At the request of andelijah, this game is now basil flavored.
Hello! Welcome to Herbs and Spices mafia. You are all herbs and spices. Check the sign up thread for specific flavor. Flavor should not count for much in this game, so you can skip it if you like.
Dead: 7. Yuanti, MoutainSkullcap, townie, lynched day one. 5. Bilium Tate (replacing AlphaInsidious Day one (replacing roker05 Day one), Cumin, Townie, killed night one 10. Apokalypse_Kid, Cinnamon, mafia goon, was lynched day two. 3. Zionite, Curry, Townie, was killed night two. 9. Kraj, Hemlock, Serial Killer, was lynched day three. 6. Jack Bauer, Fennel, Townie, was killed night three 11. GiftTrix (replacing Silent Prophet replacing GiftTrix day one), Chile Powder, Townie, was killed night four. 8. andelijah, Neem, Townie, was lynched day five. 4. RDSGD4 (replacing DragonDart Day one), Marshmallow, Doctor, endgamed. 1. Faeren, Allspice, Cop, endgamed.
This game contains simple roles. Here are all the possible roles this game could contain:
For the town:
Doctor
Cop
Role blocker- targets someone at night, the targeted player can't make an action that night. You all play magic so you can understand this wording.
Vigilante- Can choose someone to die each night
Watcher- Can see who targeted a person of his choice at night. It is unlikely this role will be in the setup.
Tracker- Can see who the player of his choice targeted at night. It is unlikely this role will be in the setup.
For the mafia:
Mafia Godfather- Is town upon investigations and can't be vigged.
Mafia Roleblocker- A promafia role blocker.
Other "maybe" roles:
Serial killer- Is not aligned with either the mafia or the town, but is trying to be the last to live. He also has a kill each night and can't be the target of investigations/kills.
Townie Role Pm:
<flavor>
You have no special abilities. You win when all of the bad spices/herbs are dead.
Using the language of my pms as basis for an argument may end with several modkills.

Well, I didn't figure out a single scum, which bothers me. Being at the top of everyone's townie lists makes it worse too, because, if left alive, I could have led the town to their doom very quickly by pursuing false leads (although, in hindsight, I couldn't have done worse).
The only thing I am happy about that game was correctly thinking Faeren was town at the end of d1, and especially d2, even if it was too late by then.
Well, there's 4, not 3, and the last is *obviously* the most scummy of the bunch.
But no, not at all. For the past 3 (maybe 4-5) newb games, there have been multiple random votes on the same person. Obviously lynching me at this point would be incredibly scummy, but I don't think I'm in danger of being lynched.
I was ignoring you because when you're Mafia, I've probably lost already anyway.
Why do you still play noob?
More games = More experience. Even if I'm better at appearing town than most people here (although this game looks like it will have quite a few good players, especially DD), I still need to refine my [in]ability to find scum. Besides, I think newb games are in fairly constant need of players (especially now that we're running them right after each other, I think they used to be more spread out), so playing while eligible is a good idea.
Out of interest does no one think 3 votes are beyond the word random?
Lets keep the random stage civil.

No. I think voting with the intent to lynch (and, as I mentioned in my post, I used random.org to determine who to vote for, which is most defenantly not with the intent to lynch) is beyond random.

The whole idea is to leave the random stage at some point, and what better way to do it than to hold people accountable for what I deem potentially suspicious actions within this first phase?
YuanTi's reaction seems sincere to me- do you have a past with andelijah that stretches beyond just one game?
AK's reaction, however, does not. Yes, it seems a bit strange that you would elaborate on such a mundane action as removing a random vote. As if you wanted to draw attention to the point specifically that you were getting off the andelijah bandwagon. I gather from YuanTi's responses that he's considered a good player, making this move doubly interesting.
Jack...you're reading WAY too much into that. It wasn't some sinister plot to draw attention to the fact that I unvoted, I just felt like elaborating a little. Is that bad?

As I have never played mafia before I can only guess what I think I would do on day 1 if I were mafia, after thinking about it I would do my best to stir up paranoia and not only point my finger at a random person, but at several simply to increase the variables and 'evidence' around me. So I would point my finger at several people for any reason I thought was logical. That was Jack has done. He's FOS'd one person than FOS'd two more without actually spelling it out.

I random voted AK, took that off, voted YuanTi and FOSed AK, whom I later moved my vote back to.

You guys are reading too much into what is a sign of inexperience, not scumminess. The problem with JB's play so far is that he doesn't understand scum tells, and so he is voting on the mildest of "evidence." This play is slightly similar to Niv's a couple games ago: hopping votes around on near nothing.
What we need here is less chaos. Everyone is accusing everyone else with little reason. It's the beginning of the game, lets settle and think instead of being all spread out. Can we please decide to come away from this?
There is no one to focus on yet, and so settling on someone is quite premature. Going in random directions has the bonus of garnering reactions without the real threat of lynching anyone yet.
I agree that there's little reason, but there isn't anything to analyze either, so at this point, we have to go off of little information.
I'm not saying to settle on someone, I just said settle as in not being everywhere all the time. But yeah, I suppose even if we were to do that where would we go from there? Even so, in an earlier post you criticized 'hopping votes' with little to go on, yet now you say it's a good thing? I assume you mean only in the beginning.
I somewhat agree. "Random" is never advantageous and going in all directions at once may be useful for gathering reactions but little else. Focus is more of a necessity.
As for YuanTi's question, my accusation of your dodginess was attributed solely on your comment of "watches". It was not meant to be accusatory.

There is a difference between "hopping votes," which is 1 player voting and unvoting constantly (and/or casting suspicion on a large number of people), and the town not having a generally agreed upon target, which is a variety of players having only one or two votes on them. I am saying the latter is not a problem, and I thought by "settle" you meant to consolidate our votes onto only one person, something that is unnecessary right now, not to be less hectic.
What is there to focus on though? We just finished the random vote stage, and we need a little more content/discussion before being able to analyze or focus on anything.
Although, this mafia theory or further discussion of Jack's play would get that content along nicely.
Although, this mafia theory or further discussion of Jack's play would get that content along nicely.
My thoughts on his play? He seems to be trying hard to look town, not sure if he's mafia or over-the-top noob. Every post seems to be, "look, look, I found something I don't like. It's scummy right?" And seems to make mountains out of molehills so to speak. I don't think AKs extra bit with his unvote was scummy. Jack jumped all over it, and read it as a serious deal. His basis on yuan wasn't too solid either. However, seeing as it's early game with nothing to go on, all we have to pick up on is minor things. My read on him is neutral-leaning scum, but with the chance of overactive townie.
I wish I had more reliable internet right now, so I wouldn't be dropping in so infrequently.
On Jack: My initial reaction is that he's trying too hard to point fingers, and working himself up over the people on the first "bandwagon."
It's also interesting how quickly Myrf and Trix jumped on Jack (apologies if I missed anyone else voting for him non-randomly) though. Especially Trix's post which seems a bit too eager to explain that he is town and trying to anticipate how he would be trying to act if he were scum.
You guys are reading too much into what is a sign of inexperience, not scumminess.
The problem with this point of view is it's often impossible to tell the difference, especially in a newbie game.
I certainly won't fault someone for stirring the pot, especially at this early stage of the game where someone has to do something to focus on, but at the moment I'm happy with where my vote is.

The Golden Rule of forums: If you're going to be rude, be right. If you might be wrong, be polite.
Jack_Bauer seems just highly overzealous. i disagree with Kraj that the difference between inexperience and scumminess is impossible to see. Seeing as how a curiously large amount of people were quick to jump against Jack_Bauer, that even further gives me suspicion that he is just acting overzealous.
On the other hand, the posts that occureed afterwards are of interest:
Initially, Absolutionis called Jack_Bauer on his recklessness.
Myrf initiated the first vote.
YuanTi simply agreed.
ApokalypseKid agreed.
GiftsTrix agreed, voted, and gave an explanation.
Of the set, Myrf and GiftsTrix actually voted. However, Myrf was only the second person whereas GiftsTrix was the fifth.
In any case, moreso than reckless zeal, bandwagonning tends to be more of a scum tactic.
So you're saying someone in that line-up is scum? I follow your reasoning that bandwagoning is a scum tell, so it would make since. If so, who do you think was the scummiest out of that line Abso?
The problem with this point of view is it's often impossible to tell the difference, especially in a newbie game.
Even if it was impossible to tell the difference, I think that, especially in a newb game, you give a person benefit of the doubt for a first (or sometimes more) transgression. Lynching someone who gives off newb/scum tells in a newb game will give you no better odds at actually finding scum than lynching randomly. I also think that newb scum tend to play more conservatively, in an effort to have no attention drawn to themselves.
However, I think it is possible to tell the difference between a newb tell and a scum tell, and overzealousness is a newb tell.

What is there to focus on though? We just finished the random vote stage, and we need a little more content/discussion before being able to analyze or focus on anything.
Although, this mafia theory or further discussion of Jack's play would get that content along nicely.

Unvote, FoS GiftsTrix
The problem with this point of view is it's often impossible to tell the difference, especially in a newbie game.
I certainly won't fault someone for stirring the pot, especially at this early stage of the game where someone has to do something to focus on, but at the moment I'm happy with where my vote is.
