission an SVG?

@ForD: That looks really good. I like the microphone and it's just put together well.
I would probably shop something up myself, but I have absolutely no ideas.
