On Thanksgiving after dinner, I was talking to my dad about how people in the Magic community love to have customized/personalized items to better represent themselves in Magic, such as with sleeves and playmats. I started talking to him about how deck boxes didn't have as much personality, when it hit me! He should try it!
At first, he was very sceptical about it, but in the end decided he would give it a try. He has done woodworking for years, including making a few doll houses for his sister, which have been published in magazines, so making small boxes didn't seem like it would be out of his range of expertise.
The box with the rounded top is the very first one he made for me, just in case he didn't want to do any more, he wanted it to be special. The square lid is the second one which he knocked out very quickly because he thought it was that much fun making them.
Does anyone on here think he should continue making these, or should he hang it up and go back to dollhouses?
The wooden boxes seem pretty neat, I would think that selling them would be the hard part. Maybe you can try and contact someone like Liefkicker who used (I dunno if they still do) to make custom boxes (for reference: http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=357002)
You can also check around in the cube forum, as some of those guys have custom boxes made for their cube.
Out of curiosity, what are the hidden compartments in the lids for? I can't tell if they are big enough for dice/counters.
The hidden compartments are indeed for dice. In the one I have, I can fit a full block of the mini dice and 4-5 d20's as well, and I still have room left over.
Those are really neat, I think there's a market for it for sure. You could sell them painted, blank, engraved, etc. Is the market huge? Not sure on that. It's definitely something you'd have to explore. Along with that, if the interest rises, so will your competition. People are going to get into it just like you and heck, there might already be people doing it now. Try to be at the front of the innovation if you pursue it. It definitely is really neat and a good place to sell them would be etsy.com.
The only issue I see considering they are very nice would be you want the inside to be little form fitting to a deck so its not sliding back and forth but leave a spot where you can finger the deck out from the front and back.
These are cool, thanks for sharing. I always like seeing the work of craftsmen with various trade skills. They certainly look solid and would be easily customizable.
Here is the latest one. It took a little longer to get it made because he slipped and hurt his shoulder during the ice storm in the area. This one is coated with a textured paint that gives it a cool stone finish.
Thanks for the compliments! My dad appreciates them. My dad has no problems doing customized work, so if there are any specific items (emblem, fasteners, hinges, etc.) that you would like put on, he is very willing to work with you.
Each box has a compartment to hold the dice or glass beads in. He uses high-grade velcro to secure the corners to quarter round that he places inside of each corner of the compartment. I have been carrying a box around for about 4 months now when he made the first one, and I have yet to have one open when I am carrying it around. He uses strong latches and hinges to secure each box.
Feel free to e-mail him on his etsy store if you have any questions/concerns.
