On wizards' site today, I was asked to take a survey about a new project called "Magic Insider" or something similiar. Basically, you would pay a fee to get a promo card each set and get to cut in line for paying entry and deck registration at PTQs and Prereleases. Can anyone else confirm this?
I cant find anything about this on the site? Were did you find it?

Hey - just got the survey myself too. Here's the deal straight from the survey:

The Magic Online Insider Package Become a Magic Online Insider and gain access to exclusive content designed specifically with Magic Online players in mind. As part of your monthly subscription, you gain access to features designed to enhance your Magic Online experience, including:
One exclusive online promo card with each new Magic set
Two free members-only tournaments (with prizes) per month
A personal page on the wizards website with "myspace-style" social networking features, including Magic images to use to customize the page
One exclusive, members-only avatar per year
One free "draft set" of three booster packs per month
Edit: No price specs on this yet. In fact they were asking me what would be reasonable.
It seems to me like this is for magic online, not real magic.
Considering you can redeem your 'fake' cards for 'real' ones, they essentially both have the same amount of 'realness' to them.
I don't like the idea, don't like it at all. This just seems to drive home the 'We're desperate to scam you out of all your money' feel that WotC has been giving off lately.
Yah you can redeem "online cards" for "real cards" but you have to have a full set of cards that the card(s) you want are. Ex: If you want to get a sliver queen and some gold slivers, (they're all from stronghold) you would need to get a complete set of stronghold cards online before redeeming. Also to note stronghold is not on MTGO. If you wanted Akroma, Ixidor, and Karona, then you would need to get MTGO complete sets of Onslaught, Legions, and Scourge.
"If I do go to heaven, I'll smack god across the face and tell him to get me a grilled-cheeses sandwhich and then say 'Yea what now god!? Say some'in! I dare you!' "
Yeah, just refresh some. They ask you what you think a reasonable price is, I said 20-30 bucks, because it doesn't give you much besides the packs. What'd you guys put?
Sounds like an evil plan. Giving out exclusive deals to monthly subscribers only, add them up from time to time and then eventually everyone joins in, or else they won't get anything. I don't like it.
This could be horrible. If MTGO ever does switch to a monthly membership fee, I will feel insanely cheated and that will permanently sever my ties with this game and this company. I don't want to get too riled up yet, but all the recent trends have shown that Wizards expects fans just to suck it up and roll with whatever punches the company throws at us. All they seem to care about is the Yankee dollar now that they have the masses under their spell.
What there are thinking about doing is adding a bonus monthy subscription. They are NOT mandating that is the only way to play MTGO. It is just an added option.
They couldn't put a monthly fee on MTGO since they do not provide content other than a place to play. Everything on MTGO you need to buy in order to get your decks, so adding a base subscription fee is even more damaging to them. The Insider is basically a gold-member, which pays to enjoy a little bit more

If it's what it sounds like, it may be worth it depending on the cost. *free drafts* and two *free tournaments* sounds like a good deal [especially if the tournies include sealed...unlikely though]. My guess is it's an opportunity for MTGO players to submit themselves to a 'monthly fee', which grants product and tourney entries as a part of the deal.
Since I've been weaning off of the financial pitfall that is MTGO, I'm not likely to participate, although it does sound like a great deal. I'm interested to learn more.

Interesting, but I'd be wary to pay much more than the value of the draft set. I could possibly see myself doing this is the price were $15/month or less, but I somehow doubt that will be the case.

The cost should be little or no more than the cost of the boosters, as the boosters are all you're really gaining with this. Anything more and you might as well just spend the money on online boosters anyway, "crack" something cool, and sell/trade it for the other stuff.
The members-only tourney is not so special, unless the prizes are better than a regular tourney, and the personal page... Meh.
I should find that survey so I can suggest a $9.95 monthly fee.
Considering you can redeem your 'fake' cards for 'real' ones, they essentially both have the same amount of 'realness' to them.
Except for a) you can't redeem real cards for online cards directly, and b) as was mentioned, you have to trade in entire sets at once, and only for available sets (Mirage is online now, but it isn't redeemable).
I don't like the idea, don't like it at all. This just seems to drive home the 'We're desperate to scam you out of all your money' feel that WotC has been giving off lately.
Where is the 'scam' portion of this? What 'scam you out of all your money' have they been doing before this? This just seems to drive home the 'Some people will find a conspiracy in anything' that has always been around.
But seriously, it doesn't sound like they are forcing you to pay for the client. They are offering you a way to get some extra product and services at a discount.
Nah, its something at least a few MMO -> MODO refugees have requested - and I'm darn happy to see them consider it finally...
Alot of MMO'ers are used to the pay by month plan and prefer it since it makes the budgeting easy.
Yea, most definetly has it's advantages for budgetary concerns. This way would give you a draft and 2 tournaments a month for a set rate, and you wouldn't have to worry about buying "just one more" draft. On the WotC side of things, this gives them a set income to help plan around, as well as the "extra" factor, though many of the interested people already purchase tickets tournaments and draft sets.

If MTGO ever switches to a set monthly fee instead of "free", there will indeed be quite the uproar, as one of the draws to MTGO is that, like regular paper Magic, that we only have to buy the cards, then we get all the playing we want. Locking everyone out of their collections would make many people upset.
I think its a good idea! more "content"- content on mtgo would make it more fun than just "magic cards online". more avatars are always cool, promo cards= fun. 'special' tournies and drafts? im all for that. as long as the price is FAIR.... we'll see.
But if you boil it all down, take away the avatars and virtual goodies... you're getting 3 boosters a month and a new card every set. If its 20 bucks a month for that, its not worth it at all. 3 boosters doesnt equal 20 bucks no matter how much "free virual online thingies" you get.
Well this sucks... I got a different set of questions about a different product. As I only play MTGO, I really wanted to give feedback on that one. Survey quoted below:
The Magic: The Gathering Insider Package
Become a Magic: The Gathering Insider and gain access to exclusive content designed specifically with Magic: The Gathering players in mind. As part of your monthly subscription, you gain access to features designed to enhance your Magic: The Gathering experience, including:

Bleh. I don't play paper, so I rated this quite low.
You have to give Wizards props for this idea. This is just Wizards idea to do a similar service as MMORPG's with their own product;
In MMORPG's (which are really big right now, well, WoW at least is really huge) you pay a fee per month to play (indefinately). While I can see Wizards is reluctant to give unlimited access to all cards for a certain fee per month (because that would negate the entire purpose of boosters anyway and drive a lot of people from the paper version into the online version of magic), they still want to hop into the 'monthly subscription' bandwagon in this time where people are adopting it on a mass scale.
If it goes through, they would be guaranteed a certain amount of money per month, which is probably very nice to keep things balanced (I suspect that nowadays the sales for online are toploaded on expansions; everyone has to buy boosters so they can join the first few darfts/leagues etc and afterwards a lot of people have boosters because of their prizes and the demand for shop product goes down, while booster trading online goes up).
So I can see why Wizards is probing how to make this work, and it's a nice idea.
About the implementation (this is just my opinion);
*Exclusive promo card per set; Seems nice. I've always been envious of paper textless cards, and wondered why MTGO doesn't have them. Perhaps finally with this.
*Two free members only tournaments; Very nice. This not only would create a regular community (in time you'll get to know other Insiders) and give people incentive to try out new formats and play in a competative environment without the need to spend great tix in advance. For instance, I personally know I'm not that good of a competative player and thus so far haven't been doing many constructed events online. But if I can go to 2 of them for free anyway...
*Personal Page; Not very interesting. It would have been better to get a larger 'player information' box or something, since you can access that in game, people already know about it, and a lot of people would like it a bit improved.
*One exclusive Avatar; It's nice, but I wonder how it gets decided from which set it comes. Probably the standalone set.
*One draft set per month; this means at least once per month you get to play a nice draft. While I would have rather seen something with a League (since that would mean you would have stuff to do the entire month!), this is nice as well. And a league set would probably increase the cost too much.
What would I pay for this? Comparing it to WoW, I think a price of 13,99 a month (6 month 12,99 and 12 month 11,99) is a fair price.
Have you ever heard the term 'Collector'? You know, the kind of people who just may be interested in a 'Collectible Card Game'?
If you are in any way a Collector, you are being forced to pay the monthly fee in order to get the Cards and Avatars that won't be available anywhere else. If it was simply extra product or services, I wouldn't have an issue with it, but it's not. It's exclusive, can't get it unless you pay us a (likely) exorbitant fee, product.
As to what 'scam you out of your money' ploy they did before this; perhaps you missed Time Spiral's 'Timeshifted' (*cough*Ultra-Rare*cough*) cards?

So if I didn't attend a FNM in Sept, there's no way I can get a promo Astral Slide? If I don't go to Kobe, I can't get a promo Eternal Dragon? If I'm not a judge, I can't get a promo Balance? If I didn't attend the Time Spiral Prerelease, I can't get a promo Lotus Bloom? Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I don't follow MTGO, but aren't avatars and promo cards tradeable? That's the thing about it being a "collectible" cards game. You may not get everything you want directly from the manufacturer. This is why secondary markets exist.
