Just like with 10th, one of the backs for tokens/T&T cards in Lorwyn is a preview of the next set. The upper left says "Morningtide™". Under this is "The second set in the Lorwyn™ block." In the lower left is "Available 1, 2008", "Worldwide Prerelease January 19-20, 2008", and "www.wizards.com/prerelease". In the lower right is "Illus. Wayne Reynolds"
The main character in the art is a treefolk. He looks angry and about to hit something with both hands. The left hand appears to be channeling lightning. There's another creature in the lower right, standing on the treefolk. It looks like an owl, but with faerie wings and a cat tail which is twice as long as the owl is tall.
I'm off to another prerelease, but if no one posts a pic by tonight I'll try to dig out my camera.
A new type of creature or just a faerie or a shapeshifter?

hey i have managed to evolve my axolotls by feeding them thyroid glands the thyroxine contained in these gland is enough to change these water dwelling creatures into land based creatures

Tay, that's not evolution. It's metamorphosis. Evolution means descent with heritable modification – individuals cannot evolve, unless they're Pokemon.

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.
Damn, I don't have the scanner, but I have the pic itself =\
Yes, I think it's a Treefolk, but the creature in the lower right corner could easily be an Elemental (Cloudgoat Ranger-like creature?). The treefolk have leafy beard and a lot of runed leathery stripes on branches and on right arm. There's also some runed pieces of wood (?) on his 'chest'.

Intriguing,
The treefolk we know would not really be the type to conjure lightning bolts and the like. Perhaps in Morning Tide we'll see some members of races outside of their normal colors?

That's an interesting observation, and you're right: lightning is associated with red and blue, whereas Treefolk are green, black, and white.
I suspect the "owl" is a shapeshifter/changeling. That would explain its chimera-like nature, being composed of body parts of multiple animals. The other possibility is that the "owl" is some sort of Faerie, and that it is the familiar (as in Familiar's Ruse) of the wizard-treefolk.

- Jon Finkel believes in maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. He gets all his fiber from eating Magic cards for breakfast, and all his protein from eating Magic players for lunch.
That actually really does remind me of rancor, mr roses is right.
But I could also see it being some strange off color treefolk shaman.

SLIVER LEGION?!?!?
An open challenge to all salvation posters: Come play me at fnm at Toys From the Attic in Somersworth New Hampshire, the name is Chris Laskey and if you dare face the kithkin/red deck wins onslaught.
Im leaning toward Rancor or Rancor variant. The Lorwyn card like this turned out to be Goldmeadow Stalwart ( 2/2 for W), so I imagine this card will be something of the same caliber. Which a Rancor variant will definitely fit into.
Maybe theres a cycle of creature enchantments with the "reveal a [creature-type] or pay 3" mechanic?

I support WotC's goal of shaping Modern in favor of diversity.
I ran a thought experiment on my blog Modern in a Nuclear Wasteland
of an extreme case of banning 20 more cards to make sure they get everything, then scaling back where appropriate. WotC seems to be on a slowly build up approach. Both ways probably reach similar end points.
The post Gatecrash metagame is proving to be closer to the endpoint than I estimated, so its very possible that few (if any) more cards need to be banned.
Its going to be a single card, not two. With the exception of some Torment shared art Wizards never split one illustration for two different cards. So it's either a treefolk or a sorcery/instant spell, not a treefolk and elemental (or anything that cat-owl is...).
You forgot the new Lorwyn basics. I think there's a Swamp/Mountain and a couple of other ones.
Either way, the art doesn't seem predisposed to being split, unless each card is one of its arms or something.

Looking at the picture, i'm not sure the treefolk is creating the lightning. It looks like he's catching it. Some of the energy is running down his arm and some has continued moving past him. If the lightning were moving from his hand forward, I think it would be more focused and aimed, not just shooting off at an odd downward angle.

So Gwb still seems likely for the trees.
Of course, I might be severely confused.

Oh! Maybe something that catches the spell and absorbs it. That would be neat and flavorful.

Why did I ever think a signature in comic sans was a good idea?

I'm gonna have to concur on this. The bolt seems much more likely to be coming from off the frame on the right, with part striking the Treefolk's hand and part continuing on past him. In fact, his posture as a whole seems defensive, as though he has leaned out of the way of the brunt of the assault and braced himself for the remainder of it. I'm gonna say that it is very probable that he has/grants either Shroud or Absorb.
The last non-basic land art that was split into to cards was Brothers Yamizakia.
The cards you quote are older then the Torment cards that were mentioned earlier.
Actualy Frost Raptor and Vexing Sphinx are the most recent. They also did a split mural for Gallantry andRepentant Vampire. Basicaly, there is no way to tell if they are going to do a mural or just use the art for one card. This art looks like it is only for one card, though, judging by its dimensions.

I was about to say that:rolleyes:.
Anyway, I think it is one card, I agree the lightning bolt is being used against the treefolk. My guess at the card:
Refractor 1RRW
Creature-Elemental

and that the treefolk could possibly be colfenor?
The small creature is clearly a diminutive elemental.
The treefolk is NOT Colfenor, people. Colfenor is a red yew, a conifer. This thing is not a conifer.

All of the Lorwyn Basics are two parters. They only split cards with the same name or basic land cards.

In my perspective, this just tells us that Morningtide is going to have Treefolk, which we could have assumed already.
Really, it looks like art that could just as easily have fit in Lorwyn.

I dunno man, the lightning on Rancor is brilliant, pure white. The trees and such behind it are green, but the lightning certainly isn't.
In fact, you could make a case that the lighting is of a similar style, if you wanted to...
But now, we're just being silly.
