MTG Salvation

In my current Meta I am one of the only Grixis players, the problem I have encountered is whenever I play my main Grixis deck Thraximundar I get alot of hate. I am someone who prefers variety, its the spice of life, and since my meta is full of the same decks based around the same concepts. I feel that a Spell-Slinger deck would be that kind of Variety. So I decided I would put two and two together and I want to build a Spellslinger/Grixis EDH deck

As I look at alot of people's decks that are built around Nekusar is Draw hate. Wheeling and Dealing like a pro the Mindrazer is definitely a commander that can do alot. All the draw hate is fun, but the Mindrazer in my opinion is more than just that, All the card advantage he gives you I believe the Mindrazer is an optimal choice as a Spellslinger.

Nekusar's main concept of wheel and deal plays greatly into Occam's Razor. Occam's Razor is a principle using logic to make a choice between multiple options, which suggest you make your choice to ether Wheel/Deal or keep your cards in hand, the choice with the fewest assumptions should be selected. Meaning....if you have alot of cards that can do alot with the current board state, that is not the time to select using a Wheel Effect and if it is the opposite where you have alot of "what ifs" in your hand, that would be the time to Wheel.

When looking at all these cards I was looking first at Nekusar's Wheel and Deal core. I felt like more than not you would deal alot of damage to everyone but would be taken out before you could do enough. So ether you give him just that little more umpf to take people out or you focus on just stalling people out. I grew up being taught the best defense is a good offense.

So that brought me to look into the cards that can help improve that, Discard hate (people will have to discard with all the card drawing/wheeling) so cards like Liliana's Caress & Megrim all of the sudden make much bigger impacts on your wheels. One problem with Wheeling is you will find yourself putting cards into the GY you dont want there. Well lucky for us there is a core of spells and creatures that will allow you to return them to your hand or shuffle that gy into your library.

Growing up I was also taught not to put all my eggs into the same basket. One aspect of spell slingers is there are some creatures that love it when you cast instants and sorcery. When all else fails some beaters to finish off those who can withstand the wheel and deal.

Well I feel like the wall of text explains my thought process pretty well. Here is the deck.

We have a similar concept when it comes to building Nekusar. I have a spellslinger Riku, and have incorporated some of that deck's elements into Nekusar - that is, not making it a glass cannon all-in wheels deck.

Rakdos Charm and Suffer the Past - instant speed graveyard hate
Starstorm - instant speed sweeper
Psychosis Crawler - more pain, my back up Nekusar.

Why quest for ancient secrets over something like Feldon's Cane? Quest seems like an absolutely awful card.

Well I was just searching for a Artifact/Enchantment that at any given time I can shuffle my GY into my Library, I like the fact that I can always get it back over say something like the Cane that gets removed from the game. Yes the quest counters stink but honestly it seems alot more efficient to make sure you have plenty of cards in your gy (which wont be a problem with this kind of deck)

I can agree with Starstorm and it most likely will be put into my deck. Psychosis Crawler is just one of those cards I feel like I will be drawing way more hate than needed with him. I do admit that he is great and most likely will find his way into the deck.

Hmm, this is an interesting variant on Nekusar, just one question though, what does Quest for the Nihil Stone do in the deck? Getting the counters on it is easy, but how do you ensure that your opponents have no cards in hand?

The main counter to Wheeling is trying to empty your hand as fast as possible, if you cannot make them discard the cards then they do not suffer, this punishes them for doing so.

EDIT:I have decided that the Quest for the Nihil stone wouldnt work that well in the deck and is cut. Thank you for pointing it out


So looking at creatures and such and I am starting to like Talrand, Sky Summoner and Young Pyromancer wouldnt mind opinions if they are worth putting in over any other creature.


Finally I am interested in more Shuffle your GY into your deck effects, anyone know of more effects that could work?

Im probably going to put this together tonight and try it out, any more suggestions?

Yawg's Win and/or Past In Flames are always good to end the game via re-using Wheels for damage.

temporal casade i think it's called... entwine card, each player shuffles hand and GY or each player draws 7
time reversal, it's mana pricy but shuffles the GY while providing a wheel effect
time spiral, it's mana pricy and somewhat $ high, but wheels, shuffles GY, and untaps your lands. almost an auto include in a nekusar deck.

and if your budget allows timetwister

also, you have wheel of fate, but where is wheel of fortune?

i should post up my nekusar list; he's such a fun commander to play. draws alot of hate... if you could change swiftfoot boots with lightning greaves you'd probably be better off too. hexproof vs shroud in your build doesn't seem better. if you running the infect combo with him then i'd say go with swiftboots.

I've been waiting for the "Nekusar Fever" to die down a little before posting my own list (if that ever happens-- he is awesome), but I will let you in on the "sick tech" since you have an interest in shuffling your graveyard into your library: Diminishing Returns.

I've won more games than I can name with that card. It's cheaper than Time Spiral in mana cost (although it does not give you the mana back like Time Spiral does), cheaper than Timetwister in monetary cost, and exiling 10 cards from your deck is negligible because there's so much redundancy in this deck.

The only "odd" thing about Diminishing Returns is that it allows players to draw "up to" 7 cards-- but let's be honest, it's a pretty "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation for your opponents. Either they avoid drawing to avoid damage, and therefore have nothing to react to your 7 new cards of gas, or they draw and are punished for it.

On a related note, I think Ill-Gotten Gains is a sweet card for Nekusar, being basically a wheel-for-graveyards. I run a smattering of one-shot mana accelerant cards like Turnabout and Seething Song in my list, not quite enough to "storm" but enough to get insane value off of things like Yawgmoth's Will and Ill-Gotten Gains (for example, get back a counterspell, a wheel, and a Turnabout), in addition to letting you continue to "chain" wheels without overwhelming amounts of mana up-front.

Another interesting thing I've been trying out is Leyline of the Void. A lot of opposing decks are utterly crippled by having key cards exiled in the huge swathes that casting wheels creates-- and it even forms a "combo" with Ill-Gotten Gains.

Finally, Notion Thief is grossly unfair in this deck and any Nekusar list that doesn't run him, or cut him because he "interferes with Nekusar" is not seeing the big picture.

Thank you all for your responses I greatly appreciate it. Sadly at this point and time I do not have the budget to drop on the better wheel effects so I found myself cheaper alternatives that generally do the same exact thing. I would also like to note this isnt a complete Wheel Deck yes the theme is there but I put alot of thought into the full spellslinger aspect as a whole.

Notion Thief was in the mix when I was fix putting this deck together, The problem is he has a major flaw in my meta. Alot of people run Consecrated Sphinx which in result can deck you fast. He still might find his way in but that is the reason why I cut him

Leyline of the Void- is one of those cards in my area that is on our Meta Ban list, I think it is a amazing but to many people dislike to much GY hate

Temporal Cascade- Thank you for suggesting this, I like the fact that you can pick and choose and even entwine it, serves multiple purposes and will find its way into the deck.

That's a common fear with Notion Thief, but I'm a little confused by it. It seems to me that if someone plays Consecrated Sphinx and attempts to deck you with it, you basically win the game for free.

Consider: You go to draw for your turn. The opposing player chooses to draw twice, cards which you then draw. They then choose to draw four more cards, causing you to draw four more cards. They repeat this, until...

At any point during this cycle, you can draw any instant-speed removal for the Sphinx, and use it. You now have 30+ cards in hand and are in no danger of decking.

I made some changes to the deck, I found myself wanting more Draw Shenanigans

Made some changes with cards I got for Xmas, Got the awesome Wheel of Fortune and some other changes I feel the deck needed

I hate being the 4th post in a row from bumping this I just have been updating this deck and would like to ask for any other suggestions. So far this is by far the most Chaos based deck and causes alot of fun. Even alot of people I play with like me playing this guy, Even though he is really good at out of no where wins (everytime Nekusar has won is from everyone taking 30+ damage from a Wheel Effect)

I have learned that I only play Nekusar when I know Im gonna be able to go off and people leave me alone alot because they enjoy all the card draw.

What's your current decklist looking like?

Playing Nekusar is hard to decide on for me. I suppose you want to wait till you have a good enough manabase to cast multiple wheels a turn (hoping you draw into them).

You mentioned you wanted more draw. Howling Mine and Mind's Eye and Arcanis the Omnipotentare great options. I think Skyscribing also works well as a finisher, or just some card draw for yourself.

Forced Fruition seems like it would be a good fit for him. Every time they cast something, they draw 7. They would be dead quickly as long as you have a counter backup.

Maybe some mass bounce, such as Sunder, Evacuation, or everyone's darling, Cyclonic Rift?

I suggest the above because they play very nice with Puzzle Box. The latter two can save your skin, as well.

Horn of Greed and Anvil of Bogardan are recent additions to my version of this deck, and though I have yet to play it since adding them, I am confident they will work well.

Oh, Library of Leng is great alongside the wheels.

I know it's old but I just wanted to say thanks for this thread. I just got the Mind Sieze precon and I've been struggling with the Jeleva idea. Besides Army of the Damned and Eternal Dominion I don't really have a lot of heavy hitting wincons for her to cast consistently (plus she rarely sees more than one cast because nobody wants to kill her). So winning most of my games with "Occam" I've got more of a library of cards to build around his ability and this has helped clear some ofo that up. I was actually working on a legacy-esque deck that worked around teferi's box and getting a huge hand to use sturmgeist and psychosis crawler so I have some of these Thanks!



Although I feel like one day I will order some massive list of massive cards for Jeleva to cast
