Enveloped in darkness, Bayushi Shoju slid the sword in his hands into its saya and put it aside. Moments later, a figure darted in the shadows and took it from the room. "Guard it well." Shoju whispered. The shadow only bowed in response.
With a solemn, deliberate motion he took a different katana and slid it into the folds of his obi. It fit well in the silk belt, as if it had found its final resting place. Shoju thought aloud, "You, the treasure of my Clan, will be my companion on this mad quest."
A moment later, a guard stepped into the room. He fell to his knees, putting his hands and head to the floor. "Bayushi-sama," he said, addressing his lord with respect.
"Do you bring news?" Shoju asked.
"All is ready, master. Your armies are hidden by the shugenja's spells. The shadows are cast."
Shoju nodded. "Excellent. We leave within the hour." The guard bowed again and raced from the room, leaving Shoju alone with the weight of what he would face.
It is a terrible night as storms rage over Otosan Uchi, the Imperial Capital. Under this cover of darkness and rain, ninja secretly infiltrate the castle while legions of Scorpion Bushi enter through a secret passage. They already prepare a defense against the impending siege of the other six Clans.
Meanwhile, in the Throne Room, Bayushi Shoju speaks with Emperor Hantei the 38th.
"I found an ancient prophecy," Shoju says gravely. "It tells of the greatest among us causing the Empire to fall by releasing a terrible evil into the world. I need your blessing to take every action necessary to avert this disaster."
"You have it, of course," says the Emperor, "but who, my dear friend, is more powerful than you?"
Shoju bows. "Only you, my Lord." he says as he draws his katana and strikes quickly. "Forgive me."
Wiping the tainted blade clean, he tosses the rag beside the beheaded body of the Emperor. Driven by purpose, he turns toward the family chambers and speaks aloud. “And now to kill your son, and finish the Hantei line.”
It is a truly dark night indeed for the Empire of Rokugan.
Days later, the combined forces of the Great Clans lay in wait at Otosan Uchi’s gates. Bayushi Shoju has proclaimed himself Emperor of Rokugan, and the Scorpion Clan has firmly secured the fortress. The deluge continues as war begins. The fighting seems to last for an eternity with little gain. Finally, a small attack force manages to breach the walls. They race to the throne room, and the doors bolt shut behind them. Suddenly, there is a flash of light, Shugenja magic or ninja trickery no doubt, and now 12 mirror images of Bayushi Shoju are facing one another!
It is up to you to determine whom the true traitors to the Empire are- this is L5R: Scorpion Clan Coup Mafia!
The living (1/12):
10. RafaelK - Emperor Hantei the 39th, Avatar of Fu Leng, Serial Killer

Terms of L5R that you may or may not find to be pertinent to this particular game:
Rokugan: The land where L5R is set.
Otosan Uchi: The capital city of L5R where Bayushi Shoju and the Scorpion Clan have committed their act of treason.
Personality: This is a character card in L5R, such as Bayushi Shoju.
Force: This is the numerical measurement of the Military might of a personality. When fighting in combat, the army with the highest combined Force wins the battle, the entire losing army is destroyed. In the event of a tie, neither side loses any troops. In the CCG, a "Military Victory" can be achieved by destroying the opponent's provinces through battle.
Chi: The lifeblood and essence of a personality. If a personality's Chi is ever reduced to zero (or below), (s)he dies. This is also the numerical measurement of a personality's competency when it comes to dueling.
Duel: A one-on-one test of skills. The victor lives, the loser dies. In the event of a tie, neither personality is killed. Outcome based on Chi.
Honor: A numerical measurement of one player's standing in Rokugan. In the CCG, a player can win an "honorable victory" by achieving a set number of honor points.
Personal Honor: A numerical measurement of a personality's standing in Rokugan.
Imperial Favor: A blessing bestowed on a player that can be used for several effects in the CCG. In this game, it will carry a different purpose.
Samurai: The standard warrior class of L5R.
Shujenga: The standard spell-casting class of L5R.
Monk: Enlightened individuals who seek the path of peace.
Geisha: A lady of the evening in L5R.
Ninja: Stealthy warriors trained in martial arts and other secret skills.
Kolat: The dark secret arts of assassination and espionage.
Elemental Rings: The five elemental rings holding the essence of being - Air, Earth, Fire, Wind, and the Void. In the CCG, an "enlightenment victory" can be achieved by getting all 5 rings into play.
I'm going to confirm my role pm here. Are we starting once everyone confirms, or do you have more rules to post first?

Rules (as taken from Aurorasparrow for the most part):
1. Vote and unvote in bold. Fos as you like. Once a majority is reached, a lynch will occur no matter what.
2. Deadlines will be set if necessary. The player(s) with the highest number of votes will be lynched at the deadline.
3. No quoting PMs. I'm far more allowing than forgiving- so if it's questionable, PM me first.
4. Farewell posts are ok. Don't reveal any information in them, please.
5. Don't edit posts. Don't delete posts. You will be modkilled. This is your only warning.
6. Lurking is not tolerated in a game as small as this. You will be expected to post at least once every 48 hours. If you anticipate being gone longer, please state it in the thread. If necessary, I will seek replacement.
7. Have fun and be civil.
You may begin - it is Day 1! With 12 alive, it is 7 to lynch!
EDIT: Obviously, other basic forum mafia rules apply. Don't talk about this game to anyone else, unless your PM permits you to do so, and that would only be at night.
Good morning all. I did some research on Wikipedia on L5R, seems very very intensive. A whole lot going on, but seems like a cool game. Anywho, the clans are Crab, crane, dragon, lion, mantis, phoenix, scorpion, and unicorn. It seems fairly obvious that the scorpion clan are the mafia...and in a 12 person game, there are probably, what, 3-4 mafia? That leaves 8 or 9 players left and 7 clans. Seems likely that there is a representative from each clan, mafia, and then perhaps some kind of person not affiliated with any clan? Or someone from a clan that's a traitor...just my early speculation.

Hmm. The interaction between Force and Chi is an interesting concept. Does anyone else think that Force involves nightkills? I'm slightly confused by DYH's description of it, but it could be something to keep in mind as to who does what.
I don't know, it's definitely interesting, because then a nightkill wouldn't be automatic...if they blindly choose someone with enough force, would that negate the night kill? If this is it, it seems to benefit the town more than the mafia...

The Scorpion Clan Coup: year 1123
The Scorpion Champion Bayushi Shoju discovers an ancient prophecy that indicates that the Hantei Emperor will become possessed by the dark god Fu Leng. Eager to save the Empire and under the thrall of the Bloodsword Ambition, Shoju launches a devious plan to prevent the prophecy by ending the Hantei line. He secretly places his army throughout Otosan Uchi, the massive capital city. Using his friendship with the Emperor to draw close to him, Shoju cuts Hantei XXXVIII down in cold blood, sending his troops throughout the city to suddenly and brutally seize control. Believing both the Emperor and his heir dead, Shoju declares himself Emperor. Shoju desperately stalls the armies of the clans until the Crab arrive, as he hopes Hida Kisada will ally with the Scorpion. The Crab do not, however, and the Scorpion army is crushed by the combined armies of the clans. Shoju himself is slain in a duel with Akodo Toturi, the Champion of the Lion. Believing the Hantei line to have been exterminated, Toturi declares himself the Emperor of Rokugan to prevent war among the clans. Hantei Sotorii becomes Hantei XXXIX: year 1123 Having been rescued from the Coup by the Phoenix Clan, the heir to the throne returns to Otosan Uchi after a rushed gempukku ceremony. His first edict upon taking the throne is the dissolution of the Scorpion Clan following their treachery, and the disgrace of Bayushi Shoju by discarding his remains on a communal pyre. Akodo Toturi protests this treatment of an honorable foe, angering the new Emperor. As punishment for his insolence, the Hantei declares Toturi to be ronin and removes the Akodo family name from the Lion Clan. The new Lion Champion Matsu Tsuko quickly decrees that anyone bearing the Akodo name must either swear fealty to the Matsu, Ikoma, or Kitsu, join the Deathseekers, live as ronin, or die (either by seppuku or by her own hand). The revered sensei Akodo Kage is the single exception to this edict. As an afterthought, Hantei XXXIX takes Bayushi Kachiko, Shoju’s beautiful young widow, as his bride to end the traitorous Bayushi line forever.
I bolded possibly important names above...note that the heir of Hantei is not killed...very possibly a character.

I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.

Yes he is.
I am Hantei Sotorii, True Emperor of Rokugan.
And I'm getting that one out of the way right off the bat because I'm a miller and would rather not have to explain that after someone investigates me.
With that out of the way, could someone with more knowledge of this system than I do suggest what would be considered (in the CCG) to be high values for force and chi and low values for force and chi? It's probably worth knowing (secretly) where one stands.
Wow...I predicted a claim...huh.
I had no idea what a miller was and looked it up on MafiaScum...basically then, you're claiming a vanilla townie that gets guilty back from investigations by cops? What I don't get is that I've never encountered a miller in all of the games I've played on here...and this is a mini...what are the chances?
Also MafiaScum says, "The important part of the Miller role is that the Miller is not told he is such. Rather the moderator assigns one person to be the Miller, but only tells him/her that the role is a vanilla townie. Thus, the Miller cannot simply claim day 1."

I've had bad experiences with claimed millers. On the other hand, they usually claim under pressure or in response to a guilty result, instead of in, say, their first post.

Okay, id like to trust you RafK. But i strongly am afraid of your claim.
You see, i was reading up on the wiki, and got pretty interested in basic plot events. The wiki wasnt very good at telling that good a story.
However here's the part that's dangerous:
Hantei Sotorii gets POSSESSED by Fu Leng, the evil force predicted in the scrolls that causes the Scorpions to start the whole damn war to begin with. In other words, i think its extremely likely that RafK could be an antitown neutral or could become so in the future (In the story, he becomes weakened by Bayushi Kachiko's poisons and then Fu Leng possesses him. A similar game mechanic is VERY possible).
Extreme FOS RafK, I don't know how to proceed on you.

Firstly, not all millers are vanilla. Also, the role has become fairly common knowledge now, and had it's profile raised quite a bit on this particular site since Sin City, I reckon, which included 3 millers, one of which was actually lynched because of a cop investigation.
Yadda yadda, slightly wary though, yadda yadda.
Oh, well I wasn't aware...didn't play Sin City. Anywho, I do see it as very stupid for him to claim IF he were mafia...very stupid, or very ingenious...that's where it's tricky. Unvote

Well I could argue that you used WIFOM to come to your vote on me. Would I fos someone (if i were mafia) if I knew them to be town? Does fos-ing even matter? What difference would a vote make? Do I vote someone for fos-ing someone, or do I fos them? But if I'm mafia, and I vote early, could that be considered a tell? But if he doesn't vote, but does fos, is this for fear of a tell, therefore being a tell in itself?
I was just addressing my opinion of his claim...in a way far less drastic than a vote.

That would be very interesting if it happened, but that's also the first I heard of it- my role PM doesn't mention any of that (and I may have been more circumspect if I realised there was dirt on my character). I can only say that this is a mini, in which there's generally not a lot of time for complicated chains of events, and as far as flavour goes this game is set before I become emperor and before that stuff happens.
Re: "miller's aren't told", I would say in most game I've seen with millers the miller is either told or it is at least strongly implied to the miller that something will look bad if they are inspected.
As discussion carries on, suddenly there is another brilliant flash of light and smoke erupts from the floor. Momentarily blinded, many of you stumble, a few even fall to the floor. The visage of a man appears before you illuminating the room with an eerie blue glow. Though distorted, you can discern that it is Emperor Hantei the 38th. Gasps echo throughout the chamber.
A frustrated scowl shows on his face as he speaks. "Even in this state I cannot see through this magical trickery, just as you cannot. I will, however, keep watch of your progress. My soul cannot rest until justice is dispensed upon the wicked."
With that, a shining tablet appears in his hands- there are markings etched upon it. A closer look reveals:
Hmm.. dont really know what to do about Rafaelk. He could be mafia, he might not. For now, im just going to ignore the fact that he has claimed a miller, as ZDS suggests.
And i might as well unvote, as it was just a random vote anyway

Yeah, let's all claim now ! Err… sorry. More seriously, one claim is more than enough for now, the game is still in the random phase .
If there's one behavior of mafia players I despise (besides they're enjoyment of consistently lynching me for being town), it's random voting. Do you have anything interesting to add, ZDS?
Anyway, I'm intrigued by DYH's post. I'll try tracking down some wikis and think about RafaelK's role in context.
DYH is referring to the assassinated emperor (the 38th), I'm the heir (who becomes the 39th, if the scorpion clan coup fails).
Puzzle: I'm not sure, my PM doesn't say anything like "you are a miller because of X". Judging from my flavour stuff, I think it's because most people don't believe I'm still alive, but there's one or two other possibilities (I suppose loran's suggestion is one of them, although nothing of that sort is in my PM).
But what would us not thinking you are alive have to do with an investigation result? Why would you have any 'bad' side at all? Unless that possession thing has merit...
hmm.

Considering he was under no pressure and (obviously) hadn't been investigated guilty yet, I'm going to take the miller claim as a non-tell for now. It doesn't seem like a reason to suspect RafK in and of itself. Nor is random flavor found on Wikipedia, btw.

Re: "miller's aren't told", I would say in most game I've seen with millers the miller is either told or it is at least strongly implied to the miller that something will look bad if they are inspected.
Hmm. This seems to contrast with the opening scene:
“And now to kill your son, and finish the Hantei line.”
This bothers me in combination with the Wiki. Apparently, he was the vehicle for Fu Leng, but that wouldn't seem right; a) Fu Leng's too evil to just be a "miller", unless there's an actual Fu Leng in the game, which is doubtful, and b) if the "traitors to the empire" equate to the mafia, then why would Hantei be a miller, who looks "evil" to the cop? This doesn't seem to fit together.
Instead, it feels more to me like RafK's running a gambit to cover up a potential role-change. Maybe he's a delayed SK or something of that nature? Right now, his role claim seems doubtful; masons aren't by definition informed of such, and according to the "Flash tutorial" on Mafia,
Considering he was under no pressure and (obviously) hadn't been investigated guilty yet, I'm going to take the miller claim as a non-tell for now. It doesn't seem like a reason to suspect RafK in and of itself. Nor is random flavor found on Wikipedia, btw.
I'm leaning more towards the fact that he did without pressure is a tell. To soften the blow later, and to provide as an excuse, while seemingly being irrefutable town confirmation.

I don't like this notation. If all my posts were only one word long people would start saying im not contributing(even more then they already do).
The opening flavor tells us that the role Raf claimed is likely to be in the game, and definatly an enemy of the mafia. In other words, he is not in need of our attention. If more information comes to light later on, we can deal with it then.
I'm currently getting mixed signals from AI, but I'm leaning pretty strongly non-mafia.

Naw. There wouldn't be any point.
EBWODP:
Wait, I just figured it out. We're all sorted alphabeticly in the front page, see?
Notice that if we group ourselves by first letter of our name, we have exactly seven groups. Same number of clans, right? This the only logical way for us to be sorted. Now, both the Cs and the Ps have enough to be the Scorps, and I can confirm that the Cs are town. This makes Puzz, Pibbs, and Pod our mafia.
Surely you don't have a role ability to be nonsensical?

My flavor is I was sucked through a mysterious space-time portal and I'm here to kill all the vampires, and my tracking ability is a combination of my Slayer and Native American skills.
I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.

Hantei Sotorii becomes Hantei XXXIX: year 1123
Having been rescued from the Coup by the Phoenix Clan, the heir to the throne returns to Otosan Uchi after a rushed gempukku ceremony.

Logical Reasoning is dead; Long Live Stupidity
-Alpha
Would RafK really try this as scum? Hmm...
Logical Reasoning is dead; Long Live Stupidity
Oh, well I wasn't aware...didn't play Sin City. Anywho, I do see it as very stupid for him to claim IF he were mafia...very stupid, or very ingenious...that's where it's tricky.

Thank you...my sentiments exactly. And, Pod, WIFOM may be 'fun' but is also a reality of how the game works...even if it's trite, it is used, and therefore must be used to reason.
-Alpha
I was just addressing my opinion of his claim...in a way far less drastic than a vote.
-Alpha
Simply because you asked me to...
I would have been content with just making my posts...you're the one that brought up WIFOM in post 30...And then you asked for how I see it, so I told you.
-Alpha
-Alpha
That works too...
-Alpha
That would be very interesting if it happened, but that's also the first I heard of it- my role PM doesn't mention any of that (and I may have been more circumspect if I realised there was dirt on my character). I can only say that this is a mini, in which there's generally not a lot of time for complicated chains of events, and as far as flavour goes this game is set before I become emperor and before that stuff happens.
Re: "miller's aren't told", I would say in most game I've seen with millers the miller is either told or it is at least strongly implied to the miller that something will look bad if they are inspected.

AlphaInsidious (2) - Arimnaes, Pod
ZeDorkSlipeur (1) - Loran16

If there's one behavior of mafia players I despise (besides they're enjoyment of consistently lynching me for being town), it's random voting. Do you have anything interesting to add, ZDS?
Anyway, I'm intrigued by DYH's post. I'll try tracking down some wikis and think about RafaelK's role in context.

Puzzle: I'm not sure, my PM doesn't say anything like "you are a miller because of X". Judging from my flavour stuff, I think it's because most people don't believe I'm still alive, but there's one or two other possibilities (I suppose loran's suggestion is one of them, although nothing of that sort is in my PM).
hmm.

Hmm. This seems to contrast with the opening scene:
Right now, his role claim seems doubtful; masons aren't by definition informed of such, and according to the "Flash tutorial" on Mafia,
which makes Rafk look more suspicious.

All I did was question your explanation...it's the name of the game. Of course I could just lurk.
I'm leaning more towards the fact that he did without pressure is a tell. To soften the blow later, and to provide as an excuse, while seemingly being irrefutable town confirmation.
