The Story
Human created Cylons to do their dirty work. But the Cylons rebelled, and after a long and vicious war with the humans, they eventually fled the solar system.
That was 40 years ago. Nobody's heard anything from the Cylons since then.
Until now.
Battlestar Salvation recently received an urgent message from Command stating that the capture and interrogation of a Cylon on Caprica has revealed that the Cylons are back, that they can now imitate humans almost perfectly, and that Salvation's Private First Class Jon is an undercover Cylon agent and that there are other undercover Cylon agents on Salvation who plan to kill the crew and steal the ship.
Almost immediately after Salvation received this revelation, Command - along with most of the rest of humanity - was almost totally destroyed by a massive surprise Cylon attack.
And so, panic has engulfed the Battlestar Salvation. Not knowing who to trust, nobody's following orders. The crew, in their maddened state, have decided to vote for one person to get thrown out of an airlock each day. In the cold of space, humans suffocate and freeze. As the crew learned after they threw Private First Class Jon out of an airlock, Cylons simply float away, making mean faces and shaking their fists and the ship. :b
The Cylons win if all the humans are killed; and the humans win if they wipe out the Cylons.

Ok, so I know I shouldn't really be double-posting, especially so early, but it happens in Mafia games. I just wanted to say that I realized I know little about military ranks (I looked up the title), so ignore my stupidity. Thank you.
Okay. First, off, just a quick reminder to those who have been playing in World Domination Mafia: directly quoting PMs in THIS game is probably going to result in your death, unless Jon chooses to run it Hvir style.
Now, on to the role names.
From a flavor standpoint, I'm guessing we have a fairly even distribution of lower ranking and higher-ranking mafia. I can also easily see one of the top two or three highest ranks being a Cylon infiltrator for flavor reasons.
I would generally count on one of Commander Azrael (me), Colonel Fadeblue, and Major Puzzle being a mafia agent. More than one would be a bit harder to stomach, since by that point the Cylons would already outrank the rest of the humans, which wouldn't make much sense story-wise.
As for our specialists, Crippled Fist, and Urban Druid, if there is a correlation between their role names and abilities (as there is with my own role) I think we may be able to expect that they have the same ability. The same goes for our Private First Classes, Billking and Help I'm a Bug. It may be that one of these pairs is a mason group, or it could be that they have the same ability but are on opposite sides (since generally the mods don't create townies or mafia with identical abilities, with the exception of masons).
Course, that's all just conjecture at this stage of things.
Another name that sticks out to me is "petty officer". Taken outside of the usual military context, the prefix "petty" (without a "chief" stuck in front of it) suggests possible cowardice, weakness, or subterfuge on the part of the character, and could be a flavorful name for a mafia agent. Certainly not anything concrete though, just a 1-5% increase or so on the scum radar. No offense meant, Axel.
"Second" Lieutenant sounds a bit obscure too, so another 1% or so blip for that, with Dazbog.
Conversely, Corporal is more of a fairly trustworthy-sounding rank (to anyone who's ever watched the movie Aliens, while growing up) so AlphaInsidious could get a slight edge out of that.
Of course, actual observation of people's play is generally a much more reliable indicator of their allegiance, so I'll try to stop overanalyzing these and just wait for the day to get started in earnest.
Oh yeah. I'll see if I can remember the ranking system well enough to put everyone's rank in order from first to last, roughly:
High-Ranking 1. Colonel fadeblue 2. Major Puzzle 3. Commander Azrael
Mid-Rank 4. First Lieutenant Pibbly 5. Second Lieutenant dazbog_eaterofsouls
6. Chief Petty Officer NavyJoe 7. Petty Officer Axelrod
Enlisted 8. Corporal AlphaInsidious 9. Specialist Urban Druid 10. Specialist Crippled_Fist 11. Specialist armlx 12. Private First Class help im a bug 13. Private First Class Dusk_ 14. Private First Class billking
And oh yeah. In my last post, I failed to notice that Dusk is also a private first class. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised at all if one of our privates is a Ceylon, to balance out the others.
Ah. Guess I missed Armlx being a specialist, too. Same thing goes there.
I find it interesting that three Private First Classes are in the game, and have a hard time believing that they are all Cylon or Mafia, that would be much too easy. So perhaps the name titles aren't the best indication at all of who is what.
But speculate away! :biggrin3:

Well, that's some interesting analysis you've done, Az.
I wonder, with 14 people, what the most likely combinations of scum are.
4 mafia and an SK sounds like a wee bit too much, but then, the game started during day, so that balances things a little toward the town. Maybe two mafia groups? Cylons and some treacherous people within us? I really don't know.
My goal for this game is to develop a style of much more conservative play, which means much less in the way of wild and crazy accusations. I'm not a fan of how the last two games turned out for me, and I'd like to make sure I don't do anything to make it happen again. So, if I'm acting abnormally... uh, I don't know, calm or something... please do not be alarmed.
I think starting off with a day is a very interesting game design element. Under normal circumstances, it seems that the town would more or less by lynching randomly, since there haven't been any actions taken on the previous night on which to base their choices. This leads me to believe that some players probably already have interesting role PMs that give them discussion fodder for the first day in order to get the ball rolling. I'm wondering if my hypothesis is correct... although I imagine it's possible that no one would have motivation to volunteer such information. I guess it depends upon the nature of the information itself.
So before we get into that, a metaconversation: If such information exists, should it be shared with the group? Discuss; I don't want to rock the boat in this game — at all — so I'd like it if we have a consensus before anyone does anything controversial.
Spock is not portrayed correctly. If Vulcans are above petty emotions, what motivates him to join the most elite starship crew in the galaxy? I, on the other hand, have transcended the weakness of emotion and achieved a blissful lack of caring. Apathy is my strength, our strength, which prevents us from being all-to-human. In this spirit, may Meh be with you, always.
We could try a flavor claim.... just without the copy/paste. I just dont think that it will do us any good, from to looks of my PM. Its rather boring and doesnt really have much to say.
Anyway, Woot for being 4th ranked officer on the ship!

About quoting PMs from me: you can do so, if you wish. I won't confirm or deny anything though, so trust what players write at your own risk. Just for the record, here are the ranks (which is something you all would already know). Azrael pretty much has 'em right, except that Commander Adama's the highest-ranking officer in Battlestar Galactica, so I made the Commander the highest-ranking officer in this game.

OK we need a solution here. Unless someone does something incredibly stupid and completely exposes themselves, we're swinging in the dark here. And I don't see someone slipping up this early.

I think starting off with a day is a very interesting game design element. This leads me to believe that some players probably already have interesting role PMs that give them discussion fodder for the first day in order to get the ball rolling.
I have a very bad feeling that I have been set up here (not by billking, but by the Mod.) Yes, my role PM does have some "interesting" information in it, which I am going to go ahead and reveal right now, because, in light of billking's post, I am fairly certain that other people have also been given "information" and will suspect me.
It goes like this: Several weeks ago, I received secret orders from the Commander (it does not say Azrael, just the "Commander." It also does not say how I received the orders, just that they were secret) informing me that a majority of the weapons on the Battlestar had been sabotaged and needed to be de-activated. The Orders were then to be destroyed.
So I went to the Weapon's Depot with another individual and disarmed most of the ship's ammo. This has had the effect of leaving the ship largely defenseless in the event of a large scale Cylon attack.
Oh yes, the person who went to disarm the ammo with me--Private First Class Jon.
Since learning Jon was a Cylon I have been paranoid and frightened about what I did. This description then leads directly into my night ability which I won't reveal at this time.
So my information is that the ship's weapons have been largely disarmed, and the ship may be defenseless. I got orders to do this from the "Commander", but I was probably duped as part of a Cylon plot. And now I can do something else, which sort of compensates for this.
My first take is that the "Orders" may very well not have come from Azrael. I doubt that Jon would give me information that just said "so and so is a Cylon duplicate" right off the top. The PM is meant to generate suspicion, and I was planning on watching Azrael closely (but let's face it, who isn't.) I kind of like his idea that there probably is a Cylon in one of the highest ranks, so I believe that the Orders could have come from any one of them.
I also have a feeling someone out there can confirm at least part of what I am saying (is that right, billking?).
More later.

I think we're placing far too much emphasis on rank here. It would be pointless to start killing people off based on where we think Cylons might be, because for all we know, it was all random placement.
I think we're placing far too much emphasis on rank here. It would be pointless to start killing people off based on where we think Cylons might be, because for all we know, it was all random placement.
Possible, but unlikely. Most mods draft up the role names along with the role abilities at the same time. And in my own case, I know for a fact that my role name is directly linked to my ability.
We can make a good number of loose assumptions about rank, based on flavor.
1. That one of the high-ranking officers is mafia.
2. That one of the privates is likely mafia. (if they aren't a mason group)
3. That one of the specialists is likely mafia. (if they aren't a mason group)
4. That one of those could be a mason group.
5. That for flavor reasons, some names have more or less trust-worthy connotations than others.
From a game design point of view, these would be the types of factors and decisions that I as a Mod would tend to make or consider. Balancing out large rank blocks with a mafia agents makes sense, as would taking flavor connotations into acount when assigning names.
Trying to figure out who is mafia based only on flavor and game design isn't the most reliable method, but it can often yield a few bits of helpful information and it's worth a shot, especially since that's the only information we've got to work with at this point aside from role-based knowledge.
Also, in regards to Axelrod's orders, I can attest that I was NOT the one who gave that order, nor did I have any knowledge it had ocurred. Whoever it actually did come from is undoubtedly a Cylon. So, if no further leads come up, we may want to try and gamble on one of the high-ranking officers rather than lynch completely randomly, but let's see what other information we can uncover before the end of the day. As stated before, behavior is usually a more reliable indicator than flavor, so I'd prefer to try and lynch based at least partially on that, unless we run into a dead end and it becomes our last resort.
Hm... The ranking system might give us an indication of how the mafia are distributed, but if that's the case, then I know either Azrael or Puzzle is scum (seeing as I know I'm not). It doesn't make sense to me if Azrael is scum, since he would stand to gain greater suspicion from posting his theory (although it could be one of these famous "Azrael gambits" that people seem to mention a lot). I'm more inclined to think that Puzzle is scum, though, if the theory is correct.
Can anyone think of why the ship being defenseless is relevant? There aren't any extraneous actions in this game, so unless someone has an ability dealing with nonexistent defenses, I don't see why this is important. The only conclusion I can come up with is that all that information is simply meant to implicate one of the higher-ups. This could either be extra information for a town role (basically saying, "one of these three people is mafia," although that might be a bit powerful), or it could be information meant to mislead the town. I can see a mod giving a townie false information like that because it would almost certainly lead to that townie getting lynched in many scenarios. We know that the Cylons are imitating humans, so it's possible that the order came from anyone.
How much do we know about Cylons from a flavor perspective? I admit I've actually never watched Battlestar Galactica (don't hate me Jon).
dazbog: Good point. It seems rather risky for Axelrod to come up with something like this on the first day, though, especially without knowing what most of the other role PMs are like. But I agree that it's not outside the realm of possibility.
Believe me, if I was going to make something up, it wouldn't have been that. I also don't know for certain, but suspect, given the way my info. read, that someone else has information related to this. I won't say in what way yet.
Also, while I will still agree that the set-up probably has a Cylon at the top (not just because of the Orders, but also just because flavor purposes would seem to dictate it), I'm not at all sure that the remaining Cylons will be "evenly" distributed throughout the remaining ranks. Seems a bit too neat to have one private (out of three), one specialist (out of three), one "high-ranking" officer (out of three), plus maybe even another?

My head hurts reading all that...lol. I will get the hang of it. To me, these Cyclon could easily disguise as a higher ranking officer. Can we get more info about each "role". I'm willing to discuss mine if anyone is interested.
Well, revealing information is a risky bet because there are bound to be townies whose role is such that if thier information was revealed then they would become obvious mafia targets and when they refuse to put out such information to save their own skins they would raise suspicion. just something to think about befor we go rushing into anything.

Um, you're saying you want to lend to the cause by providing Cylon DNA? Is this a way of admitting your humanness? Are you sure that's the best thing to be doing? You'd better not reveal a lot more...i wouldn't think.

We vote a Person off, not a group. And Cylon votes will be counted like any other. The Person with the majority of votes will be killed when the day ends.
In other words, no, you won't be shown who is on which side ;).
OK I get. It's the humans job to vote off the Cylon and the Cylon want to vote off the humans. So if you are telling everyone your human, you will get votes from the Cylon......got it....
NavyJoe: In a game of Mafia, it's the town's job to figure out who the mafia are and get rid of them. The town outnumber the mafia, but the mafia know each other. (In this game, replace "town" with "Humans" and "mafia" with "Cylons.")
Puzzle: Actually I didn't. I'm trying to the idea of the game so I don't stick my foot in my mouth and get thrown out of an airlock.

E6: Petty Officer 1st Class

I did a little research. Once daytime started, a few members have logged in, but said nothing...that makes me think:
a. They have nothing to say
b. They are afraid to say something, as to reveal to much info...
So as I see it we have a few options as to how we should proceed.
1. Wild Accusations. Never a good idea though if we have no ther options...
2. Go on rank. Basically as bad as #1 since we'd still be blindly accusing but a bit more logical.
3. Collect information. As I said before this can get a few townies killed...
I have no more ideas but we need to figure out how to go on from here or just sit around and wait for someone to slip up.

Anyway, Woot for being 4th ranked officer on the ship!
Just for the record, here are the ranks (which is something you all would already know). Azrael pretty much has 'em right, except that Commander Adama's the highest-ranking officer in Battlestar Galactica, so I made the Commander the highest-ranking officer in this game.
Commander Azrael
Colonel fadeblue
Major Puzzle
First Lieutenant Pibbly
Second Lieutenant dazbog_eaterofsouls
Chief Petty Officer NavyJoe
Petty Officer Axelrod
Corporal AlphaInsidious
Specialist Urban Druid
Specialist Crippled_Fist
Specialist armlx
Private First Class help im a bug
Private First Class Dusk_
Private First Class billking
In this game, a Boomer Cylon's with a Private First Class Jon Cylon, vacationing on a nice little (now-deserted) tropical island resort on Caprica. :b
More later.

You may begin pointing fingers whenever you want to, however it isn't wise top go blindly accusing people this early as that somes off as suspicious.

I was rereading the posts, and Az made a statement about "Petty Officer" sticks out to him. PO (Petty Officer) is Navy's way of saying Sergeant. Anything E4 above is a Petty Officer.
E4: Petty Officer 3rd Class
E5: Petty Officer 2nd Class
E6: Petty Officer 1st Class
E7: Chief Petty Officer
E8: Senior Chief Petty Officer
E9: Master Chief Petty Officer

I did a little research. Once daytime started, a few members have logged in, but said nothing...that makes me think:
a. They have nothing to say
b. They are afraid to say something, as to reveal to much info...
