A cheap knock-off of Furor's thread! Knock-off's r 7|-| |-|07|\|3$$!!!1one!
DEMOCRATS/LIBERALS:
1. Republican's are not all stupid by default. Please don't assume or say so.
2. Republican's do not all think alike or believe the same things. Please don't start ranting at someone about gun control if they have a Republican view on Abortion, or something of that nature.
3. You are not better than anyone else purely because you are a Democrat. Please debate kindly, without any snobbery or as I call it "douchery." (Though this really applies to everyone)
REPUBLICANS/CONSERVATIVES:
1. Please do not wave off the Democrat's opinion because your party holds majority. Minority opinion's matter.
INDEPENDANTS/NO SOLID PARTY AFFILIATION:
1. Please state your position clearly. Nothing is more annoying (ok, maybe some things could be more annoying... But I digress) than debating with a guy for a page or two, only to realize you believe the same thing. If you end up debating someone who agrees with you, that's fine, just make sure they know you agree with them!
2. Stop being such a wuss and pick a party already godd-*cough* Nevermind.
EVERYONE:
1. In the timeless words of of Aretha Franklin, "All I'm askin'... Is for a little Respect..." Do not call people stupid and ignore their post, do not simply assume someone is wrong because they hold a different belief than yours, and never ever ever strawman (quote a section of post, and just laugh/respond sarcastically to avoid responding).
2. Grammar good. Grammar very good.
3. See Rule #2, substitute grammar for spelling.
4. Outside sources are good! www.dictionary.com, the Constitution, The Clean Water Act, whatever. Opinions are just opinions, but by bringing the facts of a debate into a debate you can deepen its effectiveness! T2 makes a fair point, however, don't just post other folks opinions. Use outside sources to support your own position, not replace your lack thereof. (CITE SOURCES!)
5. Do not just run to extremes if you have nothing else to say. No 'fascist' or 'communist' calls here please...
Basically, just be respectful of other people's opinions and be sure to clearly form and state your own!
--
If you plan on respecting the rules, :hikari: thanks you. Otherwise, :guns: *you*. Simple, eh?
T2 (or anyone else for that matter), if you've got anything to add please post it!
1. Please do not wave off the Democrat's opinion because your party holds majority. Minority opinion's matter.
I think the rules that you posted for Democrats should apply here too (except for applying to how one acts to Democrats, obviously).
INDEPENDANTS/NO SOLID PARTY AFFILIATION:
1. Please state your position clearly. Nothing is more annoying (ok, maybe some things could be more annoying... But I digress) than debating with a guy for a page or two, only to realize you believe the same thing.
I don't entirely agree with this. It can definitely be constructive to debate with someone who essentially agrees with you. I mean, if they really did believe the same thing you wouldn't debate for pages on end (unless the other person is playing devil's advocate, which should never be discouraged).
2. Grammar good. Grammar very good.
That's a rather ironic statement
4. Outside sources are good! www.dictionary.com, the Constitution, The Clean Water Act, whatever. Opionions (sic) are just opinions, but by bringing the facts of a debate into a debate you can deepen it's (sic) effectiveness!
Sheesh, follow the spelling rule.
As an aside, i think we can all agree that sources such as english.pravda.ru should not be accepted at all. As a matter of fact, if you do cite a source of that quality, you should be forbidden to debate ever again.
I think the rules that you posted for Democrats should apply here too (except for applying to how one acts to Democrats, obviously).
It does, under the 'Everyone' section. I posted that specifically because I didn't want someone saying something like "Well, tough luck, we can get it through the House and Senate anyways"

I guess it could be, but you should still state your opinion. If you aren't in on the same-side debate, it can be very unfun.

That's a joke there sonny!

Then why did you post what you did under democrats? Because democrats can be cocky and self-righteous? Of course they can, but so can republicans.
I guess it could be, but you should still state your opinion. If you aren't in on the same-side debate, it can be very unfun.
Why?
Jesus dude, typos /=/ spelling errors.
Well, you still didn't spell the words correctly, old sport.
As a side note, if you're going to use an ambiguous label such as "liberal" or "conservative" you should define it, or otherwise elaborate on what you mean.
It seems like something that shouldn't sink into the abyss

Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.
Just a suggestion- and please, Stax, don't take this as a personal remark- while outside sources are good, they are not all defining- in other words: don't debate with quotes. What James Madison said might be enlightening, but it is not an argument: back up your facts with your opinion---that is the hallmark of a good argument.
I'd like to add that people need to keep in mind at all times that positions on social issues and positions on economic issues are completely and totally independant of each other. It really irks me how talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity always talk about "liberal" and "conservative", "left" and "right" as if it's a single line and everyone falls on a point somewhere on that line. No. Hillary Clinton is not "moving right", she's becoming more conservative on social issues. This is no way effects her position on economic issues. This is so important because unless people realize this, they'll just go along with economic policies that hurt them, just because those positions are held by someone with conservative social positions, and they mistakenly believe there's only one line.
Does anyone remember the politics test that was posted on 'news before the election? A link to that would be very helpful.
A good rule to add, if it isn't already covered, is not to go to extremes. Calling those who oppose or support such and such matter as communistic/fascist. I do think it would take a fairly constant radical position to be a member of either party.
Another is the ever popular reminder to cite your sources, not robotically but just provide a link or acknowledge the idea isn't your own. Edit- jsut restate it since it is especially important to debate and politicak threads.
Assuming the right to be religious and the left to be irreligious is not constructive. Although this is a ballpark indicator of the demographics, it doesn't apply definitely to most issues, and hardly to all of them.
TheBluewizard, Rob and T2sux have made some good points.
BlueWizard
1) I agree. Try to avoid extreme labels. In other words: a person who believes in the social security system should not be called a "communist" without further evidence. On the other side, "fascist" is a word that is very abused by the left.
Rob
2) I agree. When a person is undecided on an issue, or is attempting to weigh both sides of an argument, he or she may find it helpful to critique the arguments of others. This is a technique that can be used to come to greater awareness of one's true feelings on an issue. Also, it helps the others to evaluate their arguments again.
T2
3) I agree. It is tiresome when you have to respond to a post in which you were quoted 20 times. But what's worse is when people quote outside sources again and again... and again... and again, without presenting their own opinions and/or argument.
@Stax: this thread is long overdue. Thank you very much for your efforts in putting it together.
Perhaps it might be better to separate it into Liberal/Conservative or Left/Right instead of Democrat/Republican. Just so these rules can apply to non-American discussions as well.
People... Posting in old threads is fine and dandy if you have new content to add (in this thread's case, a rule addendum). If you want to discuss communism, start a new communism thread.
Well, I think rule #1 for the Democrats should also be added to the Republicans. Far too often (not only here), I see Republicans using "liberal" as a derogatory term, and just basing their argument on the "fact" that all democrats/liberals are dumb. Not to mention, they assume all people with left-wing opinions are Democrats. I have extreme left wing views, but I hate both the Democrats and the Republicans.

Why is everyone treating communist like the devil. Communism is the only perfect goverment... That only works on paper and in Star Trek.
