An ad for Morningtide in the latest ICv2, page 7, released today. ICv2 is a magazine for retailers in the US game industry.
(Don't have a scanner.)
WANTED:
Soldiers, Shamans, Wizards, Warriors, and Rogues.
Conflict continues in the fantasy world of Lorwyn as mighty races find common ground-and power-by forming new tribes based on their Classes. As the second set in the new block, Morningtide offers gamers of all skill levels the chance to play with the highly popular tribal theme, along with all-new mechanics - Prowl, Reinforce, and Kinship.
(picture of booster box display, theme deck box and 2 theme decks, and that big box thing)
(2 theme decks we can see are "Going Rogue" which is U/B with a faerie on it and "Battalion" which is W with a Kithkin soldier on it. There is a RG deck we can see the dots for, but nothing else. Shamans, I presume.)
This will make for an awesome dynamic between race and class synergy as far as drafting. I guess race will still be more represented with two packs, but I can see this being really cool. Faerie soldiers vs. Giant Wizards!!
Kinship- the new banding? Or maybe like equipment creatures:
Trenchmate
kithkin soldier
1W
Kinship 2, Tap: Target creature you control becomes friends with Trenchmate. As long as trenchmate is tapped, target creature gets +1/+2 and is a soldier. If target creature goes to the graveyard, put a +1/+1 counter on trenchmate. You may choose not to untap trenchmate during your untap step.
Yeah, never heard of ICv2 before. However, MaRo was just hinting at this a couple of days ago, very heavily. And every other freaking thread in Speculation for the past 3 months has been "O hai, i can has novel idea. Wut if Morningtide can has classes as a theeme?"
And really. A tribal block with ZERO class-based interaction in the first set, they're going to include it in the second set. Especially since every token had a class, and 80-90% of the creatures in Lor had one of these 5 creature types.

I feel so vindicated! Can't wait to see the new lords and champions - I'm far more interested in tribal decks based on class than tribal decks based on race.

Oh damn. I guess I'll just have to shut up and swallow it. Damn, I fought SO hard against class-tribal... Wait, I've still got my Merfolk deck with Voidmage Prodigy in it! Now THAT might work out.
is this the ICv2 you're referring to? i'm impartial, as i don't care about standard constructed, but i think its a good move, because it makes advanced players think on two fields at once

-This signature intentionally left blank to increase general intrigue and mystery-
We don't need BG (elves), RW (giants), WU (Merfolk), UB (Faeries), or BR (Goblins).
So that leaves
WB = Rogues?
UR = Wizards?
RG = Shamans? Warriors?
GW = Soldiers?
GU = Wizards? Shamans?
It doesn't look like a perfect Ravnica setup. Most of the nonwhite Soldiers are blue, which already has the merfolk land. There is one green Soldier. Wizards are common among black and white next to blue.
Red has the fewest tribal ties in Lorwyn, so we can assume it gets the lions share here, especially considering it gets Warriors and Shamans easily, and Rogues populate red closely following black.
I'm not expecting Ravnica-style color distribution here, although it'd make the completist in me much happier.
Ok this makes Morningtide SLIGHTLY more interesting, at least in my eyes. I really hope they try hard to provide some tribal synergy outside aggro, since I'm getting tired of the 8 different flavors of aggro LOR contributed to standard.
Frankly, blue and white have such amazing tools for control at the moment it'd be a shame if it doesn't solidify into a new deck archetype anytime soon. Then again, as long as we live in the format where lands topdecked 2-drops can kill you out of thin air, well, I'm not getting my hopes up for true control decks; I mean, we all know Sonic Boom is more of a metagame thing than anything else at the moment...

People hiss and grunt at Mark Rosewater for the state of the game. Few realize, though, that it is Aaron Forsythe who is directly responsible of the current state of affairs due to negligence as head of Magic R&D and a completely skewed view of the game as a whole.
So next time you want to make an avvy with Rosewater pissing on something, take a deep breath and consider pasting Forsythe's face there instead...
I'm not really fond of highlighting classes; it makes the lines between race and classes vague. I think it's stupid to have a Soldier deck of 7 different races. But maybe will get something good.
I do also hope they don't forget about the real races. I think Elves, well a bit, Merfolk a lot, and Kithkin more then alot are way behind the power of Goblins. I wished they pushed it more straight by making broken good tribal cards for those tribes.
I'd also still like to see tribal land - Merfolk or elves for that mather and not Tribal Land - Soldier or any other crap. It just wouldn't satisfy me I think. Though Merfolk Wizard is the perfect solution ofcourse.

hey i have managed to evolve my axolotls by feeding them thyroid glands the thyroxine contained in these gland is enough to change these water dwelling creatures into land based creatures

Tay, that's not evolution. It's metamorphosis. Evolution means descent with heritable modification – individuals cannot evolve, unless they're Pokemon.

Good job to all of our Rumor Mill speculators who did the work of putting together class lists and other info that pointed towards this eventuality.
If I had to guess, I'd say that I expect each class to be heavily centered in one color (that seems to make sense from the list we've got) and to be built in such a way that they support the tribal theme of those race tribes they overlap most with. Lorwyn's soldiers are primarily kithkin, with a minor splash into merfolk -- so I could easily imagine aggro-oriented soldiers that support both Kithkin's "attack" and Merfolk's "tap" themes.
The only way this can work is for the cards in Morningtide to continue supporting the racial theme while simultaneously creating new class decks -- which makes sense, given the fact that every creature in Lorwyn has a tribal race and like 90% of them have a tribal class. This can work a lot better in the mini-block format, I think, since basically every card in Morningtide can be used EITHER to support the tribal theme directly, or to expand on Lorwyn's keywords....
We don't need BG (elves), RW (giants), WU (Merfolk), UB (Faeries), or BR (Goblins).
So that leaves
WB = Rogues?
UR = Wizards?
RG = Shamans? Warriors?
GW = Soldiers?
GU = Wizards? Shamans?
Of the cards in Lorwyn...
Soldiers are mainly WU.
Warriors are mainly RG, with minor in W and B.
Shamans are mainly BR, with minor in G.
Wizards are mainly U, with minor in W and B.
Rogues are mainly B, with minor in R and U.
Hmm... that doesn't match up nicely at all. I don't think we're getting a complete cycle of ten lands spanning all color combinations.
I too feel that a Humble Pie / Crow Cupcake bake sale may be in order for some of our esteemed colleagues.
Don't fight speculation QUITE so hard next time guys. It's just a freakin' game.
I JUST got finished sayin' in the Speculation thread that this was pretty darn likely. I'm surprised they managed to squeeze it in to a single set, but then again, as I (now rightly) pointed out, the Tribes were pretty self-suffiicient, identity- and mechanic-wise in Lorwyn. I didn't see a real need to flesh them out in tribal-only sense like Onslaught did. Rather, they will be fleshed out class-wise instead. This is a nice way to do it.
This ALSO makes room for Shadowmoor to be a dedicated graveyard block.
.
Shadowmoor will not contain any Tribal theme whatsoever. People need to stop even considering this idea completely. The verification of Morningtide as "class matters" makes this already 100% certain fact even clearer.
It's more obvious than freaking Guildpact when we knew so much based on Ravnica!
And you were arguing against it? Oft-times the most obvious answer is the right answer. There's a bunch of cards with purple mana symbols and seperate collector's numbers? Probably a special subset of cards in the next set. Not some scheme to throw us off. There's a definite obvious grouping of classes in the TRIBAL big set? ... right.
I know this is the part where I'm supposed to eat my hat, but I can't bring myself to do it. Why? Because this is the worst decision by WotC in years. We only defended the idea of a "no class theme" because it made no logical sense to do so. Honestly - look at the info we have now: there is NO reason to assume that they'd do this. So, whatever WotC. You're about to print a set that has NOTHING to do with the previous one. Congrats.

You're about to print a set that has NOTHING to do with the previous one.
A set filled with lorwyn tribes that care about class instead of race has plenty to do with Lorwyn itself. Especially after you add in some of Lorwyn's keywords.
In fact, it would be hard to print a set that has NOTHING to do with the Lorwyn if you stuck to the printing of only 8 creature types, because by default those are all new pieces to play with.

A bit melodramatic perhaps?
Morningtide will have nothing to do at all with Lorwyn, except for having a bunch of creatures that have the creature types that are probably the focus of the set, and most probably a bunch of cards that allow the use of race tribes along side class tribes, and the fact that changelings work as both races and classes, and... I think we get the point.
Wizards is not some team of drooling monkeys, they have an entire team of people whose job it is to design fun, synergistic sets. It is foolish to assume that they simply jumped on a decision thta made no logical sense and didn't tie into the much lauded "Interblock Design Theory"
